FTA: "What would happen if you saw a 3D illusion of a young girl chasing a ball across the street near a school?"

Get pissed off because I was cheated out of 70 points.

Just wait until the first accident where someone is killed when they slam on the brakes and get rear-ended. Who pays out that liability claim?

This might be the worst idea in the history of traffic safety.

"Ah that's probably just one of them fancy DEEEKALS - floor it Stanley!"

eddyatwork: Just wait until the first accident where someone is killed when they slam on the brakes and get rear-ended. Who pays out that liability claim?

The person in back, who was following too closely and not paying enough attention.

You know, for once here, I'm going to agree with eddy and say he has a point. The actions I take behind the wheel are going to be a tad different if I suddenly spot a small child infront of me, instead of say, a speed bump or a paper bag or something. Basically I'm going to do whatever I can to NOT hit it, even if it means wrecking my car or someone else.

Now of course, I'm at fault because I should have been paying attention and not speeding and seen it and slowed down, but people do occasionly get distracted. The point is, you don't expect to see something like this in the middle of the road, and it is going to cause someone to panic.

Old news! WOOHOO! I'm sick to my stomach today so I'm seeing stuff I ate two days ago, too.

They mean well, but that was funny. I don't need that to think of Da Chyldrun.

One week later: Girl chasing ball killed by speeding driver, mistaken for decal.

Pete and RePete were walking in the middle of the road. The driver thought they were 3D illusions and killed Pete in a hit & run.

Who was left?

The mystical road wizards of Hartford, CT decided to ease congestion by painting road signs directly onto the highway. Literally the same graphic as the regular road signs, colors and all. 84 West this lane, 91 South this lane, that sort of thing. Of course, half the traffic slows down to look at them, not knowing what they are, and the other half has seen them so often they ignore them completely but still get caught up behind the previous half. So it's even MORE of a clusterfark than what they started with. Being that it's Hartford, it's not much of a surprise.

Everywhere I have seen this article come up, the comments always make the same valid points.

1) Drivers will eventually mistake actual children in the streets for speed bumps, and will merely slow down while running over them.

2) Drivers as of now do not slow down when they see children in the street. They stop completely (and quickly) or swerve out of the way, creating a hazard to other drivers.

So if this thinking is common, how the hell did this not occur to the person/people who came up with this?

Because the communities and people who come up with ideas such as these generally only have one functioning brain cell ...

Meh.

A flat girl won't get nearly as many people to slow down as a busty (or topless) one will.

Amiright?

This is actually pretty common in other areas of the country. When they first did it in Hartford, my first thought was 'this is just like Charlotte'.

I see this ending poorly. Case history:
Fairfax County VA will park a police cruiser in a median for a week or two until commuters get used to seeing it and speed by without a second look. Then they put a speed trap in the same spot and collect fines hand over fist.

This will just anestitize people to the appearance of children in the road, eventually ending in the exact opposite effect of that intended.

Short term effect will be someone swerving into oncoming traffic to avoid hitting the illusion.

Long term effect will be little kids getting run over because people thought they were illusions.

All in all a pretty farking stupid move, exactly the kid of thing I would expect from the elected officials of some Podunk municipality.

I can see it now, a 50 car SUV pileup of soccer moms taking their little snowflakes to school in the morning. My God, won't someone please think of the poor soccer moms.

Or freeze them with your freeze ray. Yeah, that would work too! Than they'd shatter into little pieces when the car hit them. Yeah, that's the way to go!
