nesler: Roook: wow how many homes were destroyed in this? The images are terrifying. Looks like a whole neighborhood was turned to ashes in a few hours.

This has all happened in the last two hours.

Are we talking about Colorado? Or CA?

Even reverse cowgirls get the blues: Someone who was at the scene has just uploaded video taken within minutes of the initial explosion. I'd be running myself.

Link (new window)

Too soon man.

/Yeah, I know, welcome to Fark

Give blood. Seriously. Whenever something bad happens it's like a dimple on a flat surface that draws things to it. Blood supplies might be tight. You can also give a donation to the Red Cross.

How long until someone takes credit/assigns blame regardless of the real cause?

John Paul Jones: We all know who's responsible.

I literally just finished re-reading Call of Cthulu less than a minute before seeing this link. Get out of my mind.

Teknowaffle: Man, I have a feeling there are going to be some casualties from this. This isn't a normal wild fire, this was BOOM!

Perhaps it was a headshot

CA. The gas explosion was huge, and spread the flames very quickly. This definitely killed at least a couple dozen people. Too quick.

Scanner says the air drops are probably done for the night due to darkness.

Coelacanth: Want do you guys want to bet that most of those houses had wood shake roofs?

If your house explodes, I don't think it matter what kind of shingles you have.

A couple of the local TV stations are reporting it as a high pressure gas line explosion, the local fire chief has said that PG&E is there trying to shut down the line.

Allow me to be the first to say that PG&E sucks...

2010-09-09 11:04:13 PM
I bet this was PG&E's fault. They charge outrageous rates and then blow shiat up.

When they were showing the video while it was still light out, it looked like a lot of houses were down to the foundation.

Last mention of the weather said winds were at 20mph plus.

Vman: 24in gas main

That's a pretty damn big pipe. I'm going to assume that's pretty big as far as gas mains go.

Fire scanner reports that the gas line has been shut off, now it's all structures and vegetation.

It was the lead story on CBS News in Chicago, but there is a lot going on tonight and they didn't spend much time on it. Just unbelievable pictures.

I've heard reliable reports of a 24" NatGas main being the source (or fuel) for this.

Crap.

This is 8 miles from our old house in San Mateo, on Rand St...

On channel 5 they said the initial blast is in an easement - we're wondering if it's a gas line going to the airport. Would explain why it's such a big pipe.

I think some of those homes were constructed with thermite. Look how quickly they've burned.

24-inch natural gas main exploded.

Having worked on large-scale methane systems in the past (landfill-based power systems), that's basically like having hell break loose. No massive single-explosion probably (would expect a 100-foot tall initial fireball), but my guess is within five minutes you had several dozen homes on fire.

Everyone knows that natural gas doesn't melt sheetrock.

HeWhoHasNoName: I've heard reliable reports of a 24" NatGas main being the source (or fuel) for this.

Yikes... speaking as someone who designs gas pipe inspection equipment for a living, those lines are some serious shiat, they typically operate up to 750psi.

2010-09-09 11:12:02 PM
So sad, and sort of terrifying. Do you think any of them thought, "I wonder if my neighbourhood will disappear in a flash today"?

It's driving me crazy not to know the magnitude of it all.

2010-09-09 11:12:09 PM
I first saw it on the news at about 645 [so ~30 minutes post blast] and some of the houses looked pretty much gone at that point.

2010-09-09 11:12:17 PM
San Bruno is the home of Lucky Ali's Koran Superstore, isn't it?

/sorry, good luck, San Bruners and Brunettes
