According to Russian history books their invasion on Manchuria is what forced Japan to surrender in WW2, not the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The good thing about this is now the smaller states are paying attention and ganging up on the textbook producers. So Texas can have its stupid children without dragging down the rest of the country.

Sounds about as bad as the bullshiat history I was fed in school in the 70s and 80s. It's quite a shock to discover that much of what you've been taught is somewhere between a serious skewing of the facts and an outright lie.

Iranian males are obliged by law to perform 18 months of military service at age 19.

Iran and much of the rest of the world. (Wikipedia list)

Other than that it's mostly a list of politically incorrect passages (a few history errors excepted). Can we get California on the list beside Texas for its own legislatively-mandated indoctrination?

"As cited in Ibn Abbas: The apes are Jews, the people of the Sabbath; while the swine are the Christians, the infidels of the communion of Jesus" -- from an eighth-grade textbook on monotheism and jurisprudence.

This same textbook was used in a school in Virginia.

How do you expect your country to be competitive in the world when you're teaching your kids nothing but crap? Seriously people.

So the article lists what the author considers the worlds worst textbooks, then lists Texas and says that the curriculum outlined in the article isn't in any textbooks.

Great article, really great article.

I went to school in the 90's and was never taught about the War of 1812. Vietnam and the 60's were glossed over, American Imperialism almost wasn't taught at all and WWII was all about how we saved the poor French and British from the Evil Germans.

also:
And, in a salute to Democrats, "Bill Clinton's impeachment" will join Watergate in lessons on "political scandals."
Why is this a problem? I agree it's not as important as the Watergate scandal but he was the only President to be impeached(kinda a big deal)

In this situation?

The curriculum standards are reviewed every decade and serve as a template for textbook publishers. Texas's 4.8 million public school students make the state one of the largest markets for textbooks and a determinant of what the rest of the country's schoolchildren will study, with national publishers often tailoring their texts to Texas standards.

In general? Because alongside Chicagoans and New Jerseyans(sp?), Texans are really easy to troll. If subby submits a "LOL Missouri sucks" headline he'll maybe get one valiant Missouri defender and zero trolls to exploit that. This means no headline. But if you make fun of Texas, the trolls rush in knowing that this will be easy pickings, and the valiant defenders of the Great Republic of Texas will rise to her defense!

Texas has a lot in common with Quebec - a large population that refuses to speak english.

I work for a textbook publisher, so I'm really getting a kick...

Actually, I do. And we were already publishing special "Texas Editions" of a number of books. It doesn't stop with history and other social studies. Math-oriented books have to have more Juans and Marias written into the examples. They also have specialized teaching guidelines in place for numerous subjects that have to be adhered to. When they're that big, you can easily print a special DERP edition for history books.

So those textbooks are like print versions of Fox News.

I went to a private Christian school until 4th grade, lived in the South America and went to an all boys academy in 5th grade, then entered public school from 5th grade on in an affluent, densely Jewish populated town.

I honestly thought that Jewish people were extinct (ala Mayans, Aztecs) from my private school days. They talked about them like mystical, chosen beings and I was surprised to meet a bunch of little Goldbergs and Steins in 5th grade.

Wow, there's sure a lot of butthurt folks complaining about the Texas standards, but all of the examples given are actual facts. Clinton was impeached. Sanger did promote eugenics. The founding fathers did use religious principles in our country's early documents. Just because you don't like facts doesn't mean they aren't true.

To be fair this is because Missouri is two bastions of civilization surrounded by rural southerners: Saint louis, which varies between an uptight suburb and a demilitarized zone depending where you are and Kansas City, which is mostly pretty nice....I guess.

The new curriculum hasn't hit textbooks yet, but pop quizzes are expected to have a slightly different look -- Newsweek recently published new study exercises that the Texas school board is likely to adopt:

Well, we should certainly judge folks on what they may be likely to do, possibly. Probably...

It's more about the focus given to certain subjects in limited class time.

We could do a whole semester on Nixon's malfeasance, or war crimes in Vietnam, for example.

But that might take valuable class time from the "Apple Pie is Jesus' Love" segment.

2010-09-09 10:20:34 AM
The blame should be assigned to the school book publishers. They want to print one edition of a book for national use. Texas has this insane Christian book-panel that only wants religious-type bullshiat in the state's textbook. Texas buys a lot of school books. So the publishers print one edition that conforms to the wack-job Texas standards. Texas doesn't need its own tag. It needs to get the hell out of the US and get a 7th flag.
