The big chess tournament was taking place at the Plaza in New York. After the first day's competition, many of the winners were sitting around in the foyer of the hotel talking about their matches and bragging about their wonderful play. After a few drinks they started getting louder and louder until finally, the desk clerk couldn't take any more and kicked them out.

The next morning the Manager called the clerk into his office and told him there had been many complaints about his being so rude to the hotel guests....instead of kicking them out, he should have just asked them to be less noisy. The clerk responded, "I'm sorry, but if there's one thing I can't stand, it's chess nuts boasting in an open foyer."

I used to play chess at lunch with some guys I worked with. One day I went with one of them to a dive bar after work. The cute little 22-year-old barmaid was showing off a nice chess board she just bought. She was very impressed with the carved stone pieces but seemed to have trouble naming them. I leaned over and said, "How do you play this game?" My buddy busted me by telling her, and everyone within earshot, not to play me. I ended up paying for my drinks with my own money.

We used to do a similar thing; however, the way we played it was that it was the player who took the piece that had to do the shot. It worked as a kind of handicap system.

"PLAYING a game of pool or darts at your local may seem as natural as having a schooner or a pot."

I know all of those words, but the sentence makes no sense...
