I believe I might pick him up off the free agent list for a spot start. I would imagine he might get a few calls going his way.

I predict at least one balk called against him. Eleven Ks as well.

This is the betting opportunity I've been waiting for. Has there ever been a bounced strike that wasn't swung at?

First pitch fastball, right down the middle. Which just happens to get past the catcher untouched.

Theres no telling with this guy. He is not opposed to screwing over Galaraga for no reason at all at the worst possible time.He may go full Hochuli again. If I was betting Id bet a different game.

So Joyce cost him the perfect game, then apologized gracefully and genuinely. Galarraga accepted the apology humbly and in good spirits. What exactly are we expecting to happen here?

Bunch of panty tight fans who believe Joyce was out to get Galarraga, in actuality Galarraga will pitch just another game and Joyce makes 80% of the calls right. Other 20% are either bad calls or close plays. I have total respect for Joyce, he knew he made a mistake, seriously who cares? Oh besides the ones wearing panties.

Beat me to it. Up next in sports, umpires rotate to different cities and call games pretty much at random.

This. If Joyce hadn't manned up and never admitted his mistake(like a certain hairsprayed NHL ref) this would be a story. But Joyce did man up, so there's nothing to report.

Right on, he was the plate ump the next day after this too.

Will it be a boo hoo fest like when Galarraga brought out the lineup?

Nothing. There is literally nothing interesting about any of the things in this headline or the linked article.

Odds mikaloyd is a Detroit Tigers fan: better than 50/50.

The guy has a long reputation among players and managers for being one of the best umpires in the game. I'll take their word that Joyce isn't a crazy loose cannon out to screw with some mediocre pitcher's career. One play doesn't make him into CB Bucknor.

uhh CB Bucknor is by far one of the worst umpires, if not for blown calls, good luck ever throwing a no hitter with him behind the plate, him and his floating strike zone is bs.

OMG THIS IS SUCH EXCITING NEWS.

Big farking deal.

2010-09-09 11:39:19 AM
Tigers fan here.

And it very seriously farking annoys me hearing baseball talking heads already referring to it as "Armando Galarraga's near-perfect game."

BZZZZZT!

No.

Galarrage didn't throw a near-perfect game; he threw a perfect game. And as soon as the doddering old idiot from Milwaukee is out the door, I imagine this will be rectified.

Try reading "Finnegan's Wake." Then tell me your opinion of your precious umpire.

This.

Unlike other sports, baseball doesn't need manufactured hype to get people interested in the games. Just look at Cubs fans.

wasn't Joyce named best ump a few years in a row by a player poll?

If MLB threw out all the non-9 inning no-hitters as unofficial, then there is no chance on your phantom perfect game. Just accept the fact that mistakes were made and it will be called a near-perfect game until the end of time.

You're correct. Instant replay proved he threw a perfect game, that's completely indisputable because the game would have been over if the call was overturned, no "what if" scenario allowed. Selig screwed up ROYALLY on that. Joyce is forgiven, Galarraga is admired and Selig is too stupid to know the right way to do it.

Actually, he threw the first ever 28 out game, a perfect +1 if you will.

Even if the Tigers protested the game, it wouldn't have made any difference. The Tigers won the game. The call did not materially affect the outcome.

Cite:

4.19 PROTESTING GAMES. Each league shall adopt rules governing procedure for
protesting a game, when a manager claims that an umpire's decision is in violation of these
rules. No protest shall ever be permitted on judgment decisions by the umpire. In all
protested games, the decision of the League President shall be final.
Even if it is held that the protested decision violated the rules, no replay of the game
will be ordered unless in the opinion of the League President the violation adversely affected
the protesting team's chances of winning the game.
(emphasis added)

2010-09-09 03:57:28 PM
I might add that the Tigers would have had to registered their protest before another pitch was thrown, and that they'd have to submit their protest, in writing, to the Commissioner's office before noon the next day. That didn't happen, either.

Schmee: Even if the Tigers protested the game, it wouldn't have made any difference. The Tigers won the game. The call did not materially affect the outcome.

I know, protesting wouldn't have done anything. This was a 1 in a billion shot and Bud Selig was too cowardly to acknowledge that technology could have helped Galarraga get what was rightfully his. If it had happened with 1 out I wouldn't be saying this. But the replay was conclusive and the replay proved he threw a perfecto. By virtue of that specific runner clearly being out Galarraga threw a perfecto. Selig had a teachable moment there to try to open a discussion towards replay in baseball and make a situation right (all officials get some kind of help these days, that line's been broken) but instead he decided to hold his retarded line and squander away an opportunity to make the game better.

2010-09-09 04:40:51 PM
Whether it's ever reversed or not, Galarraga, his teammates and Tigers fans lost the spontaneous moment in which it could be celebrated.

And it's only the greatest pitching performance in the history of a team that's been around 110 years or so, so no biggie.

But the semantics thing of how it's already talked about bugs the shiat out of me more than anything.

As in, "Isn't that the Tigers pitcher who almost threw a perfect game?"

"Almost threw" my ass.

Come up with a more appropriate way of saying what happened.

He'll always be the Tiger that threw the almost perfect game.

/perfect but for a moment of monumental blunder

Jim Joyce sounds like a moose choking on a garbage disposal.
keep him away from home plate.

I'm a Tigers fan and I don't think this is news even for us. Now if Galarraga could pitch well enough for us to stop sucking and get us in the playoffs, THAT would be news.

/ain't gonna happen
