(WGAL 8) Dumbass When breaking the news that a fire station will be shut down and workers laid off, you might want to say something other than, "The city's not going to, going to, burn up if we shut down one fire station and lay off a few people"   (wgal.com) divider line 24

This is an old tactic. Lay off people that are needed, stop services that will hit the voters at home. The same thing has gone on here. They close fire stations, lay off police, and paramedics. However The money was still there to build handicapped accessible crosswalks at every intersection. Most of which have no sidewalks leading up to them. If someone in a wheelchair were ever to be able to make their way there (in fair weather possible, in rain unlikely) They would have a crosswalk available to them to cross the street, only to face the next 500 ft. of rolling through wet Georgia clay to the closest bus stop. Miles if they were rolling the way on their own.

Don't even get me started of those nice brass frogs on the park benches.

I had cat incident at my house a year or so ago and the firefighters who came were so hot. If I didn't have a boyfriend at the time I would have totally gotten their numbers.

We actually need to close fire stations here in Philly but the fire fighters union scared the shiat out the old people a couple years ago, so instead of having an efficient number of stations, we've now got "rolling closures" because we don't have the money to keep them all open.

Number of fires is down something like 80% from thirty years ago.
Annual fire deaths is in the tens, down from over a hundred.

Most Likely Fed money there... We have the same things going on here. Lots of nice curbs, crosswalks and awesome things that look like 3' tall penises. And yes they have been vandalized with giant condoms.

The majority of fire services (95+%) these days are as first responders for medical emergencies, car crashes, and automated fire alarms in all urban and suburban fire districts.

I for one don't like the rolling closures of fire stations. A house down the block caught fire last week and it was 20 minutes (seemed like an hour) before the engines pulled up. Neighbors with hoses, extinguishers etc held things at bay. Funny thing, one of the 'rolling closed fire stations' was just a block away.

When your house catches fire, get back to me about fires being down 80% from thirty years ago. There is so much other crap this shait hole of a city could do without besides closing fire stations. And yeah, scare the bejesus out of people about closing fire stations. They should be scared.

I have a firefighter in my family who is a Captain now. The city manager first refused to allow him to take the position even though the civil service board said he was the one who deserved the promotion. Their argument was that because he has so much seniority, his salary would be too high. The kicker is, almost half of his salary is paid for by FEMA because he's on one of the emergency response task forces sent to hurricane/flood/other disaster zones like Haiti. Even as a Captain with lots of years in, he costs the city less to employ than a rookie firefighter does.

It's all politics. That's it.

Closing down a fire station should be the absolute last possible choice ever. Anyone who does any different should be considered a psychotic criminal.

The city of Flint laid off some firefighters a while back. And all of the sudden there were mysterious fires everywhere until some Obama money was used to hire back some of the laid off firefighters.

I wonder who set all those fires.

Didn't this happen in Philly with the rolling lay-offs and someone died in a fire because the closest Fire Dept was closed?
