I'm sure they'll eventually bend over on this issue, and just pick up where they left off. The outcome is undoubtedly going to be unpleasant. While I have no idea why the authorities are pressing forward with this soapy issue, it seems it will end on a back ended promise being made. I doubt the prisoners will enjoy the final thrust of it all.

Why was there bacon in the soap?!

Four bars of soap per week? Someone wants to smell nice for his rapin.

2010-09-08 11:31:33 PM
I can't see why they're getting themselves worked up into a lather about this.

2010-09-08 11:33:30 PM
Geez, only one bar of soap a year, how inhumane.

What, its per week? yeah, I don't see the problem here. 1 a week should be plenty.

The strike started last Wednesday after officials reduced the number of bars of soap inmates can buy at the jail commissary each week from four to one.

Jesus Christ. I can't imagine being the guy who has to clean the drains if these guys are going through multiple bars of soap in a week, cause that must be a sticky, nasty mess.

Are these little hotel bars of soap?

2010-09-08 11:45:43 PM
Wednesday that deputies have found an increased number of candy and snack wrappers in the trash cans of the unit where the inmates are refusing their daily meals.

I don't understand the total FAIL on the guards part. If the prisoners go on a hunger strike then you go into every cell and take away ALL edibles. They want to be on a hunger strike? Then they WILL be on a hunger strike. Not this psuedo-hunger strike which looks like what the Senate calls a friggin fillibuster these days. Not really a fillibuster and this ain't really a hunger strike.

The ones that are, kinda, sorta hunger striking should kill the inmates who are eating their food and use their fat to make soap. Or, they should starve themselves to death. As a matter of fact I hope they die a slow painful death while everyone laughs at them.

2010-09-08 11:55:32 PM
WTF? One bar a week? Unless these are like hotel-sized bars, how does that not last you like a month?

2010-09-09 12:17:11 AM
It's not a safety issue.

Soap, and other items (crackers, coffee, candy, cup'o soup) from the commissary, are commonly used as currency in most jails.

Ya I'm in line that if they're the little hotel jobbers that 1 a week is pushing it.
But if they are regular size bars. They are hoarding them.
Bring in Sheriff Joe as an inmate relations consultant. He'll straighten out that place right quick!

If these inmates think they can coast through this, they better think again. I recall an Irish spring in 1981 when some other prisoners did the same thing. They should just dial it back a bit.

I can make it a week on a little bar of hotel soap. How can they possibly require four full size bars a week?

Maybe it's that new Colombian white soap...

The soap at the commissary are the same size, and brands as you would buy at the store.

If you have no money, the jail issues you soap that is slightly larger than hotel soap, and you can usually get all you want.

In NYS, the soap is stamped "Corcraft", which is manufactured by inmates.

Don't get yourself in a lather over it.
Coast out of your ivory tower, and lever alone.

Question:
Inmates are allowed to shave right? So, what do they use as a shaving soap?
I use bar soap. Canned shaving crap is a waste of money. If you're in prison what do you use? And how is the control of the razor blades dealt with?

They use bar soap for the most part, although some places offer shave cream that comes in a tube, at the commissary.

Razors come in the form of those cheap yellow Bic disposables, that are signed out for 15 minutes, and inspected to make sure the blade is intact when they're returned.

In the jail where I live, you are simply issued a single blade razor. I think weekly you can trade it out for a new one. Shaving cream is sold. They also sell that horrible product that basically just washes the hair off of your face with a lovely intense burning sensation.

2010-09-09 02:42:16 AM
Another interesting note - since smoking is not allowed inside in Florida and as such not allowed in the county jail - the razors are used as makeshift lighters for whatever one can manage to sneak inside.

Heres how it works:

Take two batteries (AAA batteries are sold for the crap $20 radios they sell), put them one positive up and one negative up on the small metal table that is attached to the wall in each cell. Remove the razor blade from the housing, and break it in half. Place each half on top of respective batteries, and touch just the tips of each blade half to the other. This creates a very tiny spark. This spark can be spread into a cherry on what is called a "wick". A wick can be made by rolling a wad of toilet paper into a pointy stick shape and coating it with soap. Blowing on the wick in just the right way can result in fire.

Ridiculous isn't it?

Yes, it is a safety issue in many jails. Try to do a cell extraction when the floor has been coated with soap and water.

The rest is true though. These things are often traded.

As for the hunger strike thing, most of the time when an inmate declares a hunger strike, the officers have to take everything away from the inmate. All food, toiletries, everything except for his clothes and maybe a book. The water to the cell is turned off and they have the option of discontinueing the hunger strike at any time and getting something to eat. Most of the time, they go for a couple day at the most.

Mrpant... is also correct about ways to make fire. However, few inmates will actually take a razor apart due to the fact that if they are caught, they will be charged with making a weaqpon. This is much more severe than making a lighter other ways. The other way are a simple contraband issue as opposed to a weapon issue.

Naturally, these comments will not always jibe completely with the policy in your city/state. Most of the time it will be right on or close.
