Zamboro: That is too farkin' cute. I'd love a tame squirrel as a pet.

Due to having a mother that was a wildlife rehab expert, I grew up knowing that wild animals make very bad pets. There are only 2 exceptions to that hard and fast rule, and squirrels are one of them. They are easily litter trained and very affectionate. You'll have to buy new drapes daily, however.

It'd still be less annoying than a cat.

Will the Fire Department get this 'cat' out of the tree when it won't come down?

"I seem to be the go-to girl from my vet. Anytime someone has a cat they can't take care of, I'm the one they call. That's how we wound up with 18 cats and a squirrel," said Karen Watkins.

I can't tell, is this person in denial about being a cat person, or honestly clueless that the vet is using her to get rid of unwanted animals because they know she won't say no?

A buddy of mine once told me about some people with a pet squirrel.

He said that in their house, if anyone would try to light up a cigarette, the squirrel would appear out of nowhere and snag the cigarette from it's owner as they were holding it in their mouth to light it. Then it would face the former owner of that cigarette from a safe distance, shred it while chittering, then disappear again.

Kinda like an anti-smoking super hero or something. The imagery always made me chuckle.

/don't call me bro

I have a friend I haven't seen in years that had a pet squirrel. She had the same issue with curtains so she replaced them all with vertical blinds. She had her boyfriend build it a cat tree that was around 8.5' tall that it loved to use as it's substitute "real" tree.

More than likely the squirrel was eating them. Little farker probably was a nicotine junkie. It happens to squirrels that live in parks and other places people throw away cigarette butts.

Awww thats sweet. Cats are of course awesome and squirrels are cool as can be, but wouldn't this have been better as a Caturday thread?

I wasn't aware that squirrels have the respiratory structures that allowed them to create the purring sound.

2010-09-09 08:45:31 AM
1) The quality of a squirrel as a pet is dependent on the squirrel! The little fellow my mom adopted, while being loved and well socialized, had a hell of a temper. He hated all men and would occasionally attack my mom and I for no reason. He could also be incredibly sweet, but so can a lot of other pets that won't think climbing up your pants leg is a personal calling.

2) Our cats were terrified of above mentioned squirrel.

Sounds like an old Farside cartoon. "All seemed fine for Rocky the squirrel until mother had the neighbors over for dinner."

Oh, and all squirrels can purr and growl. The purr sounds like a buzzing sound and the growl sounds embarrassingly like little squirrel farts.

I had a squirrel that wasn't raised by kitties. It purred too. And sat on my head, and bit the ever-loving-shiat out of me when I wanted to put it back in it's cage.

/still has the scar

How so? That old couple is like the Duke and Dutchess of York compared to some of the hillbillies I've had the pleasure of coming in contact with.

I thought it was a well known fact that squirrels eat cameras to destroy evidence of weakness.

2010-09-09 10:21:39 AM
Why do I like this? I shouldn't like this. They're just animals. But theyre...so...fuzzy..

2010-09-09 10:32:20 AM
The two pet squirrel stories I know of ended with the squirrel viciously attacking the owners face. Come to think of it the only ferret owner story ended the same.

I think the other wild animal that makes good pets are skunks. Local comuputer shop named skunkarific has one that wanders the shop.

/Granted our cat bites through my wife's leg about once a year (and not enough to brake the skin four times a year).

Congratulations, you went on television. Animal control will be over shortly to put down the wild animal you domesticated. Once again, congratulations!
