In American that would be infringing on the company's Free Speech if we limit the amount of advertisements bombarding people. Right SCOTUS?

Yeah, fark the theaters for showing me commercials that I could see on TV.

I take my own sort of action. I always arrive 20 minutes after the stated show time. Of course this only works with show times and movies that aren't thronged by the great unwashed masses.

Trailers are sort of fun, but the commercials beforehand really annoy me. Of course, these days I only go to the movies a few times a year.

it's funny how instead of "digital spy" for the source, subby came up with their own: "some Movie Voiceover Guy".

I hope that this is something that we see more of around here, especially when it is a Digital Spy link, that would make Drew's site awesome and not suck.

I wish I was as clever as subby

She's no asking for much money, really in the $20 range, and she has a gripe I'm sympathetic with. So good on her.

Last time I went to the movies, and I won't say how long ago that was, there was 35 minutes of previews. Yes, I did show up 15minutes early because if you're not 15 minutes early for everything but parties / dinners in people's homes you're an inconsiderate fark. However, the commercials continued 25 minutes into the designated show time, making the total "movie" time almost three hours long.

I realized how irrationally angry I was about the advertising and never went back. Netflix quick releases for me.

No. And why would you even think that? Is... is it a troll? Must. Resist. GAHHHH Free speech does not apply in private business! *bangs head on desk*

Commercials are 90% of the reason I stopped going to the movies. Seriously if I buy the ticket and you want to "monetize" me go fark yourself.

2010-09-08 06:52:52 PM
At the cinema I go to, the ticket sellers tell you a) when the movie starts, and b) when the ads and previews end, and the movie actually starts.

I like to watch the previews so I usually go in early. Recently saw an ad for Johnny Walker starting that dude from Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. That was a cool ad.

YAY for her, one of my pet peves too! I'm not laying out dollars to watch ads, just show me the movie on time.
And will you idiots turn off your cell phones, you are not so important that you can't shut it down for an hour and a half.

In the case, which has been accepted by the People's Court in Xian, Chen has also called on commercials to be reduced to five minutes or less and for cinemas to publish the lengths of ads on its website, cinema foyers or via a customer hotline.

If they did this in the States, I might even start going to movies again.

What about TV? I thought there were rules and shiat that the FCC was supposed to enforce about commercials on TV. I swear to god, for a 60 minute block of television programming, no less than 20 minutes of it is commercials, seriously. and the thing that really makes me want to farking murder people is the volume. I'll have to turn the volume up to 40 on my tv to hear Breaking Bad, and then when it goes to commercial, my farking ears are bleeding, because the volume is so farking high I run the risk of shattering the goddamned windows. I swear to god I'm going to start a new cable company. Heres my plan, A cable company that has no commercials with programming, but a seperate 5 channels for nothing but commercials. I think someone would pay an extra 20 or 30 bucks a month to be able to watch any show they wanted and not have to see any farking commercials, the trick would be sweetening the deal for the advertising companies. Although it would make said companies have to step up their game and start making more entertaining commercials if they wanted them to be watched.

See, I'd start a network that only ran commercials on the half hour. 5-6 minutes of them. Just enough time to go take a piss, grab a fresh beer from the fridge, and still not miss any of the show. And maybe run a few more minute of commercials between shows. If it ends at 8:53, then I run ads until the next one starts promptly at 9.

It's because you're supposed to DVR it and fast-forward through the ads stupid.

2010-09-08 07:04:30 PM

Instead of paying extra to see a movie in a special "Director's Theatre" or extra for a 3D movie, I'd consider paying a few extra bucks just to see a movie with no previews or ads.

And anyways when I was a kid 3D movies didn't cost extra money. What a ripoff.

Magnavox sets used to have a a feature that would "normalize" audio. So if you had it set to "25" (whatever "25" was supposed to mean) and then flipped channels or the broadcast changed it didn't go up in volume or go down in volume.

Then they stopped putting this feature in their sets and now I hate them.

I'm getting a kick, as my wife and I were talking about this during the ads when we went to a show last night. I think it'll just get worse, and there will be more & more.

But I only go on Tuesdays because it's cheap night. I'm spoiled with my home theatre, as is most of the modern world nowadays.

Thank you Netflix. I just don't go to theaters any more. I've only seen one movie on the big screen the entire year--Scott Pilgrim. After ten minutes of previews I was ready to shout "Get ON with it!" Monty Python style.

2010-09-08 07:16:19 PM
Wait we can sue for too long pre-movie ads? Why didn't someone say something?!

2010-09-08 07:16:41 PM
How about just not going to movies anymore? Why does anyone need to sue to make a point? Show the film companies and theater chains that enough is enough by taking your entertainment money elsewhere.

I don't particularly like all the ads before movies, and I like that she seems to be doing this to get the companies to take notice (rather than just trying to screw them out of some money), but I can't see how this woman is in any way harmed by the ads. It's not like movie ticket prices are based on the length of the film, and therefore she's not getting her money's worth if part of that time is taken up by ads. Nor is it a surprise to get ads before a film -- I assume that even in China pre-show ads have been airing for a while.

Should I sue if I go to a sporting event and see non-sport activities during half-time?
What about if I go to a casino and have to wait a few minutes for a seat at a popular table?
Or at a comedy club, what if the opening act isn't funny?

From a business perspective, the whole point of TV shows is as a way to get you to watch commercials. Sure, they are entertaining, but that is just what is needed to get you to watch the commercials in between.

2010-09-08 07:24:34 PM
Advertisements before movies should make the movies free, or really cheap. Or are the Theaters saying that we all would be shelling out a few more dollars per ticket if it were not for the Ads?

Honestly, why do Theaters at all? We can have the same big screen, hi-def, hi-fi, Dolby Digital Surround Sound experience in our homes now for some up front investment in a home theater and a net-flicks account. Buy your snacks at the grocery store for a fraction of the price. In a year or two you have completely recouped your initial investment and the rest of the savings is gravy. Not to mention the savings in lost time. Adds on the DVD? Just his Stop, then DVD Menu. Gone.

2010-09-08 07:27:18 PM
Perducci: How about just not going to movies anymore?

I don't but mostly because of the cost. For me, I use a 720p projector with a 110" screen, Netflix, and patience. After doing this for a year or two, I find I no longer have problems waiting for DVD release, although DVD release times seem to be getting faster.

I'm probably averaging about one cinema visit per year at this point.

2010-09-08 07:29:12 PM
Trailers before movies in a theater I don't have a big problem with. More often than not it's a preview for something you haven't heard of yet, and regardless of how shiatty the actual film ends up being, the trailer is still exciting.

The problem I have is with buying a DVD, then being shown FOUR farkING TRAILERS for shiat movies I couldn't give a fark less about before I get to the actual DVD menu. Disabling the root menu feature so that I'm absolutely forced to wait them out sends me into thermonuclear levels of rage.

This is exactly why I have zero sympathy for large media corporations when they blubber about how piracy is hurting their bottom line. Try not making it so farking excruciating for paying customers to attempt to enjoy your product, then we'll talk.

No matter how stupid the commercial/preview is, there is always at least one person that laughs at it.

I guess it's just sensory response. "Oh, I'm being presented something that is supposed to be funny, I will laugh at it even though I personally don't find it funny. Moving images entertain me."
