FTFA: "The global market for make-believe merchandise has nearly doubled in two years to an estimated AU$3 billion (US$2.7B), up from around $1.5 billion in 2008."

"I see that as a benefit. But I can't see it taking off."

Yeah it's never going to make them any real money...

What a virtual Snoop may look like...

I did an iPhone app for a company that was working with Snoop. Their first Snoop app bombed and they stiffed me on the contract.

Asshats!

That's true, I've never actually held an mp3. Those poor suckers using iTunes, they don't even realize that they're getting ripped off...

So glad the economy is well enough that people can spend real money on imaginary items.

A bunch of my coworkers play Second Life and I'm trying to get in on the whole 'ripping them off' deal. I've read articles about people selling stuff on there and making good money.

This is nothing new. I remember back when the original Sims came out, you could buy virtual furniture, wallpaper, carpet, & appliances for real money.

Guilty of this a lil bit.

Wife and I bought each other fishing chairs for WoW. God help me I love the thing. She also has the Panderan and lil KT pets. Fark it we have the disposable income.

Instead of doing the race track thing in Dal I'll use my chair on the balcony that overlooks the well. I'll sit up there, and drink/throw booze for Jubling and/or Ooze to go get.

Neither of us will touch the sparkle pony though; and I'm 98/100 mounts . . .

Virtual goods are no different (and much cheaper) than stuff like your Margarita dispenser, spinny rims or witty t-shirt with the picture of Homer Simpson eating a doughnut.

As for Second Life, it's a great place to pick up a few extra honest $ doing what you enjoy if you have a bit of talent - either in graphics, music, teaching, machinima, or even building neat things with Legos.
