AHHH...now I understand what a shovel ready project really means.

Before the hate begins, I just wanna say I liked Mayor Daley, and his midnight-bulldozing ways. While his administration was/is the definition of corruption, I truly feel he loves Chicago and wants the best for it.

The man did a lot of good for the city, no doubt. I don't know if that cancels out the abuse of power and corruption, but he's insulated himself from the worst of the legal issues brilliantly.

The office of the Mayor is a f*cking valuable thing. Don't forget that.

Daley did quite a lot of good things. Like providing benefits for gay and lesbian partners of city employees, and doing it by using his power as mayor to make such changes on his own. And he did it out of the blue, one day there was an announcement and that was it. No build up, nothing.

Quitter.

Good riddance. Special thanks go to the Supreme Court for their decision in McDonald that made him go completely apoplectic, thus making him quit before another gun case comes along and finishes him off. It's not too late for that, is it?

2010-09-07 06:01:32 PM
He's quitting because the city is broke financially, and he has come to the conclusion that he cannot sell Lake Michigan to a private company.

I really thought that Daley would leave office the same way his father did.

The fight to replace him will be entertaining in the extreme. There is no heir apparent and no one has a political organization or base that is independent of Daley.

Be thankful the Tyrant passed rules you liked.

Imagine if he had forbade employment of gays and lesbians, or forbade their free association. Such are the vagaries of living under a tyrant.

Delay's son may be ready to run for mayor...

Then again, Oprah Winfrey is retiring from her television show next year which could set the stage for a mayoral campaign and then a Presidential Campaign in 2020. Aaron McGruder was right all along.

Adolf Oliver Nipples: Good riddance. Special thanks go to the Supreme Court for their decision in McDonald that made him go completely apoplectic, thus making him quit before another gun case comes along and finishes him off. It's not too late for that, is it?

It has nothing to do with McDonald v. Chicago. Like another poster mentioned, the city is broke but a lot of Chicago residents still have a hard time wrapping their minds around that. They don't want to think about it and don't want to concern themselves with it, hoping it magically it fixes itself.

Daley's ratings started seriously plummeting when he leased all of the parking meters to a private company for 99 years to plug a budget hole. All that money is already gone and it's been barely a year. But the parking rates went up 4x and every Chicagoan who had to park his car at a meter in the last 12 months muttered under his breath as he swiped his/her credit card: "farking Daley" - he lost the vote of just about every person who owns a car in this town.

There are other things - Meigs field is not one of them however, that was a long time ago and he was enjoying 70% ratings well after that. On top of the things I mentioned earlier, the other several things are a $1B O'Hare Expansion for which there is no money, the incessant leasing of city infrastructure (Skyway, all city parking garages, Midway airport [though the Midway lease failed]) and finally Daley's giant slush fund from all the TIF money he has been skimming from property taxes for the past 15 years. There's around a $1 billion in it, pretty much completely unaccountable.

It's an understatement to say that just about every Chicagoan with a passing interest on their city works is leaping for joy at this news.

Daley is also smart enought o get out before the shiat hits the fan. Everyone knows he is corrupt as hell, but he gets things done. He's probably embezzled an acceptable amount of cash and earned a reasonable amount of kickback, and now wants to spend more time with his family before he's forced to spend it with Blago and Ryan.

The real problem with that deal is that got absolutely farked. Everytime they close a street, they got to pay the farkers they leased the meters to.

Parade? Fark you, pay me.
Street sweeping? Fark you, pay me.

The only way Daley would leave that job is in a casket, sick wife or not. He knows he has a very real chance of losing next election so he would rather leave on his terms than being run out of town in disgrace.

fark YOU. YOU ARE WHAT IS WRONG WITH CHICAGO!

You are the reason we had to pay millions to victims of torture at the hands of police. Your blind eye is why tax dollars are used to grease the palms of everything. You are the reason fraud and waste abound. You are why we have a 10% sales tax, you're why we are understaffed by 2000 officers, you're why there are street cameras on every corner recording our every move.

Every cocksucker like you is why I am leaving this corrupt shiathole of a state. We as citizens DESERVE better than that.

Yeah, it was colossally stupid. I groaned when I first heard of the idea but I figured no one would be stupid enough to actually go through with it. The financial math disfavored Chicago so obviously. A year later, LAZ Parking is putting up credit card machines on the street: "farkING DALEY"

Honestly a Chicago Republican could be ok, as long as they as reasonably liberal on issues like gay rights. Illinois needs some serious change.

Q-Why did he tear up the airport?
A-Terrorism. Because everyone knows it's easier to drive your bomb through downtown then load it on a plane and then fly it back into downtown.

Q-Why did he seal up the freight tunnels?
A-Terrorism. Again everyone knows the easiest thing to do is assemble your bomb in a tunnel and then carry it downtown.

Clearly he watched too many spy movies.... Or did he???
