Apparently Google's graphic designers spent Labor Day weekend on the job because the search giant rolled out a funky new homepage logo today that's (wait for it) pretty baller.

Wait for it?

Best comment from article.

Michael Liston
Maybe it has something to do with Heisenberg uncertainty principle and the observer effect? The observer effect refers to changes that the act of observation will make on the phenomenon being observed. Which makes sense. I know I act differently if I know someone is watching me play with my balls.

Follow that to the linked PC World article and you find this great heading: "What's behind Google's balls?"

I don't not want anyone to waste their time, so if you get all of the balls off the screen at once, you get a special surprise.

For the lulz:

1) Open Task Manager on crappy work computer
2) Go to "Performance" tab with the nice graph of CPU usage
3) Play with Google's balls
4) Watch usage spike to 100%.

Good times. Waiting until I get home so I can see what it does on a non-crap computer.

Theaetetus: What's pretty slick is that they seem to be HTML5, not Flash.

Thats what I am guessing. Google is showing off what can be served in a large scale using HTML5 rather than some proprietary plugin like flash, shockwave, silverlight, etc.

All Apple iDevice grievences aside, there is the undeniable fact that flash sucks.

Core i7 went from 8% CPU usage to 12% CPU usage, if that's any help.

Yeah... In fairness, this thing has one core (but it's hyperthreaded! ...Too bad that means jack all nowadays) so I figure the effect will be a lot less pronounced, even on my 2-year old laptop.

Try using the latest version of a webkit browser (Chrome or Safari). Chrome is the fastest browser on PC and Safari is the fastest browser on Mac, so I don't know why you wouldn't have one of those installed.

Uh, no. TFD going ons can entice people to donate $5 a month to Drew.

Also, don't try to explain rules to someone who has been here twice as long as you.

Really? The graphic designers I know refer to programming as "that complicated jibberish with a bunch of semicolons" and would have said "Make the logo with a bunch of dots" while attaching an illustrator file of 5 differently colored circles.

This. I checked the source and saw just massive strings of html and only one call to a script. Pretty impressive, really. HTML5 is gonna really take the sexy up a bit.
