Meh.

Would you rather die of a heart attack trying to do something fun or at work? On a long enough time line we all die somehow. Live like there's no tomorrow because one time there won't be.

No, the whole marathoner died.

As a runner that's only a couple years older than this fellow, it's sad to see someone pass away while running. However, I would be willing to bet that this guy had some previously unknown condition that played a large part.

it's almost a guarantee. i run 13 miles a couple times a week. i can understand how your body might fail on you after 26, but 13 for someone in shape isn't that strenuous ... unless you have a condition.

have you ever done one? lots of people think it's really fun after they've done it. that's how i got hooked. i did it for a challenge at first, but walking away from the first one felt so amazing that i made it a normal part of my life.

They were very careful about the wording on this thing. I'm from the area, and all of the locals are aware that we average 1 death per year on this thing. No one knows why. It's like a death lottery

FTFA: This is the second time in 2 years

Yeah, or the third time in 3 years. Or the eighth time in 8 years... none of us is keeping track to be perfectly sure.

Sad that he died, but seriously, we expect someone to go down every year. Could be any age. That and the fact that running is not fun to me at all are two reasons you won't ever see me at this thing.

WaltzingMathilda: half marathoner, subby.

How do you know he wasn't a marathon runner?

Razorwolf: How do you know he wasn't a marathon runner?

let's say for the sake of the thread, that with the information available, and if we have to use one of the two terms, mine is the more likely.

Razorwolf: I'm from the area, and all of the locals are aware that we average 1 death per year on this thing.

1 death per year on a half-marathon? are you sure about this? seems implausible.

Yeah check the article. The guy that died last year was even younger. We don't know why, and we're not entirely sure whether or not it happens *every* year, but it happens most years, and thus people are comfortable with saying we average 1 death per year.

well, i did see 2 in a row in the article, but it seems odd to have so many people dropping at a half marathon.

WaltzingMathilda: well, i did see 2 in a row in the article, but it seems odd to have so many people dropping at a half marathon.

I showed that line of the article to my coworker:

"Here it says that this is the second time in 2 years."
"Well we've only had two in 2 years."
"That's what I said!"
"Yeah I remember a guy died two years ago as well."
"So they really do have one guy drop every year?"
"You know it. I'm not going near that event"

You hear about people having heart attacks while running all the time, I've never once seen someone drop dead of a heart attack at the Golden Corral or some such feeding trough

2010-09-07 03:35:14 PM
What has been said I was going to say--except it isn't only this marathon (or half), you tend to lose a person or two at most events like this. It is pretty sad, though.

It was the opposite for me. I hated running, every bit of it. I was running around 5 miles a day for a while and it was torture.

Started weightlifting, and found that to be a blast though. I'm still fairly weak though as I picked up a smoking habit between running and lifting which is hendering the fark out of me.

I never understood the concept of a Marathon. You want me to pay someone per each kilometer or mile a person run? Running somehow cures breast cancer? Wouldn't the money be better spent if it was directly given to the scientist doing the research? Wouldn't I have better spent the money supporting the scholarship of some kid studying in the hard sciences?

Either way, man wasn't design to run extremely long distances for pointless reasons.

Didn't the first guy to run a "Marathon" die? I thought the legend was that he made the run to report the results of a battle at Marathon and dropped dead after he reported it.

Well, if it was good enough for Pheidippides...

2010-09-07 03:40:12 PM
And now the required...

What do you expect from duplicating a race where the very first guy to ever cross the finish line died.

You may now return to the thread.

2010-09-07 03:40:21 PM
Well, he's more efficient than Pheidippides, did it in 1/2 the distance :)

2010-09-07 03:41:54 PM
Pheidippides died running the distance for which the race is named. Not only is the "challenge" over-rated, many of you who run massive distances throughout your life will be pretty much crippled if you live past 60. There are better ways to get aerobic exercise.

most people choose to instead become incapacitated and eventually die from diabetes, stroke, cancers, etc.

The first time I ran a marathon, I was ecstatic when I crossed the finish line.

So I signed up again the next year. The only thing keeping me going was to finish early enough so I could still get to my favorite bar while they were still serving the brunch menu.

The third year I went to cheer on a friend from the crowd and brought a flask.

2010-09-07 03:46:41 PM
I just ran a 25k yesterday. Over 600 runners and nobody died. Imagine that.

There are thousands of road races held all over the country every year and the risk death can't begin to compare to other routine activities, such as driving.

Anywhere you look people drop dead doing things they enjoy/that seem to be healthy. A climb in the mountains, a drive along the coast, a long soak in a hot tub.

If you're looking for a reason not to do something look no further than your irrational fears. Don't have any? "I'm from the media, and I'm here to help!"

He had run like 150 miles in three days, though.

I was just trying to point out that there are worse ways to go.

eh, i drink my fair share. enjoy a smoke on occasion as well. but i also run about 35mi a week on average, with some weeks getting up to 60, depending on the time of year. just fun to me.

also, i have absolutely zero joint damage according to the doctor, so, i don't know what the one guy above was talking about.

I used to run in college, but I traded that in for hiking a couple years ago and just flopping on a treadmill every now and then.

At least when I'm hiking, if I drop dead in the middle of Olympic National Park or something, vultures and god knows what will pick me apart long before medical assistance could arrive.

Some people are built better for it than others. Not every pro football player gets back-arthritis, either.

I suspect if you're not cut out for running, you find out relatively quickly and stick to biking or something.

I had a bunch of leg problems growing up (busted ankles, torn ACL, various joint pain for no reason) yet running never bothered me at all.

Even though I was never real serious about it, I did spend decent coin on running shoes which may have helped.
