My gf's uncle ran for provincial government about 15 or so years ago. She told me that workers for her uncle's campaign would go out and destroy opposition signs at night... it was a common thing that all parties did. She's had a cynical view about politics ever since.

The signs get the delegates name "you there". Most people don't vote based on the issues or research they've done on the delegate, they vote on who they like more and seeing someones name plastered all over everything is going to make them more familiar to you, and when it comes to marking someone on the ballot you're more likely to mark a name you know.
