But burning our flag and screaming 'Death to America' is just fine.

2010-09-06 09:47:01 PM
What? Nobody has drawn a handy-dandy cartoon yet?

2010-09-06 10:26:18 PM
This should be interesting.

Gato Negro: But burning our flag and screaming 'Death to America' is just fine.

You know how that gets you all worked up?

Yeah. That's the exact reasoning Petraeus is working from.

2010-09-06 11:56:17 PM
I predict a rational conversation from all sides here

2010-09-07 12:02:32 AM
I guess the question is, what is the point of burning the Quran? To piss people off? If so, how is that helping anything, strategery-wise?

I certainly don't think it should be BANNED or anything like that, but there's a huge wide area between "should be forbidden" and "is a good idea."

2010-09-07 12:03:07 AM
You know who else burned books associated with a religion they didn't like?

2010-09-07 12:04:24 AM
Nice how the left likes him now that Obama likes him.
Remember the Betray-us ad?

They need to get the global warming climate change croud on this one. Think of all the carbon dioxide and polar bears that will die as a result.

tenpoundsofcheese: Remember the Betray-us ad?

AND, if I recall correctly, Fartbongo didn't vote to condemn MoveOn.org for running their ad.

\although I don't think Congress should be in the business of condemning acts of free speech, I wonder if things are ... awkward between Fartbongo and Betrayus.

L. Ron Hubbard?

I agree that Congress shouldn't get involved.

Clinton voted against it and in typical fashion, Obama ducked. He didn't vote (probably on vacation). Biden didn't vote either. He was probably out washing his car.

It passed overwhelmingly.

Millions have suffered and died in this game of my god's better than your god. If it turns out that there is an almighty creator he's likely to want nothing to do with the pious zealots who conquer, kill and build empire in his name.

Deep-frying's okay, though.

/mmmm.... crispy deep-fried Koran.

Huh? WTF are you talking about?

2010-09-07 12:39:14 AM
In addition, an armed Christian organization that had pledged to protect the Dove World Outreach Center withdrew its support from the Quran-burning last week, stating the event "may diminish the work of the Holy Spirit to witness to Muslims."

That group's founder, Shannon Carson, said he agrees with the church's stance on Islam, which he called a cult "that is invading our nation." But he complained that the "liberal media" is using stories on Jones's plans "to distract, divide and enrage the public."

The only problem with the "an eye for an eye" mentality is that everyone ends up blind.

Wow, one group of religious freaks is pissing off another group of religious freaks?

Yeah, carry on about how ATHEISTS are the problem in the world today, morans.

NYT (new window)

"But curiously absent from the vote was Senator Barack Obama of Illinois, also a Democratic candidate for president, who had canceled a campaign appearance in South Carolina so he could be in Washington for votes.

Mr. Obama issued a statement calling the resolution, put forward by Senator John Cornyn, Republican of Texas, "a stunt." Mr. Obama said, "By not casting a vote, I registered my protest against these empty politics."

Mr. Obama had voted minutes earlier in favor of an extremely similar resolution proposed by Senator Barbara Boxer, Democrat of California.

Ms. Boxer's proposal, which failed, called for the Senate to "strongly condemn all attacks on the honor, integrity and patriotism" of anyone in the United States armed forces. It did not name MoveOn.org, but criticized the ad that appeared in The Times. Mr. Dodd and Mrs. Clinton also voted in favor of Ms. Boxer's proposal."

I have never heard it put that way before.

I hope that's sarcasm, because it's a paraphrase of one of the most famous quotes of the 20th century...

Confabulat: Yeah, carry on about how ATHEISTS are the problem in the world today, morans.

Hey now, we're full of hate and violence! I mean, just look at the ... err ... billboards? Yeah! Billboards with their hate filled messages like ... err... "Stop worrying and enjoy life"... errr ... wait ... uhhh ... "It's ok not to believe. You are not alone."... err... uhh..

See? Such hate. Such things as bombing abortion clinics, murdering doctors, burning the holy books of other religions, killing infidels, etc. All of those things pale in comparison to Atheist hate. :O

But I've been told atheism is just another radical religion! (By morons, of course).

No it's not fine, but ACTING EXACTLY THE SAME WAY doesn't make us superior, it makes us just as lousy. I used to think Americans were better than all that. The USA's right-wing has taught me how wrong I was.

I thought that was 'jobless socialist retirement sucking civilian Patraeus'?

2010-09-07 01:52:15 AM
I am glad Republicans will not attack Petraeus about this because of course in the past they pointed out that that would be unpatriotic.

And we know republicans never say one thing and do another.

Does this mean that one would have to choose between going to a Quran burning and having a 'I Support The Troops' magnet on their car?

2010-09-07 01:54:35 AM
Ignorant people will continue to be ignorant, and willfully so, unless dragged into civilized society.

You know what I'd like to see wiped off the planet? Ignorant people. If rational members of all groups were all that was left, things would be a lot more peaceful.

Stop quoting him, but seriously the right thing to say is that nobody on the left is saying you shouldn't be allowed to burn the flag or the bible. It is protected speech. That doesn't mean they support burning either. I don't agree with either of those actions, but I don't think they should be illegal. Thinking something should be legal doesn't mean I necessarily support it, but I don't think it's a good idea to legislate stupid morality shiat like that. It's not American to do that.

But it's still OK to burn confederate flags on 9/12, right?

2010-09-07 01:56:03 AM
Well, it's been, what, two or three years since our last really big book-burning in America? It's to be expected...

2010-09-07 01:56:10 AM
In before someone mentioned that the church has every right to burn the Koran, but that they wish they wouldn't because it would be insensitive.

/also if someone burned the flag, I would consider them an asshole, and if someone burned the Torah I would be grossly offended by their stupid action.

2010-09-07 01:56:39 AM
EL_FABREZ: But it's still OK to burn confederate flags on 9/12, right?

It's ok to burn confederate flags anytime. day or night. Hell...it should be encouraged.

is this the thread where we brag about burning their book and trying to take away their mosque? or is this the thread where we brag about building schools and clinics for them in their paradise of democracy that we so graciously handed them? i'm never sure what my right wing friends are proud of from day to day.

I agree. And they can't see anything beyond superficial aspects. It's like Christians vs. Muslims to them. When the problem is actually intolerant extremists Christians & Muslims (and other religions) vs. the tolerant non-extremists.

But that is too deep for these people to understand it needs to be something easy to pick out like race or religion for them to be able to tell the difference.

I'm pretty sure being insufferable dicks is something they are proud of 24/7. That's a good place to start with them.

My grandparents are sadly like this. Muslims are evil because they follow Islam, and I'm a bad person because I think democrats can do just as well as republicans (or better) at certain times. I try not to be a partisan hack when I can help it.

2010-09-07 02:01:00 AM
As a Christian I hope everyone realizes that this group does not represent every Christian any more than BinLaden represents every muslim.

Now, having said that, even thought I think the religion of Islam is based on hate for non muslim people, it is wrong to fight hate with hate.

2010-09-07 02:01:33 AM
For the Bushies who aren't clued in, remember that Petraeus was the American overseas commander under Dubya as well.

/Some of you might not have recollectollated that yet.
