Ah, I see MRE's are still just as nasty, unappealing and unpleasant as they were...god...twenty years ago.

/The French always had the best rations, usually including something fermented.

I dunno, man. I'd kill a hobo for more of those cheese packets.

Wow... I wasn't expecting to see cassoulet and venison pâté in an MRE... In MRE form it isn't exactly appetizing, but in a nice bistro or restaurant in Languedoc, Aquitaine or the Pyrennes, I'm sure it'd be absolutely delicious...

UNC_Samurai: Meals Rejected by Ethiopians.

I think they are hungry enough to eat the worst of the West's MREs. No matter what soldiers might say of them.

Somewhat interesting, but would have enjoyed a mouse-over each item so I know what I'm looking at.

Some of these could be put in a dog food container and you would never tell the difference.

Win.

What's up with Spain's "glucose tablets"? Some sort of local delicacy?

Is "musk flavored candy" popular down under? Sounds like the worst tasting thing ever.

2010-09-06 06:45:36 PM
Best MRE I ever ate was Potatoes Au Gratin. I have no idea how they got em right, but they tasted farking awesome. Every other MRE I ever ate was farking disgusting.

Combine them all into a dog food container and you would never tell the difference.

For some reason I read that as "The coolest interactive graph of... what? Soldiers eat you?"

Am I the only one who noticed most of these looked the same with the possible exception of the crackers?

Yes, and yes.

They really should include some kind of fiber or laxative in those. The US ones, at least, are about 3000 calories a day and will lock up your intestines like concrete.

Interesting that only one contained a toothbrush.

/okay, i might have overlooked it in others but too lazy to look again.

2010-09-06 06:49:25 PM
My god the one for the UK just looked nasty, even for an MRE.

2010-09-06 06:49:43 PM
Sadly, I was the guy who liked the ham and eggs C-rations and would invariably get it. Didn't know there was a steak and potatoes meal for the first year.

At my first permanent party location, we would get Cs in the mess hall for a week every month. You'd come in, there would be a big pot full of the meal cans, the cook would fish one out and you'd get a box with the rest of the stuff. Thought it was training. Turns out, the E-7 was selling rations on the black market and getting C rations to make up for the lost meals.

2010-09-06 06:49:55 PM
I like dehydrated food when I have the option and choice to eat it. I do not think I would like it to be my only option.

2010-09-06 06:50:11 PM
UK: Beans (I assume baked beans), nuts (any form). I'm out. I shall not fight an unprovoked and unjustified war on those rations

2010-09-06 06:50:24 PM
In theory, it's possible to get the pork ribs or even the beef stew. But not you - you're getting the goddam Ham Omelet for the sixth straight meal. And no, you can't have my Tabasco.

2010-09-06 06:50:35 PM
Anyone else notice that South Korea had kimchee in their meals? Isn't there some kind of treaty prohibiting the transport of chemical weapons that this violates?

/I know, I know, old joke...

On a more serious note, trying to pick the country of origin from the picture of the meal is quite challenging.

OMG MREs have skittles? Why don't they just make it ALL skittles?

/Stick some protein pills in there or something

The Italians actually include fiber tablets in theirs. Any idea what the "exotic beverage powder" in the German ration is?

Most of these looked... unappetizing at best. However, the French MRE looked better than the rest, save for the fish soup. Leave it to the French to include venison pate in their MRE, right?

Everything except Ukraine looked decent.

If the MREs are to be believed... Ukrainians must really like crackers.

I will never, ever forget the horror that was MRE #4... "Omlette" with cheese.

I saw fights break out over being the one who got the #4.

The gum in most of those is a laxative, fyi.

Not even close. The MRE's now blow away what we used to have in the 80's when I was in. If you're curious, buy one online and try it out.

The ones these days aren't too terrible. A far cry from the old days, I hear.

They are not that bad these days. The sloppy joe and chicken pesto are pretty good. Plus they come with M&Ms now

Yes, and yes.

It must be a cultural thing. I'm Australian and I LOVE it - I miss it sooo much, living in the US now. I took my boyfriend out there last year and he tasted some. His response? "Ugh, it tastes like an old man smells."

WHATEVER, man. Whatever. I'll take my Vegemite and my musk candy and sit over there ---->

I like the tiny bottle of Tabasco sauce.

Ah. Never tried it, in my camping days when we'd go through MREs like candy.

Oh yes. The heaters. Do not let the newbie activate the heater in a confined space. They smell horrible. Most folks I ran into prefer to eat cold.

Completely agree. I hate to be the wet blanket here, but these are not culinary issues here. The function is to provide the human body with exactly what it needs when it needs it. Taste? Suck me. Taste is for when you get home, if you get home. I had a friend stationed at Ft. Bragg and we ate MREs during camping/hiking trips - sure it wasn't delivery pizza/wings - but it was cool in an adult, camping out sort of way...

Some of those look tasty, but I remember what the old tasty ones tasted like, so, no, I don't feel a pressing desire to re-enlist.

I almost included "from the country that brought you Vegemite" in my response. Despite living in Melbourne aged 13-19, I never could aquire those tastes (though food in Oz rocks otherwise).

/misses Mortan Bay Bugs and Tasmanian salmon
