Let this be a lesson for fanboys and fangirls of brillant shows cancelled too soon.

/would you rather a 4th season of 'Firefly" with S4 Heroes suckage?

Pity.

It would have been so awesome to see Gabriel wake up from this crazy dream about people with powers, and go "damn, I should *really* cut back on the drugs..."

Given that Whedon was able to give us seven season of Buffy and five of Angel with only two seasons worth of suckage between them, I maintain my confidence that he could have given us more than one good season of Firefly.

The show started being total crap at the end of the first season by not killing off Syler (sp?). This opened a 'serious' drama into GI Joe cartoon mode. No one really gets killed, they only go missing for a few episodes. All the violence, drama, conspiracy and what not is for nothing. No one can really die, because the audience likes the characters too much, so the execs don't want to lose viewers by removing popular characters. This leads to soap opera story hooks that are even more absurd than people developing super powers. Once the storyline is less beleivable than the fantasy powers, the show is crap.

You've changed my mind. I was a fan through the good and the bad.
I watched, hoping the series would recover from the writer's strike.

I naively enjoyed seasons 3 and 4 for what they were.

And now, I will forever regard something I enjoyed and trash because a few cynics on the internet told me so.
I glad you guys decided to enlighten us plebes.
Otherwise, I may have gone on the rest of my life enjoying things for myself.

I would be lost without self-important and judgmental people like yourselves telling me what is or isn't good and offering valuable opinions on topics they have a basic knowledge of.

Thanks guys! You saved me!

This is the kind of internet snarkiness that makes me want to slap people upside the head (I know...'Welcome to Fark')

Why exactly are people saying 'Oh thank God there won't be a Heroes movie'

Really?

Would someone force you to watch it? Would a Heroes movie somehow prevent you from watching something awesome that won't exist if there is a Heroes movie?

I don't really give a rat's ass about Heroes, but there are people out there who are fans and who would enjoy a wrap-up movie.

So why are you people so relieved that those fans won't get the movie they're hoping for?

They did kill quite a few characters after Season 1. Some (IMO) were fan favorites too. Unfortunately, some others died maybe too fast before they could've possibly become favorites.

That is just after the point where I always stop watching it. And forget Hiro in medieval Japan, too. I just consider Season One a complete mini-series with Syler dead and everyone happy, and say fark the rest.

The main problem was that they did way too many fake deaths. Sylar, Nathan and all the Ali Larter characters all "died" multiple times until people just didn't care.

Come on. Season 5 of Angel was, by far, the best of the bunch. Surely the Angel season in question is season 4 or, possibly, season 3.

That, I can agree a bit with, especially Ali Larter's characters.

I loved season 1, thought season 2 was only ok, thought season 3 just got worse and hated the fourth season carnival thing most of all. but the show ended well, with happy endings and a story reset to where they might've gone forward with some of the early potential restored.

Or it could've sucked again.

2010-09-06 11:19:18 PM
Apparently I should have prefaced my opinion with "I think" to avoid getting the fanboys' panties all riled.

Look, I loved the first season of the show, but after that it went due south, to the point where I stopped watching the 4th season because I just didn't care. To attempt a movie at this point would solely be an attempt to cash in on a good idea gone terribly wrong, therefore I am glad it's not happening. The end.

Whedon also managed to give us less than half a season of "Dollhouse" before the story dragged interminably and less than one episode in four was good for anything but a cure for insomnia.

Without the crutch of "monster of the week", Whedon's a sprinter, not a marathon runner. I'll swear by anything he does that's under eight hours in total run-time (including commercials), but he frankly sucks at extended series.

Firefly didn't have that format-based immunity to the boring that Buffy did, and frankly it was already starting to drag when it for some reason decided that a flashback episode was a great idea like ten bloody episodes in. A good selection of actors helped, but they can only make up for mediocre writing so much.

TL;DR: Firefly season 2 would likely have ended up sucking harder than Heroes season 2.

//Buffy was the exception for the same reason Star Trek was great despite oftentimes shiatty composition: with a monster of the week show, you really just need an interesting idea to catch the viewers' imagination, and to some degree you're exempted from needing good dialogue, composition, plotting, etc. Buffy made no goddamned sense most of the time and looked like someone doing a high-school film project 75% of the time, but was still awesome because "ooh, shiny".

Did you catch Epitaph One and season 2? The Dollhouse story actually got quite good once they got past the engagement of the week storylines and started introducing the real story. The plot twist around Echo's handler strained credulity somewhat, but overall season 2 had some great stories, especially since the flash forward to the future in the Epitaph One made a lot of subplots far darker than they would have been otherwise (especially the Topher story arc). I really think they would have had a better shot if Epitaph One actually aired during the first season, so casual viewers would have known where the story was going in season 2.

Having just watched a marathon of THE MIDDLEMAN, which only lasted
12 episodes before ABC Family realized it was too damn good for
them, I have to agree with this sentiment: that show, in particular,
couldn't have lasted much longer given the very high quality of
the writing and the spoofiness of their premise.

Hmm, true. It seemed like they were mostly just killing off secondary characters after S1, however. They killed off fairly new ones like Danko or Kristen Bell's character, who were about a season old. The only instance of an older character getting killed was Nathan, and they took like 6 episodes to completely kill him off.

I actually think S4 was way, way better than S3 (particularly the first half). But I think that part of it was that everyone had used up all their tolerance for mistakes and minor stupidity on the shiatshow that was chapter 3. I actually went back and watched "Company Man" at one point, and while it was still awesome, I noticed a ton of little things that would've pissed everyone off had it aired in S4.
