Oh my God, rich people might have to pay their accountants a bit more to find better tax shelters and some software might actually be written by Americans who can actually write and document code! The horror!

Why not just make all companies that sell products in the US have to follow US Labor Law, regardless of where their factories are located?

At a minimum, at least. If local law is more strict, local law stands. But in order to do business in the US, they have to have minimum standards...

Everyone likes to biatch about the complexity of the tax code (except tax accountants), but it's striking that no President in recent memory has even tried to do anything about it. In fact each leaves the tax code just a little more complicated than his predecessor.

A rising tide lifts all boats. The Republican economic policies of the last ten years have concentrated on finding ways to drag supertankers & massive luxury yachts up into the air, leaving all the other boats stranded.

First, the tax is important, people are paying taxes for the benefit of the people who make less money. The people are difficult, you should get your money working.

Why is this striking? Yes, everyone complains about the complexity, but no one would agree on the solution. You can't keep the tax code functionally identical to what it is now while simplifying it, and the people pissed off will outweigh the people pleased.

I'm too busy clinging to my guns and religion to care what Obama has to say.

2010-09-06 12:54:38 PM
To heal our economy, we need more than a healthy stock market; we need bustling Main Streets and a growing, thriving middle class," Obama said.

"The sooner we rein in the red-tape factory in Washington, D.C., the sooner small businesses can get back to creating jobs and helping more Americans find an honest day's work," (Davis) said.

Semantics and rhetoric from parties that are fraternal twins. The important thing here is that Americans are enabled to still purchase and use copious amounts of oil purchased from friendly nations.

Obama promises to help middle class thrive

"So this Labor Day, we should recommit ourselves to our time-honored values and to this fundamental truth: To heal our economy, we need more than a healthy stock market; we need bustling Main Streets and a growing, thriving middle class," Obama said. "That's why I will keep working day by day to restore opportunity, economic security and that basic American dream for our families and future generations. Our plan is to hire more unqualified, overpaid government employees to pass a stacks of paper around to each other."

nowhere in the article that i read did it say anything about building statues depicting the working man. he was talking about initiatives to rebuild a largely crippled middle class rather than further stratifying the upper class. that's not communism, that's good social and economic policy.

Because they want everyone to be middle class or lower, it's just not fair that some people with education, intelligence and drive are more successful than others. We're all equals right? That means we should all be equally wealthy.

sure you can force companies to keep pay scale closer between lowest person and the CEO, that'd greatly increase wages across the board, but I don't want to live in a country that forces stuff like that, it isn't american, please politicians go somewhere else if you want to do shiat like this.

oryx: What is this middle class he speaks of?

There used to be this large section of the populace that worked hard and paid the lion's share of tax revenues to the federal government. They were known for their strength, fortitude, and work ethic. They were slowly replaced due to large tax breaks to the super rich and handouts to the fat, lazy, and deportable.

He spoke of efforts to create jobs,
As has every president since 1972 (and probably earlier)

make college more affordable,

So you increase student aid, which means that colleges don't have to worry that people can afford what they are charging, so they can pretty much charge more than the market would normally be able to bear.

Because right now, most current state schools ARE affordable, at least to the typical student graduating HS and enrolling (and staying) at a four year college. Sure, you might not be able to afford to go to a private school, but I'll give you a hint:

For your undergraduate education, it doesn't matter a whole bunch regarding the name of your school as long as it is accredited and not known to be poor for the field you are interested in.

I just don't want the solution to be inflation of tuition because more students can afford to go to college and universities can then charge more and more knowing that the student is just going to grab some more debt to cover it.

help the middle class build retirement nest eggs,

I'd like to see taxes eliminated on retirement accounts, and penalties potentially reduced.

It might seem counterintuitive to reduce penalties, but when people aren't afraid that their savings is being locked away from them, they will be more comfortable with the idea of investing it in their retirement accounts.

They should allow more temporary withdrawals without penalty and have them pay it back at a modest rate (some 401k programs allow this, but many do not, and I don't know if many or any other IRAs allow it)

The money WILL go back into the account, but it allows for some flexibility for future uncertainties (job loss, fires, injuries, etc) Even for activities like purchasing vehicles, I'd support it, since large purchases DO help our economy, and traditional loans tend to suck money out of the economy.

Obviously have penalties if it isn't paid back on schedule, but there should be more options to access/use that savings account. Even if people don't ever need it, knowing that they could access it in time of financial stress would be useful.

And if you are worried about people abusing it... well it isn't worse than the current situation where they just don't save at all and we end up supporting them anyway.

cut taxes on these families

Again, said by every president since 1972. (and again, probably earlier)

and stop health insurance companies from refusing to cover people with pre-existing medical conditions.

There are some huge problems with this one. If we are going to go the insurance route for our healthcare, this could cause some serious issues.

In general, I don't like our current views towards insurance. I believe it should be something to help you cover catastrophic issues which would normally bankrupt you. Our current system just feels like a way to spread out the payments into fixed monthly installments.

I've got a high deductible on my car. It saves me from having to buy a new car if it's ever totaled, but I'm not paying an extreme premium just to cover things which I normally hold back a little bit of my paycheck for (Windshields, bumpers, etc)

Same thing with homeowners insurance. I don't care if I have to pay $2000 to fix the furnace. I DO care if I have to pay $30,000 to fix a collapsed wall or $200k for a total loss.

Exactly. Sooooo, the solution is to tax educated, hard-working business-owners and employers? That sounds like a terrible solution. I find it funny that the Corporations and Government did this to themselves. NAFTA killed many American jobs. Corporations moved their factories to Mexico. They pay no tariff to import their goods. Funny, the US Government loses tax revenue and customers are making less money or no money so they can't buy goods. Good luck with that! Barack Obama is a Corporatist.

idolized in what way? are you referring to the fact that we have a federal holiday celebrating the labor movement? or just the fact that obama felt compelled to discuss the middle class on labor day?

IT also gets gasoline spilled on it. But then gasoline spills release a lot of carbon into the air, which is why I have to search around to buy special gas tanks that don't require that really crappy nozzle which makes me spill more gas in the first place than just the basic funnel nozzle which worked really well.

So, I'm spilling more gas, onto that blade of grass near the garage, releasing carbon, which grass being a plant, craves like electrolytes. So in a way, pouring gas onto those blades of grass is like doing them a favor, and that tall blade of grass over on the other side of the yard is getting shafted from all the sweet sweet carbon emissions.

Until I slice it in half of course, suburban life demands ritual sacrifice.
