Interesting song, but I just had to explain to my wife what a Rick Astley is. She's a bit younger than me and had never heard of him.

That's why you should never marry a 13 year old.

This is our fault.

2010-09-06 01:43:56 PM
Not bad. I don't think it'll have much success in America, but it should do well in Europe.

Now, maybe if he did a duet with Snoop Dogg or Taylor Swift...

And wait... ONE-HIT WONDER?! Mediaite is a bunch of farkin' idiots. The Rickster had FIVE songs in the Billboard Top 10 in the US between 1987-1991. Ignorant article writer is ignorant.

I hate to be that person, but this was released back in June. Not that I'm complaining, mind. I was a fan back in the eighties, so I'm glad to see that he's still around and perhaps making new fans.

FTFA: "Here's Astley's new single, "Lights Out." It's very Clay Aiken."

No, it's very Rick Astley, and I like it.

It sounds like he took a Coldplay instrumental and sang his own vocal over it.

Way to go, internet. Thanks so much for that.

Rick Astley is awesome and he clearly has a sense of humor about himself and his past music. So good for him. The song is actually pretty good. Wouldn't be ashamed of putting it on the iPod.

2010-09-06 02:34:02 PM
Who wouldn't go to one if his concerts now?

2010-09-06 02:37:49 PM
That song was less horrible than I expected. Way to go Rick.

Came in to say this. Wiki "Rick Astley discography" to see his worldwide chart success.

So, internet: next time you decide to pluck a random '80s one-hit wonder out of obscurity in the form of obnoxious yet somehow deeply satisfying prank, think it through.

not bad, go Rick!
note to the director, too much camera on a track around him and note to Rick too much jesus arms.

2010-09-06 03:02:55 PM
Not bad, not bad. It's a little flat as pop music goes (but then again, it's a bit on the adult contemporary side). And he's just totally stiff that you kind of wonder if it was lack of practice or the fact that he might not have ever had presence in the first place.

Whatever. Good for him.

The hell you say "too much jesus arms". He's Rick James Astley, biatch!

"So, internet: next time you decide to pluck a random '80s one-hit wonder out of obscurity in the form of obnoxious yet somehow deeply satisfying prank, think it through. You never know what you'll unleash on the unsuspecting masses. Again."

You mean /b/. Are we just calling the /b/ the internet from now on, or is this article writer and these people below this sentence just to dumb to know who's really responsible?

whconner4: Way to go, internet. Thanks so much for that.

This is a surprisingly good song. I didn't expect to enjoy it that much, although I unironically enjoy his 80s material

King Something: This new Astley material is pretty cool, as cool as Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth joining forces to cover Diamond Head's Am I Evil? in Bulgaria (new window)

I just spent the last fifteen minutes idly clicking related videos because I decided to stick around and find out what that sounded like. I'd like them back now, please.

I dunno. I've always been partial to Rick Astley's - Never Gonna Give You Up. (new window)

2010-09-06 04:37:52 PM
Not a bad song. Yeah it's, as the reviewer said, a bit Clay Aiken, but maybe Astley is using the song as Idol-bait to get invited on the show to perform it. It is a short, inoffensive song.

Good stuff and the Beaker vid still makes me laugh.

Yes. Yes, it is our fault but I can certainly think of worse things to be responsible/blamed for.

'Cry For Help' ftw.
