When I was a teenager, my acne got really bad. I went to a dermatologist. He gave me a prescription for accutane and popped all my zits with some medieval torture device about as long as your finger with little loops on the end. It sucked. The acne, not the device. It used pressure.

This is something Jackass 3D will feature. They were actually casting for someone with a nasty pimple to pop.

Oh hails yeah... Gotta agree with you there. The aforementioned popthatzit.com links are okay, and youtube has some fairly decent ones out there (I'm generalizing here, zits, boils, cysts, festering infections, et al) but I've seen some so massive, they drain the contents into 3 mason jars worth of yellow-green, mucusy goodness... Even saw one cyst wherein the dr puts his whole hand inside the thing, scooping out what must be gallons of infectious goodness.

Some people collect stamps, others enjoy knitting,... some of us enjoy the explosive release of these stewing volcanic growths, nurtured until ready for harvesting, prepped with warm compresses, and expelled by someone with the tenacity and wherewithall necessary to exhume the beasty fluid within...

A lot of acne problems today can now be simply cleared up permanently with prescriptions. I see a lot less "pizza faces" than I ever did when I was a kid.

The "Oxy 5" and other OTC crap are as worthless as homeopathic cures.

I think the nice name for those tools is "extractors." I've seen them sold in Sephora and Bed Bath & Beyond type stores.

The side-effects aren't that common, but I guess when they affect you, they REALLY affect you. Everyone I know who took it either had none at all or severe problems, nothing in between. I had to do two courses of the stuff when I was in high school and had no trouble with it.

The sick part,other than the abcess is that most people do not wear gloves when handling them. And you wonder how MRSA and staph infections get spread?

I was working at a health care clinic that saw a large population of the homeless and drug addicts. I think some of the guys would come in and try to gross me out by showing me their infected wounds. The one that kind of got me was a man who had gotten an abcess from shooting up drugs. It wasn't the abcess it was the stench that came from his wound. He was treated in another part of the building and the stench was so bad all the doors had to be opened to get fresh air.

Wow, you are an old-timer here! That thread was pretty nasty, one story in particular stood out about a lady who went to town on her husband's back zit during their honeymoon for 20-30 minutes and had found scars from his previous girlfriend doing the same.

Those are pretty freaking disgusting in a fascinating kind of way. I know someone who needs to see those videos... screamed like a baby the first time they saw a maggot hop.

I think I have to call "shenanigans" on the whole "don't pop your zits" advice. I have never had any serious scarring or problems as a result of popping a zit.

The only kind I don't try to pop are the really deep (usually painful) ones that aren't "on the surface" and are too deep to pop. Other than that, I have only ever gotten whiteheads, and I think they can lead to scarring if they aren't popped.

I think the trick is in the "how". As long as the pressure is gentle, even, and directed in the right way, the chance of secondary infection or scarring is almost nil. Plus, like any wound, it should be cleaned after popping with an anti bacterial. (I prefer rubbing alcohol...no sense messing around.) Rubbing alcohol makes a good astringent and face cleanser in general if you have oily skin, and will help prevent future outbreaks if used regularly. Just don't get it in your eyes.

I not a dermatologist though, so you results may vary.

The whole "don't pop the pimple" thing is just a farking ploy to get you to buy their garbage. for the average person who gets an average amount of zits, it's often BEST to pop them (with the proper extractor) so that they don't sit there and get bigger.

/always consider what motives are behind the propaganda.

alot of those videos are cysts... you shouldn't be popping cysts. Big things on your back that won't pop with normal finger pressure are cysts and should be removed, or left alone. Popping them or cutting them open is MUCH worse and a big risk of infection.
