tortamus: A slideshow? I thought today was a holiday from labor.

I found the whole holiday quite ironic, that we celebrate LABOR Day by not working at all.

Wouldn't its name suggest we're all supposed to pull double shifts that day or something?

The effect is amplified by having the attention span of a 3 year old freebasing Ritalin.

I LOVE slideshows. Now we can have a pointless internet argument while their moms get them more soda.

The first Labor Day in the United States was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City. It became a federal holiday in 1894, when, following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with the labor movement as a top political priority. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike. The September date was chosen as Cleveland was concerned that aligning an American labor holiday with existing international May Day celebrations would stir up negative emotions linked to the Haymarket Affair. All 50 U.S. states have made Labor Day a state holiday.
(From Wikipedia, "Labor Day")

This just in, as much as conservatives/reactionaries/robber baron apologists love to decry "socialism" in America... all that socialism (workers' rights, benefits, safety laws and regulation of industry) is probably what saved your country from having a communist revolution, or at least a bloody attempt at one. It's hard to appreciate how ghastly the lower working class's life was back then, and how brutally attempts to organize for their rights were oppressed (often by police working almost explicitly for large companies). People were VERY angry that requests for basic improvements that would make their lives better were responded to with beatings and arrests.

Why do we have that eight hour day? Why do we have those mine safety laws? Why do we have all those laws busting the sweatshops? Were they benevolent gifts from an enlightened management? No, they were fought for, bled for, died for, by people lot like us. They died not on the battlefield to fight another dumb bosses war. They died on the picket line to give all of us a better future. - Utah Phillips

lethargically frisky: Can someone please tell me why everyone biatches about slideshows on fark?

Sure. You can put all that content on one page, not forcing the reader of the article to click X-times.

Or. You can be an ad-revenue whore, and split it up into tiny, digestible pieces requiring the user to navigate through X-pages to see the same content a bit of scrolling could serve nicely for.

If it were a list of the top 100 words used for being ignorant of slide-show pain, and you REALLY wanted to read it, which would you prefer?

I would like to point out that Canada did not invent labor day. Historians often get this mixed up. In truth we invented Labour Day which is a vastly superior holiday in which we spread maple syrup on our Canadian Bacon and eat it in mass quantities while waiting for our finest sled dogs to deliver their whelps; this ensuring our continued existence. It is this, their labour, that we celebrate.

2010-09-06 10:56:25 AM
Workers rights are silly! If we didn't have unions demanding humane treatment of workers and protecting them against vastly more powerful and wealthier management, management would be free to let magical market fairies take everything, because everyone is always free to act out of nothing more than purely rational economic self-inter...

Fark it I can't finish that.

So what you are saying is that unions came about because rich people where buying politicians to write and enforce laws that kept the little people from improving their lives. Fast forward a few years to now and the rich unions goons are the ones buying the politicians to keep the little people in crappy jobs so they will be forced to pay their dues. Fight all you want for or against socialism it all comes out the same.
Powerful people will use the money (control of banks, energy supply), propaganda (control of TV/movies/news) and government (control of congress/cops/military) to keep that power. Forming a union and giving that union power over you is just bowing before a new powerful master. Don't pretend that the gifts you gain from your new master don't have a price of your freedom as well as the blood you spill in defending its power.
