I saw a 7:45 showing of Machete on Friday, and there were 9 people in the theater.

I liked it. Danny Trejo needs to be in more movies in a more central role.

Machete was awesome, and for such a gory and niche film, I don't think third place is so bad.

Anyone seen The American? They both look pretty good, though in quite different ways.

And 'Inception' is still in the top 10 after 8 weeks in release, and only dropped 7% since last weekend.

A lot of the movie reminded me of the Hit Man series of games, especially the part where they played Ave Maria. That part was amazing.

i thought machete was absolutely awful. so half-assed it was astounding, looks like they did the whole movie in just one take. there was absolutely no effort put into anything.

danny trejo looked fat and short in some scenes, it was embarrassing. steven seagal looked awful. and i wasn't expecting high art by any means. macgruber, which was about a billion times better, was so much better shot and paced.

it deserves to fail.

I caught it about a week ago or so (long story).

Loved it.

I can't wait to give the DVD more than a few spins when it comes out.

Saw The American when it came out Wednesday night. I don't know why, but for some reason i was expecting a thriller a la the Bourne series, or something with a decent amount of action. The American is pretty much anything but that...still enjoyed it immensely, it just took me a few minutes to adjust.

/also has a ton of shirtless George Clooney doing pushups, if that's your thing
//seeing Machete in a couple hours

Does it matter? It's been one of the bigger hits of the year and has garnered a lot of critical praise. It's easily made back its production and marketing budget in the theatrical release when you account for worldwide grosses, and its guaranteed to have a long life on Blu-Ray and DVD. I'd call that quite a success for a movie that is a bit more highbrow and challenging than your typical summer popcorn movie.

I saw it with my brother and a few friends last night... funny as hell. Felt like a messier and Mexican Black Dynamite, although I think BD wins in total laughs. You really know what you'd be getting into if you watched the red band; if you thought it looked funny, or you thought it didn't, you're probably right.

It was sold out here when I tried to see it, but I live in Austin, where it was filmed, and it's kinda playing to the Austin Alamo Theater Aint-it-cool-news butt-numb-a-thon Fantastic Fest enthusiast choir anyways.

It's nichey, like Grindhouse was, and will use up its allotment of fans in like two or three days. I bet I shouldn't have any trouble buying a ticket next week.

/I hear the American is good, but slow.

I went the arthouse route & saw The Girl Who Played With Fire, even though I torrented it. Was pretty darn good.

I saw Machete, and yes, it was much better as a trailer.

If I had more cash I'd go see Inception for the third time. It's an excellent piece of craftsmanship.

Guess they'll have to soothe their pain with the $660 million it's made worldwide.

Only 35 movies ever have, in the entire history of the box office. (not accounting for inflation)

Hmm. So I guess people DO still go to movies without doing any research about them whatsoever.

saw "the american" last night...good movie, not an action flick by any means...

think "up in the air" without the humor and about a hitman...i loved it, the wife meh'd it...

/lots of good nudity from Violante Placido (hot italian chick)
//great pacing for giant lack of dialogue
///opening scene was a total WTF

Saw Machete 3 hours ago and enjoyed it quite a bit, but I was a huge fan of Grindhouse as well. If you go expecting completely unsubtle fun and silliness, then you'll not feel like you were swindled out of money.

Movie could have used some better gunfights though.

2010-09-05 05:55:35 PM
Saw "The American". Definitely marketed incorrectly. It's not an action movie, by any means. There's action in it, sandwiched between long, Euro-style shots of Italy that just linger there, or long shots of Clooney's face, or naked women, or Clooney doing push-ups.

And it was good too. I liked it. A lot of people won't.

2010-09-05 05:59:12 PM
Saw Machete on Saturday. It was an absolutely great matinee movie. It was hilarious and schlocky in a way that really worked well for it.

/There's also lots and lots of titties.

2010-09-05 06:09:02 PM
Machete was ok, about halfway through the over the top stuff just stopped being fun to me. Also it seems like all the scenes from the Grindhouse trailer was just shoehorned in.

It hasn't opened in China yet (or it just did, I forget which). Considering China is the largest foreign market, and it's still making tons of money elsewhere overseas, it's easily going to surpass $700 million total, and could conceivably get close to $800 million, maybe more if there's a significant Oscar push and it gets nominated for a bunch of them, which it has a good shot at doing. Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction, that's 10. It could easily get nominated for all of those and more (Best Original Score, even though it was one of Zimmer's weaker ones, maybe nominated Ellen Page or Joseph Gordon-Levitt because they're pretty much the only decent actors under the age of 30). Nolan deserves the love, the Academy should make it up to him for snubbing The Dark Knight.

It's been a weak year too, so who knows, it could actually win a bunch. I need to see it again.

Just saw it. Lohan was surprisingly good. Her bewbs were nice, too. Alba's nude scene was nicely refresging. Segals fit right in, no one else could act in this thing, either. but it wasn't about acting. Grindhouse movies are about grinding out a flick qith a low budget, and makiing a peofit. Any profit. It was a sucess, and will continue to be one. I'll pay full price at the cinema again to see it and will by the dvd. Johnson, Deniro were pedestrian, st best but Michelle stole the show. I'll be keeping an eye out for her in the future.
Maein was marin. It was good to see Cholo and the crazy babysitter twins again, as well as the doctor. When I saw the doctor, I knew everything would be OK.
He set up the next scene so sublininaly, it was...what's the word...?
Oh, yeh, sublime.

Machete was pretty good, but Jessica Alba's and Lindsay Lohan's acting was pretty bad in this one. The way Alba would pronounce Machete drove me crazy, couldn't Michelle Rodriguez teach Alba some basic Spanish pronunciation?

The part where Danny Trejo uses some guy's intestines as a rope was pretty funny.

How about the movie Champion then? Seeing as how it's a documentary about his life, he figures pretty prominently.

I had so much fun during Machete. Except for the two frat boys in front of me who would throw their arms in the air and whoop like apes whenever there would be boobs. And giggle loudly whenever anything SEXY happened.

Apart from that, though... a really fun, over-the-top gore and tit fest. Even Lohan was good in this movie, because acting wasn't the top priority in this movie.

Since they expanded the Best Picture field to 10 movies last year, Inception is almost guaranteed a Best Picture nomination, barring 10 Holocaust dramas being released this December.

enry: >Machete was all kinds of awesome.Come on man! Speak up. Yes, it was.

Saw it Friday afternoon. I thought it was a great movie. I was wonderfully entertained. But then I go to movies to be entertained, if I want thought provoking or some deep message, I will read a book.

was only 5 people in the theater tho, I was suprised. Bummer, but then school was still in session.

jackandwater: was only 5 people in the theater tho, I was suprised. Bummer, but then school was still in session.

Bummer? I usually only see movies in the theater if they've been out for a couple of weeks and I can make the latest showing possible. If you're lucky you get the theater to yourself, which is awesome.

I just got back from seeing "The American". As many have said in this thread, it's definitely not an action film. The countryside around the town he's in is more of a character than any of the people.

Oh.

Saw "Machete" yesterday and just enjoyed it for what it was -- a classic schlock film full of gratuitous violence and nudity. It was just fun -- don't think it was supposed to be anything other than that.

I saw Machete Friday night and it was a terrible waste of what could have been a really good movie. I like camp and fun as much as anyone, but this movie just seemed to drag forever, I looked at my watch at least three times in the second half hoping it would be over soon. It had a few good moments, but not nearly enough to justify the time and expense. My recommendation, if you want a good movie in this same type of over the top gore with a pulp feel, go watch the Kill Bill movies and skip Machete.

2010-09-05 09:46:30 PM
Loved Machete, but when it comes to cheesy over the top action, I enjoyed The Expendables more.

Will pay to see Machete Kills and Machete Kills Again.

I did notice that the theater I was in had a large amount of Mexicans in there too. Also these Mexicans replaced the usual black people as the loud obnoxious ones who wouldn't stop talking while the film was on. I guess this was a film for Mexican people though.

you're a dumbass. china is not one of the biggest markets for US films. Japan, UK, Spain, France, and Germany hold that honor. China's probably less important of a market than India.
