It's not just an eeny-meeny-miney-moe process as to what will pop out when any given sperm fertilizes any given egg. Basically, the egg is just chilling out when it's pelted with some X-sperm and some Y-sperm, and whichever one breaches the hull first gets its little spermy self formed into babby.

So I think the idea is that certain factors (like diet, timing, etc.) are better for either X-chromosome sperm or Y-chromosome sperm.

And that is my biology-hating, liberal-arts-majorey way of understanding it.

IIRC one of the sperms are bigger or something so there is a theory that filters could screen the sperm so only the Ys get through. maybe all that dairy thickens the mucosa, or the beef hormones kill the Y sperm...

I want to see the control group for this study. I'm cynical. It's the male that determines the sex of the baby, unless the female has developed a mutation that gives her control over her eggs, allowing them to only permit X vs. Y sperm to fertilize.

I'm thinking that the couples wanted a girl, so the male somehow produced more X sperm. Not sure what the mechanism of this is, but there you have it.

As far as I'm aware, that's kind of a simplistic view. These sperm have to travel a decently long way (well, long if you're a sperm), and there are pH levels and mucus and and all sorts of womanly ickyness to contend with. Perhaps some varieties of womanly ickiness are superior.

Not to mention when the sperm get there, they have to get through an egg; maybe this is just me knowing not very much about biology, but I don't see where it's that ludicrous to imagine that diet and habit could minutely change the chemical makeup of her body.

The sperm with the xx are larger, hardier, can survive longer. The xy are faster since they have less mass. The idea is that the closer to ovulation, the better the chances for the xy, but further away, the xx has the advantage. As for which food products, i'm guessing it changes the vaginal/cervical/uterine environment to be either thicker, thinner, different nutrient build up, different acidity. Either way, changing it to favor the tortoise or the hare. So yes, all other things being equal, it is 50-50, but the road travelled is contributory.

Sperm aren't able to fertilize an egg until they undergo capacitation, which occurs in the uterine tube. Perhaps something in the mother's diet could help preferentially capacitate X labeled sperm.

So I think it is a waste of money, but it's not bad science.

I always theorized that "healthier" women tended to have girls more often. My logic was that when you're poor or malnourished you would be more likely to have a laborer (male) as a child to help bring you up. The healthier would have girls because they could afford to do so.

Considering that only 80% of the test subjects had success, I'm wondering if they controlled for the father's diet during this setup. That might affect what sperm are produced.

Fun fact: A large majority of sperm released are never able to fertilize an egg. There are various theories about what function these other sperm may have, but no real consensus. In a few studies, they've seen "fertility rates" of sperm at as low as 1%.



As for gas/no gas, the type of bacteria that live in your gut can affect what byproducts are released when digesting human non-digestible material. Methane release (ie. farts) is actually a byproduct of microbial metabolism, not human digestion. If only they had invented a way to have non-methane producing probiotics for plant matter digestion.

In reality, we probably all know very little about how the study was conducted and what it hoped to accomplish or understand, thanks to the moronic simplification of science reporters.

Diet definitely effects the pH of bodily fluids. The same holds true with sperm. People in this thread are being ridiculous. The female gamete is always X, but the sperm is traveling uterine tubes. Sperm aren't able to penetrate the egg until they undergo capacitation, modification of the glycocalyx coating on the acrosome. Capacitation also clips the tail of the sperm making motility a little easier.

So anything that influences pH, the capacitation reaction, or the coronal and zona reactions could help in determining which sperm makes it.

All those conditions are established by the female, so saying "the sperm decides the babby" is a very simplistic view.

In my experience, you tell the husband you're in the "safe zone" of your cycle and he doesn't need to use the condom (since you hated the pill and quit using it 6 months prior). You later look at the calendar and say "Oh Fark Me!" and hope and pray you're okay.
