Look. Can we just get an "Appropriate" tag and bin the irony one?

Wow, they name streets around an airport after planes? Next they'll be naming streets around stadiums after players.

This.
It's in no way ironic that there would be a street named "cessna" near an airport and he wasn't flying a Cessna anyway. Even if he were, it still wouldn't be ironic.

Definition of IRONY
1: a pretense of ignorance and of willingness to learn from another assumed in order to make the other's false conceptions conspicuous by adroit questioning -called also Socratic irony

Well if people actually get it and start using it right, what then? Do we get after them about ending sentences with a preposition? Cuz that would give us a whole new batch of people to rip on.

The whole preposition thing really isn't an English rule, it's from Latin, perhaps? Prepositions work just fine in English at the end of the sentence.

I'm pretty sure subby nailed his incorrect use of the irony tag on purpose.

I find it ironic that a certain group of people who most claim to know what irony is find nothing at all to be irony. They'll go to all sorts of contortions to explain one interpretation of a situation that isn't ironic. I'm not referring to the large number in this thread who are just aiming for correct usage. Those people need to learn how to spot a troll.

Sounds a bit like the area around the Festspielhaus in Bayreuth. with streets called Meistersingerstrasse and Niebelungstrasse and the like.

I wonder if there's a Hindenberg Street around Lakehurst, NJ.

What was ironic is that this pilot had always been Mr. Play It Safe, afraid to fly. He packed his suitcase, and kissed his kids good bye. He'd waited his whole damn life to take that flight, and as the plane crashed down, he thought HOLY farkING shiat WE'RE ABOUT TO farkING CRASH

The whole "ending a sentence with a preposition is bad grammar" thing is only for strict 9th grade english comp teachers (yeah I'm looking at you, Mr. Atherton). There are some cases where it is incorrect, but not for what most people think. It's only for when they're unnecessary. Also, there's a difference in prepositions for what I'm talking about (grammar) and what you're talking about (language). None of this matters. What I say is irrelevant. But I try to have fun with it anyway. Interesting discussion is good, especially if it raises honest questions and valid debates. But correcting someone with a lengthy explanation and copy pasta is just kind of rude.

The plane crashed into the house of an old man who had won the lottery the day before.

It was ironic because the pilot was doing touch and go landings. As the result of his maneuvers he crashed, and that is the opposite of the normal or expected result. Thus this is an ironic situation.

/wouldn't be ironic if he had been doing touch and crash landings

Not trying to be the irony police, but it's not hard to remember that apt is the opposite of ironic. It does cheapen the meaning when opposites are used for the same concept.

Let's look back at the definition of irony, from the Compact Oxford English Dictionary:

a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often wryly amusing as a result

Does one expect planes to crash on streets (in general), or ones named after planes (in this specific case)? No.
Is it wryly amusing that it did? Yes.

Is it ironic? According to this definition - Yes.

/Suck it irony police.

WRONG. Planes do crash, and often when they do crash, they crash on streets. And most plane crashes occur near airports. And streets named after aviation-related terms are very common around airports. Just because you are retarded, doesn't mean most other people are too; the general "one" you used in your first question WOULD expect planes to crash on streets, and they do have the common sense to know that most plane crashes occur around airports.

A few years ago the local waste treatment plant caught fire and the cops had to evacuate everyone on Huge Flaming Pile of Crap street.
