...but lawmakers say the law is not too harsh because it protects children.

if I were an evil teenager, I'd collect the phone numbers/email accounts of every lawmaker who agreed with this statement, then get several friends together and send sexually explicit pics to those lawmakers.

hey - they support anything that 'protects children' right? i'm sure those lawmakers wouldn't mind doing time in prison for posession of child porn.

Sentence is to severe what editor is to retarded.

Why do I doubt that if the genders were reversed, people would be asking if the sentence was too severe for him?

They'd be crying, "B-b-b-ut if it were a woman, she wouldn't have gotten such a severe punishment!"
But because it's a chick, this will shortly turn into a quasi-molester thread.

She was accused of kissing a 16-year-old boy who was in residential treatment for behavioral issues in June 2008.

The real question is who would want to make out with a kid with behavioral issues?

It is a ridiculous punishment for a kiss. But I'm torn, because if it were a male people would be screaming that the punishment wasn't enough.

Damn skippy. If they aren't motivated enough to experiment with weed while still in high school, I'll be damned if we need them wasting time and resources in our nation's colleges.

Worked at a residential treatment center. The people who who there are usually crazy too. We had staff get fired a couple times a year for fooling around with the students. It happens.

2010-09-04 02:26:48 PM
Huh. Just a kiss? Tack on some extra time for not putting out. That will teach them gals to not be teasing dudes.

2010-09-04 02:27:08 PM
I think the sentence was too severe, and I'd say that if she were a man, especially because the article claims the teen initiated it, and it did not progress physically beyond that kiss.

However, she isn't just some random individual, she is a youth counselor, so that's pretty bad. And then she wanted to pursue the relationship afterwards, and that's pretty awful too.

She should be fired for sure, but the real problem is these horribly stupid sex offender registries that are just way to easy to be put on, and almost impossible to be taken off, and the draconian laws that are written around them concerning employment, living, stuff like that.

We need to stop governing by brutal punishment alone.

The 16 year old kissed HER. He started it. This is crazy.

Well, she did want to go further as she indicated in her emails, but the simple fact is that HE kissed her.

Looked up Four Oaks where she worked- there are some fragile, damaged kids at that facility- appears to be a full locked down psych unit for kids 12-18. The 16 year old had serious issues to be there. Yeah, he kissed her. That is when you report what happened, get transferred to another unit and address what happened as part of the kid's treatment. (And take a look at your own professional behavior)

She was whacked enough to seek a relationship with the kid after the kiss. He wasn't your average 16 year old- he was a mental health inpatient.

Punishment fits the crime.

Farkette who thinks people are a little predator happy but this isn't one of those times.

uhhh, okay. I'm getting a kick out of these replies, but I can't tell you why. She also went to the school and waited for him in the parking lot. It wasn't just one kiss, it was several, initiated by both parties. She pursued him, which is why the punishment fits the crime.

The difference between teenagers and legal adults is simply legislation.

Most of the adult population has "behavioral issues".

While men are, indeed, advised to not "stick their dick in crazy", the reason the advise exists is because usually crazy chicks are often awesome in bed.

I imagine it's the same thing in the case of men.

The main issue here is the abuse of trust in that he was more or less her patient.

If all male teachers having sex with teenage students were this reasonably punished, we'd all be better off. But in the US we're all "protect women against themselves" and "we still sorta kinda think sex is bad so we write statutory laws that are excessively punitive when factually consensual sex occurs"... so that'll never happen.

Who exactly are the "critics" in question? Couldn't the author of TFA get a single person or organization to put their name on the alleged sentiment?

I think she got off easy (no pun intended). Her actions were a gross violation of trust and a breach of processional ethics. She is exactly the sort of person who should be on the sex offender list so that no other "helping" organization hires her as a counselor.

/For the record she is creepy too
//In her case, she is both creepy and breaking the law (unlike a 58 year old ogling a 12 year old "woman"; the later is just creepy and loitering)

2010-09-04 03:29:28 PM
The issue here is not that she's a woman, but that it was only a kiss and he initiated it. It did not go beyond that, nothing really illegal happened. So should she be fired? Yes. Should this be a legal issue? No.

But...you...just...said...you...worked...there...

You're condemning yourself by association (assuming "the people who who there" is to be read as "the people who work there").

/Just sayin'
