If I had a million dollars I'd move back to Maine instead of the hell hole of an area that is the Baltimore/DC Metro area.

I think there's a chance that money was made through illegal activity.

So moving more than $10,000 of YOUR OWN MONEY is illegal? Oh, wait, it's to protect us from terrorists / drug dealers / child molesters / file sharers / litterers. Yeah, I remember back when I lived in a free country ...

Surprisingly, Maine is *still* part of the United States.

Not illegal to move large amounts of money WITH declaration to the IRS.

You're not even supposed to possess 10,000$ or more without documentation of its origin. The policy reason for it is to prevent money laundering.

If it's the same estimators that tally the "drug bust street value", it's probably going to end up being about $1,678.

What if it was legitimately his money? Is it still smuggling?

Lewiston is in the south of Maine, nowhere near a Canadian border, so I don't see what was illeagal about this. If I want to drive around with my money, what's the problem?

Ya, they sort of wisened up to how slow it is to smuggle fistfuls of dollar bills

Yup. I mean, at some point, I'm going to take my savings, and move back to the States. And I'm going to have to do a bank transfer, and eat the cost of that, because I cant just stick the cash in my pants and fly home.

I love living in Maine. If I were ever to get a million, the state would be around $600,000 richer. You know, the most taxed state in the union. That was what was meant by the headline.

I have not. Do they give you some sort of receipt if you win more than 10,000? The government may not be so strict there. However, they probably could still take your money. They can't arrest you, but they can take it. They do it all the time.

No, they don't give you a receipt if you win more than 10K. And many people walk around with hundreds of thousands on them.

I love how the government gets around the whole "innocent until proven guilty" thing by filing a civil action against the money as in "United States vs. $1,000,000 Cash" now someone has to go to court and "defend" the money to prove it wasn't earned illegally. It's 99% likely this was dope money but I don't like that the government can seize your money until you prove you came by it legally. Thugs.

THIS.

Wait til the banks start failing en masse, and FDIC runs out of money because the current idiots in congress have been pissing away money in unprecendented amounts.

THEN, a barter economy will emerge, and people WILL KILL police that try to take their valuables (gold, ammo, booze, etc.) and then there will be legislation to stop police confiscations, if only to prevent a general uprising that will result in politicians hanging from lamp posts....

/I can dream, can't I?

I've been to Maine. There is absolutely NOTHING there. Every billboard advertised Lotto and alcohol stores, there were plenty of signs for Moose Crossings. At 5:00pm, their rush hour had 4 cars on the road. I only saw gas stations while there. The place still haunts me.

Actually a few more miles, and they'd have crossed the BOARDER into NH.

I've driven trucks and have been through that particular truck station a few times, one while driving for a butcher shop (was returning empty after completeing my deliveries to York, Wells, and South Portland) and a couple of times while driving for a HVAC supply company.

Another Mainer here.. if I had a million dollars.. I still wouldn't move... well maybe northern NH. I've lived other places.. couldn't wait to get back here.

The money law you all are whining about is federal not state. And it's older than most of you. I believe it was part of the Regan's administrations 'War on Drugs' before the 'War on Terror' ever started. If you are dealing in large amounts of cash.. you better be able to prove you earned it legally.

So.. just for the heck of it.. lets say these guys 'earned' every cent picking strawberries. Why would you buy/rent/hire a truck that costs thousands of dollars to move said money instead of just putting it into the bank and taking it out when you got to Canada which you can do for free? To avoid paying taxes... which the IRS frowns on...

Never been there but I always imagined Maine as a beautiful place - sure, I'm guessing the snow could present some serious issues for 6 months out of the year but when you're not swatting away the mosquitoes in the summer I'm sure the scenery is awe inspiring.

Yea, they do. A W2-G. The IRS knows about any winnings before you get it loaded into your car. If you carry very large sums, even with a W2-G in hand, mind your speed and use the turn signal every once in a while. You'll still lose it, at least temporarily, if you get stopped. Also, if you take home 6 figures or better and elect to take it in cash, use the VIP bay when you leave. The stewards will quietly show you where to go. It's a long highway from Vegas to LA.
