Well, Duante Culpepper got hurt before the regular season started, so that's probably not what's going to happen.

Given how secretive coach Mike Tomlin was in refusing to announce a starter for any preseason game, it isn't certain when he'll disclose his starting quarterback. The Steelers don't practice again until Monday.

But let's be honest; it's not Charlie Batch.

/I didn't even know Charlie Batch was still in the NFL

If the problem is injuries we might as well play him until he injures himself.

Reason being, while Dennis Dixon may develop into a passable backup quarterback, he'll still always be a backup quarterback on the Steelers. (you know barring more ill advised rapeology during the offseason by Ben.)

Its not like we're actually training Dixon to be the starter here, as long as Batch isn't injured he's simply better at the job overall.

Well judging by bens penchant for being a grade A moron, they may very well be seeing if they can find a serviceable QB then trade dumb rapelisburger.

And you won four with Terry Bradshaw, and two with Ben Roethlisberger. Let me put it to you as gently as I'm able - you'd have better luck trotting Bradshaw out there for your opening game.

I'm amazed the Fark football experts were able to so easily determine the outcome of this kid's career based on 1 NFL game worth of evidence.

Why waste your time on Fark? I'm sure NFL teams would pay handsomely for your ability to determine the potential of an NFL QB, submitard.

Other than a couple bad plays I like what I saw out of the kid and I'm excited to see some more of him. bring on the season! If we lose soem games, we lose some games. But I bet it will still be fun.

Uh this is far from terrible. Dixon will be alright and Ben is back by week five. There are other teams with much more precarious QB situations. See Denver, Seattle etc

Well, at least with Dixon playing you'll be the second best team in the country before he gets injured too!

Bah! The team will get by. The 6 time Super Bowl winning Pittsburgh Steelers are more than just a quarterback. They'll be alright.

Batch looked really good every time he started/filled in for the Steelers, but being that guy paying your dues doesn't seem to mean much.

the Tony Banks era

I met Tony (getting a kick, etc.) when he came to play with the kids at The Boys and Girls Club for the evening in Lansing. Nice guy!

He shook my hand, and I couldn't get over how huge his hands were. Probably the norm for athletes of that caliber, though.

Let's see... in Dixon's first NFL start last season, he took on the best defense in the league and managed to put up good numbers and nearly won the game on offense- making only one mistake (tossing that INT) that cost the Steelers the game.

For a rookie, that's not exactly a failure. Yes, this means the Steelers will need to whittle down their playbook some, but that's not a bad thing. If nothing else, I think it'll mean less of the patented Bruce Arians, "3rd and 1? Obvious passing down!" strategy.

NFL suspension policy:

-Do all the steroids you'd like - we won't check and we encourage it
-Kill a man and get convicted of said crime = 1 game suspension
-Be ACCUSED (not even charged, let alone convicted) of a crime = 4-6 game suspension

All either has to do is not lose the games for the Steelers. I'm optimistic that the defense will be back to form this year with Troy and Aaron Smith healthy again. As long as Dixon or Batch doesn't turn the ball over 4 times per game, and if special teams can hold the opponents to only 2 or 3 return TDs in September, then I think 2-2 is realistic. And hopefully one of those wins will be against Baltimore in week 4 because I have tickets to that one.

Compared to Pat White, Dixon is Joe Montana.

/damn Dolphins thinking they could pick up a turd from the clean end

Actually the talk around here is that Batch has the edge over Dixon because he's experienced and won't take the risks that Dixon would. Like I said above, the Steelers need a qb that won't lose the game for them....kinda like when Ben took over in week 2 of his rookie year. Safe quarterbacking, a dominant defense and a strong running game led to 15 wins in a row that year.

2010-09-04 12:04:52 PM
The tribune review here in pittsburgh (Ridiculously nutty right-wing newspaper, but has great sports section) has been all but declaring that Dixon will take over.

The post-gazette (a moderate to liberal newspaper with a half-decent sports section) has been all but declaring that Batch will be the starter.

Both have been pretty firm on their assessments.

/Dixon has talent, but he's not ready to be a starter.

Batch has done really well filling in for Roethlisberger, except for whole getting injured thing which he does really well. I wouldn't at all be surprised to see Tomlin talk up Dixon ad then start Batch. I've been saying it since the first preseason game, only half joking.
