um, break the window? how does a taxi driver have the magic touch that frees a baby from a car? Do taxi drivers just all know how to pick locks or something?

I like it. Cabbies are apparently just as good as a cop or a locksmith in this instance, whodathunkit

Not a hell of a lot of rocks in a parking garage.

serial_crusher: um, break the window? how does a taxi driver have the magic touch that frees a baby from a car? Do taxi drivers just all know how to pick locks or something?

When I read the article, I thought maybe there was some confusion at the cop shop, and they just thought the woman locked the keys in her car, and that she should call a taxi to get where she needed to go.

Then it said this: "she flagged down two passersby who found her a cabbie, who finally freed the exhausted child."

So apparently when the cops told her to get a cabbie to fix her problem, she took the suggestion seriously, and was determined to get a cabbie - even by soliciting the help of two passersby to help her get a cabbie.

Then to top it all off, the cabbie actually gets the baby out!

WTF man?

May not be a good idea to have flying shards of broken glass falling around a baby. Depending on where that baby was there may have been no way to avoid cutting it. That'd be the last desperate move to make.

This is what socialized law enforcement will get you. Also, I doubt the doors locked by themselves.

If only cars had some kind of glass panel surrounding the passenger cabin which you could break in order to get inside in extreme circumstances like these. We should write to all the auto manufacturers to get them to include this vital safety feature!

Cabbies usually care slim-jims (not the food) in there trunk. It's pretty common to ask them to unlock your car.

Still, for the police to do nothing is pretty appalling.

Don't waste your time with the police. Call the fire department. They will come. They will happily (and safely, these guys are good) break a window and free babby. They love to break shiat and save babbies, those fireguys do.

Happened to a friend of mine while I was with her. The fire dept. was great, and insurance paid for the broken window.

I agree she should have broken the window, but what about the "safety" feature of doors that auto-lock after a pre-set time? They should maybe not include that safety feature. My car has it and it locked me out once (at home, near the spare keys).

If she really thought her baby was in danger she would have broken a window and gotten in the car.

Yes, the shards could have hit the baby, but if he dies of heat stroke, I'm sure it will comfort him to know he didn't get a minor cut.

Plus, the baby was likely in the back seat, since that is where he is supposed to be. So, break one of the front windows on the opposite side of the car and likely no glass will even reach him.

So find a rock and break the damn window if you are really worried about your baby and not trying to be an attention whore that wants to blaim your problems and lack of common sense on the police. Can't find a rock in a parking garage, no problem, get someone to give you a tire iron, there are probbably plenty of those around in a parking garage and they break glass real good.

At least where I am, taxi drivers all carry shims to open locked vehicles. Ostensibly it's just in case they lock themselves out, but I've definitely heard of people calling a taxi to unlock their car.

When you break car glass shards go EVERYWHERE. I've broken enough to know. With the window covered by thick plastic and popping it with a sledge through the rubber I've STILL ended up covered in cuts. They can get deep, and they can lodge themselves in your clothes for additional DOT.

Have you ever been in a car before? A lot of them have automatic locks that lock at random for no reason.

Your child is stuck in a car; not enough time has pass for heat exhaustion to kick in so you still have some time. Do you, A) call 911 for fire fighters to professionally break down your car window without injuring the baby, along with paramedics to make sure your kid is ok, or B) start swinging shiat like crazy?

The key concept you are looking for here is "Rationality".

Which is why you don't break the one next to the kid. That is, if you HAVE to break a window.

I know how this feels. I was cleaning out the back seat of my car that has those dang child safety locks that only let the door open from the outside. The door shut and I had to call the cops for help. They wouldn't help me either and even called me an idiot! Finally, I had to kick the window out. I almost died!

She should have offered to let the police taze the baby afterward. That would have done the trick.

True. Every single EMT/Fire(wo)man I've ever met/known has been A+ material... they know their stuff, have fantastic work ethics, great energy and would give you the shirt of their backs.
