Godammitsomuch. The reason Butch Davis was hired was because he won at Miami while cleaning up Erickson's violations.

NC-VA is known mostly for interest in college basketball, but there is still a certain level of interest in college football. Not in a national sense, because I honestly don't think anyone who roots for an ACC team (newcomers excepted) that thinks we can or necessarily should try and compete with the SEC or Big 10 on a national level. It's important to do well in the conference and go to a good bowl (even if the Gator Bowl has bolted for bigger paydays and Chik-Fil-A has the unmitigated gall to drop the "Peach" from Peach Bowl).

You... you are unfamiliar with Butch Davis' track record, yes? This was predestined, it comes with the package, kind of like hiring Lane Kiffin or Bobby Petrino.

When the coaches nanny is "tutoring" the players and they all start getting great grades and turning in papers not really in their own literary style, something just might be amiss.

They think just because he didnt get caught that hes a clean coach, butch was notorious for letting agents around to show players what they could end up with. He is the reason for a lot of new rules by the NCAA since he disguised a lot of perks while coaching.

That would be funny if the tar heels got huge penalties without ever really winning.

At what point do Americans acknowledge that the college football system is fundamentally broken?

The pretense that these people are "student athletes" is a century out of date, and the ever-more elaborate rules and policing should make it clear that it's time for a rethink.

It's unfair to the less than 1% whose goal is to prepare for a run at the NFL to force them to sustain a veneer of "academic eligibility"; it's unfair to the more than 99% who would simply like to participate in inter-school sports to require them to play with and against full-time athletes; and I have no idea what somebody who is a gifted football player but has no academic skills is supposed to do. The NCAA and colleges have built themselves a system that practically guarantees that violations will be endemic, then act shocked! when they encounter them.

Unfortunately, college football has become too important, financially and otherwise, to the schools, and the pot of gold for players that get drafted too rich, to be able go back to the "old days" of true students. It's time to acknowledge the reality that these guys are professionals-in-waiting, and to structure a realistic system around that fact.

"liquor sales soar in Chapel Hill, NC"

They are soaring here in Louisiana also, baby!!! Can't friggin wait for this game. My impression is that LSU is putting it back together this year and has a great shot at competing for the national championship (if they can get through their brutal schedule).

One thing about this game. North Carolina was loaded with NFL talent when LSU agreed to the scheduling last year. You still have to give credit to LSU (and UNC) for scheduling a tough out of conference opponent on week one.

Personally I think UNC's second string is still probably pretty darn good. This will still be a tougher game than the game one opponents for Alabama and Florida, who play Our lady of the Little Sisters of the Poor, and its related college, South Nowhere Community College.

Visited Chapel Hill for the first time this summer (wedding), and boy did I like UNC's Disc Golf course! Cute as a button. And I love how sweetgum trees grow wild down there.

LT received improper benefits as well, and he documented it in his book. Charlie "Choo Choo" Justice was well payed while at UNC. Wayne Ellington's father "just happened" to be living in a $400,000 house that "just happened" to be owned by a major booster. Now, their athletes "just happened" to have their homework done by someone who "just happened" to be the head coach's nanny.

It's not like this hasn't been going on for a long, long time at UNC. They have, however, been quite successful at perpetuating the myth that their athletics program is somehow more clean than everyone else. I hope they start looking at the basketball program.

Yeah, no. LSU still sucks. Even with 12, 12!, UNC, UNC for fark's sake, players suspended the line is only around 7 for LSU.

It doesn't matter, though. The voters will punish LSU for this game, as it wasn't the "real" UNC, while at the same time rewarding Bama and Florida for crushing Nobody Tech.

Note that I'm not criticising Bama (for once), as they did schedule a real team in Penn State, this is a patented BCS-voters-suck rant.

Unfortunately this is probably true. If LSU played Ball State they would move up five places for a medium win. But if LSU crushes UNC, which is still a good team without the suspended players, they get no love. LSU scheduled OOC games against Morth Carolina and West Virginia this year. At least they are not ducking competition.

CSB time.

Back in 2006, UNC played at Notre Dame -- while Weis was playing with Willingham's players still, Quinn at QB, so ND was good and UNC was still "Oh, they have a football team? Huh!" -- the following exchange was heard outside the stadium before kickoff:

ND Fan -- "Hey, UNC guy! Your team sucks!"
UNC Fan -- "Yes! We know!"

I predict most people won't care about football, but just remind themselves how much longer till basketball season -- then start drinking because of that.

They were over rated to begin with. Although maybe good enough in the ACC

More than 1% of us who sought degrees in other fields took many courses that did not seem to contribute towards the degree (in our view at the time). Being well rounded individuals benefits everyone, especially those who might end their career all in one major injury.
