Sounds about right. The last time I found Jay funny was when he was a regular guest on the old Late Night with David Letterman show.

What you said, but when he was on Carson.

Conan was just another generic late night comedian until hipsters adopted him as their own.

2010-09-03 05:22:58 PM
Part of what killed Conan's Tonight Show ratings were people changing the channel to avoid the Jay Leno Show, and leaving it somewhere else until they went to bed. Now that Leno's not in the primetime slot, he's not driving people away from his post-news timeslot. What would be very interesting to see is the 10 p.m. slot's faring since The Jay Leno Show stopped, and how local 11 p.m. NBC news programs have done in ratings since then.

I am clearly not a hipster, because I never saw the appeal of St. Conan "Big Head" O'Brien, or his puffy hair.

/Don't much care for Leno or Letterman, either.

2) shiat all over said thread, telling us all how you don't care about/don't know about/don't like said fan favorite.

3) Masturbate furiously over false sense of superiority/over how you sure did show us/over whatever enjoyment you get out of thread-shiatting.

Did I basically sum up the usual Conan/Whedon thread?

10/10.

Leno may basically suck but at least he is smart enough to know that putting people in bear suits and then having them pretend to masturbate is crass, not funny.

And the fact that so many vocal Farkers think that a person in a bear suit pretending to masturbate is funny makes me wonder just how farked up they are and whether they were sexually abused as children.

And yeah, I'm serious.

Neither are funny.

Leno is less humorous, especially after browsing fark all day, and compared to The Daily Show.

Conan is technically funnier than Leno, but his person and humor are simply obnoxious.

Between the two, I find Leno to be a better entertainer, but not comedian.

Leno should have been the better man, stepped down and let Conan have his show, regardless of what NBC wanted. Leno then should have then used his and NBCs power to get the rights to American Top Gear - because Leno at least knows cars, has a vested history in entertainment, and has been on Top Gear before. Instead, we got three morons on the History channel re-enacting their Dukes of Hazard fantasies.

Dude? So are you because you're sucking up all the fun in here.

Dumb humor can be good but Conan's smugness about his talent is just unjustified.

The fact that you think that a person in a bear suit pretending to masturbate is funny tells the rest of us all we need to know about you.

Why do you - and Conan - find making idiotic jokes about sex the height of humor? You're like a couple of junior high boys getting off looking at the lingerie section of a Sears catalog.

If Leno's ratings are down 22% in the 18-49 demographic, then there's really no argument. 18-49 year olds are by far the most important to tv advertisers on prime time network shows. In many cases, total viewers don't really matter if the 18-49 demographic is bad.

I will treat you as serious: The Masturbating Bear started out as a shock joke. The first time you saw it, you laughed just because it was completely crass and unexpected. It STAYED funny, simply because it was a running gag. Granted, it wouldn't have been funny if you just heard about it or saw it out of context and without seeing the first appearance.

It was basically fan service, an in joke for the people who had been watching it for years.

Not saying it's high brow or anything. But it was one of those things you giggled at without being able to explain to anyone else why you giggled at it.

I wasn't a fan of the bear myself but to complain a bout how 'crass' a bit that took up 15 seconds of a show every once in a while was is stupid. Masturbating bear sucks for a few seconds, Leno sucks for 60 minutes.

The big trouble that no one mentions, least of all the networks, is that their Raison d'être is gone. And it's been gone for a few decades now. Back when TV stations still went off the air these shows were it if you wanted to watch something on the 5 stations that you got. The networks knew this and did their best to get their chunk of that magic demographic.

Today is very different, though. People have much more choice than they once had. Several hundred stations to choose from instead of only a handful, video libraries, services such as Netflix, and a whole host of options on the internet. Instead of just ABC, NBC, CBS, and some Spanish UHF station that sometimes comes in, you can spend the entire evening on Youtube watching stupid cat videos.

Not only are their ratings against each other falling, but their overall combined ratings are falling drastically as more "other" options pop up. Back in the world that had no internet, no DVD or VCR, and no cable TV, the networks were golden. Unfortunately they have failed to change with the times. As a result, that magic demographic is finding something to do other than watch their crud.

Their model is failing fast and they will quickly become irrelevant if they don't change soon. If it isn't too late already.

/or you could spend the evening at redtube
//and watch another type of stupid cat videos

Why can't I like Dave, Conan, Jay, and Craig? Life is not a zero sum game, and I have a dual tuner DVR. They all have there own vibe, are are entertaining enough to a large enough audience. Times change, TV audiences are fragmented, and it is not necessarily a bad thing.

There was no God given mandate that thou shalt have 3 channels, and the count of the channels shall remain 3.

//Dennis Miller and Magic Johnson still suck as late night hosts.

Nope. They had to do something when they decided Jay's earlier show wouldn't work. The affiliates were losing money on their newscasts because Jay was running off their audience. NBC was also losing ad revenue for themselves in that time slot.

They were in to Jay for a fortune so they were going to have to move him somewhere. The move was not because the show makes more with Jay. It doesn't. Ad dollars are not spent based on total viewers but on key demographics, and Conan beats Leno in those demographics handily. But the reduced ad revenue plus the Conan buyout was less than the money they would have paid Jay to not be on TV plus Conan's salary.

It was never about Conan's ratings.

They can lose a lot of viewers and still make a lot of money with late night talk shows. TV production doesn't get much cheaper than a guy talking to a camera in a studio and interviewing guests who are paid next to nothing by the talk show because most of them are being paid by someone else to promote something. The format is viable as long as free, advertiser-supported television is viable.

On a side note, I'm wondering when local news will be gone. With more and more people going to the internet for news (including web sites for local TV stations) eventually people like my parents (Dad is 88, Mom is 87...wow, looks strange to read that in print, 'cos they don't seem that old)) will be gone. Who's gonna watch the 6 o'clock news then?

Considering the pile of money they had to give Conan just so they wouldn't have to give an even bigger pile to Jay, I wouldn't say that these shows are as cheap as you make them sound. All things considered though, NBC has been royally farking themselves for quite a number of years. This was just icing on the shiat sammich they're eating.
