Hmm... 747s don't easily crash. The article has next to zero information, but for a 747 to go down in the desert, I'm thinking either a maintenance or load shift issue, possibly a cabin fire.

Took off, turned around and came back...full of fuel...ouch.

I know I'm old, little behind this whole tech thing. Don't 747's usually have 3 or 4 crew members?

2010-09-03 07:23:50 PM
Sounds like they had a cockpit fire after takeoff. Lost all cockpit visibility in the thick smoke and couldn't see outside or their instruments. Went into the ground but fought it all the way down.

Stuff like this gives pilots nightmares.

Gee, guess what? Sometimes planes crash.

What a non-story.

Sad for the pilots' families, though.

Newer versions, I think starting with the -400, only require two pilots. A flight to Koln must be short enough to only require 2 and not require a 3rd for inflight rest.

The premise behind this site is non-newsworthy stories that are given "Breaking News" or "Headline News" status no matter how weak, or commonplace, or "DUH" they might be.

We all know airplanes may crash every once in awhile, it's an inherited risk. Hence why this being a headline story, and being greenlit in and of itself is farkable.

Actually cargo carriers tend to be exempt from this rule. I had a buddy who's father was a FedEx jockey in A300's, and typically what would happen is that on long stuff like that, there may be 3 pilots, but in the event of there being two they would alternate sleeping while enroute. Don't quote me on it though, there's a lot of stuff pilots do that the FAA doesn't want, need, or have to know about.

Yep.

The only time I've ever felt my heart race in the Sim was when I did smoke in the cockpit training for the first time.

We're cool with not being able to see outside.

We're not cool with not being able to see at all.

From the middle of the article:

"In October 2009, a Sudanese Boeing 707 cargo plane crashed in the desert outside Dubai after taking off from Sharjah airport north of Dubai, killing six crew members. Emirati regulators have banned the plane's Sudanese owner, Azza Transport, from operating in the country."

What does that have to do with the rest of the story, other than the words cargo and Dubai?

They are not exempt. Even if they sleep enroute (still frowned upon by FAA), it doesn't get them around the flight hours in 24 hour requirement. It just means they're tired.

It could have implications for UPS' ability to operate in the UAE.

I believe this is the first UPS plane to actually fall out of sky. I work on the ramp loading UPS planes. I'm sure this will cause us to have to go through twenty extra stupid proceedures just because somebody in Dubai farked up. Ugh. Those 747-400 are all pretty new too. Wierd. Now the old ones we have are POSs. One came to Phoenix last year and almost nothing worked. We unloaded it and sent it to Roswell to get scrapped.

I'm dreading the implications of this.
