Is it okay to panic now?

From TFA: "The official told The Associated Press that no charges were filed against the 70-year-old man"

So, no, subby, it is not.

I wonder if the TSA monkey opened the tube to see if there was any water in it.

Uh, you dont really need to smuggle plague in, it is sorta everywhere. Ever seen any animals in the western us? They are known carriers.

Link (new window)

Go to a state park west of the rockies, you will see the signs:
Link (new window)

hell, even prairie dogs carry it, so the midwest isnt safe either...

Doesnt matter anyway, as its easy to treat, with low (for a biological weapon) mortality rates

The TSA with holds a lot of things in the interest of the public's sense of security. We never heard about most of the stuff they do catch. I am not surprised they downplayed this as well. However, it is still not okay to panic. People do enough stupid things when they feel comfortable.

WHAT WAS WITH ALL THAT YELLING IN THE BEGINNING OF TFA?

And I wish to know why he was smuggling plague. Was it for research, and he was simply skirting red tape, or did he intend to kill a whole bunch of people?

Now why would that impact the current story at all?

If you like.

A lot more has to happen for a plague outbreak--much less a pandemic--to occur than a few test-tubes full of plague bacilli being released someplace. Plague is endemic up at Lake Tahoe already, a couple people up there get it every year when kitty brings home some dead ground squirrel.

But if you want to panic over the whole BUBONIC PLAGUE idea, and it makes you feel better, go right ahead.

Bubonic Plague gets its name from the word "bubo," which is the archaic term for a swollen gland or node. The victim would have massively swollen bubos, hence the name bubonic.

The modern term "boo-boo" (as in, "Mommy, I got a boo-boo!") is actually the same word.

Question of the day: Are "boobies" also derived from the same word? As in, "Look at the massively swollen glands on her!" And if so, can we say she is "bubonic?"

No, subby, it is not okay to panic, the article says "charged", not "convicted", so the "bubonic plague" thing was just hyped up bullshiat to scare the public, just like these "pipe bombs" are.

Also, when it's cold outside, is it nippy out because she's nipping out? Or because you need a nip from the flask to warm up?

No they don't.

The TSA only withholds how many lighters and bottles of water they impound. Anytime there is even the slightest hint that they might be dealing with a real threat they're all over the press, just like now and just like a few days ago when a couple of scary looking foreigners changed their flights.

That's pretty much irrelevant. They already have the publics attention when they mention pipe bombs, Saudi Arabia and bubonic plague in one sentence, 90% of the intended audience won't care about the "no charges" and "no public threat".

modern boubonic plague is not the dreaded disease of the middle ages that spread like wildfire and killed 1/3rd of Europes population.
that being said, unless the plague the person brought into the US was in a weaponized aresol form, it would have to be directly injected into each victem, as modern plague is not a resparatory spread issue as the medieval plague was. Doctors treating plague victims in India during the 20th C's last major pre-antibiotic outbreak had a less than 1% infection rate, all other infections could be traced to the rat fleas, Cheopsys. the flea will move from a dead rat to a live rat in prefrence, and to other mamals if the rodents are not availible. The flea needs a temperature of at least 78 degrees and a humidity of more than 80% to survive more than 24 hours without a host. Stay away from dead rodents. Do not keep rodents as pets. If you see a rodent of any sort come out of it's burrow and wander around erratically, stay away until it has been dead for at least 72 hours. If bit by a mamal in a plague area, seek immediate medical treatment, as it is rare suggest checking for plague.

Indeed, they shouldn't have misidentified the pipe bombs, and there is absolutely no reason at all for them to state that the reason they failed today is because they farked up 7 years ago as well. It all makes it sound like they're harassing the man instead of doing their job.

Expecting LE not to make an error is not reasonable at all, especially when canisters like these resemble their absolute worst nightmare. And it wasn't TSA who'd farked up seven years ago, it was FBI.
Sorry, but that kind of thing is going to take time to sort out - which they did.
