Too deep they delved there, and woke the nameless fear.

Volcanoes and seismic activities. Think the earth is trying to shake her fleas? Maybe BP did rupture something critical.

The Earth just seems pissed off. Maybe its all these damn hippies that won't stop treating her as a fragile little flower. The Earth is damn tough.

7.2 Earthquake hits Christchurch, once again proves that God hates Christ, church.

^was a much better headline than an extremely obvious LoTR reference.

Is this where I'm supposed to biatch about a different headline being chosen? Do I have to complain even if I don't care?

//I went with Something Something Middle Earthquake...

It was at least an RBI single vs. a ground-out to second.

I was JUST going online to buy my honeymoon tickets to Christchurch. ARGH. May be prudent to fly out of a different town on the South Island. Any New Zealanders not currently buried under rubble should advise. After all, these are my travel plans at stake. Your problems pale in comparison.

This is the big one! You hear that, Elizabeth? I'm coming to join ya!

you can search far an wide
you can drink the whole town dry
but you'll never find a beer so brown
but you'll never find a beer so brown
as the one we drink in our home town
as the one we drink in our home town
you can drink your fancy ales
you can drink em by the flagon
but the only brew for the brave and true...

when is the trip? 7.2 is pretty friggen bad. I would suggest going elsewhere. new south wales perhaps.

2010-09-03 03:17:21 PM
well at least it hit Christchurch and not Mohammedmosque or Mosessynagoge.

well, to be fair, new zealand is a large place. Going at the end of October. Already have nonrefundable flights to Auckland, was planning to fly from there down to queenstown, then do a drive through the south island and end up in christchurch. argh. maybe we'll have to make it a loop back to queenstown. earthquakes are total assholes.

it won't be a total warzone at that time, but it probably won't be all that great either.

One cannot simply quake into mordor

2010-09-03 03:39:03 PM
Man I am glad I shifted out of the bottom floor of an old falling down flat I use to live in on Armagh street, was always telling people I would hate to be in here during a earthquake.

2010-09-03 03:46:20 PM
Isn't that what happened to Old Zealand as well?

2010-09-03 03:52:57 PM
I live 400 km south from the epicentre. No damage at my place, but everything is off the shelves/walls at my girlfriend's Mom's house, about 40 km from Christchurch.

There are a lot of really old (dilapidated) buildings in NZ, and it sounds like a lot of them fell over in Christchurch.

Most of the flights from the south and east sides of the south island go through Christchurch. You might try to fly out of Nelson (through Wellington) back to Auckland. Finding a rental car that will allow pickup in Queenstown and drop-off in Nelson could be tricky.

Quake just downgraded to 7.1; hit us at 4:35 AM which is a damn good thing as there were lots of falling bricks in the CBD. Heaps of old buildings here.

Power out to most of Chch (we're lucky here in Linwood). Water and sewer down, could be a couple of days before back to normal. Minor cell service disruptions, landlines still fine.

BBC has it at 7.0 -- not quite as bad. No casualties reported but a fair amount of damage, particularly to older buildings.

2010-09-03 06:01:13 PM
Hope everyone is okay. That's a pretty big quake. My sister and brother-in-law use to live in Christchurch but now they are near Nelson.

Picture 2 and 7 are pretty bad. Glad no one was in the cars at the time. It's funny I usually feel pretty safe in a car.
