Brilliant idea, Mr. Small-government Conservative.

2010-09-02 11:43:34 PM
Well, if they want to do that, it's not a big deal. It's not like they're rebuilding the WTC or anything anyway. I don't see how that would affect the building of the community center, though, since it isn't on Ground Zero. :-/

Newt's only saving grace is that (to the right) he appears sincere.

I don't think anyone has considered him "sane" since he slithered from whatever rock he's been hiding under to hop on the tea party bandwagon.

And "intellectual".

Pat Buchanan got it exactly right: Newt wants to steal the limelight from Sarah Palin. And the only way to do that is to out-crazy Queen Derp.

And that would change nothing.... since this mosque or whatever it is, is a few blocks away.

I think Obama should declare love to be a national battlefield.

When the isolationist anti-Semite sounds like the sane voice of your party, maybe it's time to dial back the rhetoric.

I would like to personally invite everyone biatching about the "Ground Zero mosque" to kindly STFU and GBTW.

2010-09-03 12:05:34 AM
He doesn't care about being a hypocrite: After Marianne questioned how he could give a speech on family values while carrying on an affair with his decades-younger aide (who became his third wife), Newt replied, "It doesn't matter what I do. People need to hear what I have to say. There's no one else who can say what I can say. It doesn't matter what I live."

Yeah, they'd have to designate the "battlefield" as two blocks out in every direction from the borders of WTC plaza.

What the hell are they going to do? Declare "eminent domain" and bulldoze half the buildings in Lower Manhattan?

What's so insane about declaring it a national battlefield? You libs are too quick to judge the esteemed former speakerof the house - The White House was a national battlefield when it was burned by the British in 1814 and today we have no mosques even remotely close.

Besides why do you always have to nitpick us, its not like it will cost millions of dollars of taxpayer money to make it a national battlefield.

How can you say that when the Sekret Mooslim got elected inside anyway?

It's actually been quiet for a few days. Maybe the outrage echo chamber burned itself out too early. Wouldn't be the first time; HCR had the same problem.

Are there laws that prevent you from building mosques near national parks or something? Or is this just a general rule that you can't have any businesses there? Do all the other businesses in that area need to leave too?

No, the reason he wants it to be a NP is that if it is, the US government can control what is built and the condition of the area. In other words, the small government conservative is demanding complete government oversight over private businesses.

Actually, that would be hysterical if he did that. Declare Ground Zero a national battlefield. Just Ground Zero. The actual footprint of the towers. Then declare that everything outside the "battlefield" is open for development. So, literally, across the street from the "battlefield" you could have a row of mosques.

2010-09-03 12:58:55 AM
Elzar: today we have no mosques even remotely close.

You are a farking idiot. Sorry you have to hear it this way.

2551 Massachusetts Avenue, Northwest.

Seems to me that having a mosque near the "The Ground Zero" tower would be a pretty good deterrence from future attacks by Muslims.

serial_crusher: Are there laws that prevent you from building mosques near national parks or something? Or is this just a general rule that you can't have any businesses there? Do all the other businesses in that area need to leave too?

The laws involved are extremely conservative. Basically, since landmarks declined to declare the building historic, the only power the government has is eminent domain. There are no federal or state laws which restrict the right of property owners to build on their property, no matter what it's declared.

log_jammin: why are we still talking about this? This is the stupidest non-issue ever.

No more stupid than almost every other wedge non-issue created and perpetuated by the rich and powerful to keep the middle class from uniting, exercising its political power and changing society for the better.

This one just happens to be the latest so it appears dumber. It's "in the moment", as it were.

I think we agree, but we're stating it in different terms. The whole ground zero mosque controversy IS an issue in American politics and has been for, what, a month? That doesn't mean it SHOULD be an issue and it's just about the stupidest American political issue since the last stupid American political issue. Which was...uuhhh...can't remember...OOOHHHHH---I got it! The President of the United States is a Muslim!

Is there even such a thing as a "national battlefield"? I know we make some battlefields into memorial zones, but are they actually called national battlefields?

DamnYankees: Is there even such a thing as a "national battlefield"? I know we make some battlefields into memorial zones, but are they actually called national battlefields?

yes. there are 11 of them operated by the NPS, mostly civil war.

And doesn't calling someplace a battlefield imply there was a... what's the word... a battle?
We didn't exactly do a lot of fighting there.

I've been to quite a few of them. I just didn't know they had that official designation.

National Battlefield Parks are an official subset of the National Park system. There are National Battlefield Parks (Kennessaw Mountain, Manassas and Richmond), National Military Parks, National Battlefields (and yes there is a difference) and National Battlefield Sites.

Confusing, isn't it? But yes, what Newt wants does exist. I'd love to hear someone question him on those small distinctions and have him stammer out some dodge about his complete lack of knowledge about the differences.

I take that back, he may actually know. He's got those ghostwritten alternative history books about the Civil War.

The Little Bighorn battlefield is technically a national monument.

Declaring Ground Zero a national battlefield landmark doesn't give them a free pass on religious discrimination.

Not sure if anyone's said it, but

STFU Newt you cock!

Amazing how these peoople can be "rehabilitated" and brought back out into the general public.
