Hardly weird. Bull sharks have some extra internal goodies that let them survive in fresh water indefinitely. In some African rivers, they're found hundreds of miles inland in fresh water estuaries.

Unless I'm mistaken, the "river monsters" guy found that some bull sharks had swum over a dam in a fresh water river many years ago and had survived and reproduced in the upstream area, and attacked some people and a horse. It was a bit confusing until someone remembered the flooding that had brought the lower river up over the dam, allowing a salt water critter to 'jump the dam'.

For many decades, there was also a 'lake nicaragua' shark found in the fresh water lake in...well...nicaragua. Later it was discovered that these were bull sharks which had made their way into the lake and continued to thrive.

IIRC theyve been found pretty far up the mississippi too. Never get anything cool like that here in the great lakes, just farking mussels and carp...

Hell, we never get any cool invasive species up here, the south gets kudzu, growing a couple feet a day, taking over entire towns. We get... garlic mustard weed. Woo. Oh noes, emerald ash borers, scary. Not as scary as farkING KILLER BEES!!!!

/sigh

Why couldn't the guy, you know, let the thing go on living it's life instead of killing the damn thing.

The shark community has had it with Obama too and sent a shark assassin to take him out.

What kind of tackle short of some metal leader would bring that thing in? Maybe some high lb fluorocarbon, but I am suspicious he just happened to bring this thing in. I dunno, maybe he hooked it just right.

Nothing remarkable about that. We get bull sharks in the rivers in Australia all the time. And they're stroppy mofos, too.

Time for a roll call over in the Senate. Who's missing?

Bull sharks have been found in Illinois that traveled up via the Mississippi. Those are some bad mo'farkers.

Maxor: Damn now this proves reincarnation, we just couldn't keep teddy Kennedy away from Washington.

Oh, fark, that's funny. That's one of those brilliant jokes where all the pieces just click and you think "now, why didn't I think of that?" "Why didn't I come up with such a hilarious joke?" Oh, man. Wow. You can see how it all makes perfect logical sense, and yet, bang, it's farking funny! The parallels are all there, right? Kennedy was widely known by his nickname "the shark" or something, right? And since he only just died it's so farking timely, too. And then there is the whole reincarnation aspect which TOTALLY connects with both Kennedy and this particular episode. You didn't have to reach or stretch at all for this brilliant, hysterical joke. Comedy genius! That's what you are!

Wow. Tell another!

Wow. Someone caught a shark in salt water!

squirmster: Wow. Someone caught a shark in salt water!

Not enough salt in the water in that area for other sharks, needs to be a bit closer to the bay.

Bull sharks are found in fresh water all the time, they are not strictly salt water critters.

I was gonna say that it given how much trouble it is to bring in a shark less than half its length, he deserved to keep it. Then I re-read the article and saw that he was using a net. =\ Still, fresh shark steaks are awesome.

Or, you know... had a net.

According to the article he was using a net to catch rays for some research project. The shark was in his net. Read much?

Meh. Two-handed catches are not impressive. Try one-handed next time. And be sure to keep both feet in-bounds.
