He may hate us, but I love him. Basically his entire family is made up of sushi chefs and so when he moved to the area he took over a meh sushi bar just down the street from my boyfriend and turned it into one of the best places I've ever eaten. Occasionally he'll do "Chef's dinners" which are these unbelievably good seven course meals with wine and sake pairings.

And yeah, he knows us by sight, knows our names and stuff. We always sit at the bar, because he's usually willing to talk to us about what's going on foodwise. His girlfriend usually works as hostess for the Chef's dinners and is a total sweetheart.

Seriously, I love that place.

Quite the opposite. I am expressing some of those things on what I think tastes horrible.

What I came here to say.


I ate in a nice sushi place out in California a few weeks ago. While good, it still didn't top my favorite places here in Houston...except the wait staff which were all Japanese girls (giggity).

And by favorite places, I'm talking about one of the best places in Houston - right out the North gate of NASA. It's a hole in the wall that no "hip" 20-30 something would be caught dead at.

8. I don't even HAVE a sushi chef. :-/

I've always thought of sushi as more art than food. Had a bad experience the one and only time I tried it. Bit into a flying fish egg and nearly projectile vomited right then and there.

Around here, a lot of people use frozen tuna. Toward the wintertime, we use a rich-colored tuna with a nice oil content. As a duty as a sushi chef, you're supposed to give the finest cuts to your customer. But then people are so used to the frozen sushi, they think it's bad, return it, and it goes to waste.

Some people just need serious beatings. Rich, oily tuna? WANT!

Can't really blame them. It's like only eating Hydrox your whole life. When you finally get the real stuff (Oreos), you think they taste bad simply because you don't realize perfection when it's in your mouth

I'm old and increasingly set in my ways, etc. That said, I've never eaten sushi and admit the concept of eating raw fish is not appealing, I also hear that 'sushi' doesn't necessarily mean 'uncooked'... but I'd be up for trying some if they had some type of inexpensive sampler platter - I don't want to waste food if I'm not going to like it/eat it.

I'd welcome a chance to go try some with someone that knows about it all... I'm painfully "meat n taters" guy so if there's soy, ginger or any type of hot sauce, I'm okay - but too much rabbit food & all that ... well that'll not sweetening the deal...

Nigiri isn't "rolled sushi". It's fish with rice, essentially anything that's not sashimi. Maki is rolled sushi.

The local Asian grocery sells Unagi Kayabaki, an entire charcoal grilled seasoned eel, in the frozen food section. It's about the price of a McDonalds extra value meal. You don't even have to cook it. Just thaw it out, slice it up, and serve with rice. It even makes microwaved rice taste better...

A little bit. Nigiri basically means "rice ball", and nigiri-sushi is the ball of sushi rice with something, usually raw fish, on top of it. Where you are wrong is that there are a lot of other things involving raw fish that are not sashimi, including maki-sushi (rolls), and some kinds of donburi (rice-bowls).

"nigiri" is not limited to sushi, though. O-nigiri is a common lunch or snack food, and it is basically a good sized rice-ball (about the size of the palm of your hand), often filled with something, which may or may not be wrapped in nori (seaweed). They are great for packed lunches and stuff. :D

I know a couple 70 year old Japanese men that do that.

Plenty of Japanese people in Japan do this. If it's improper, it's probably due to outdated etiquette along the lines of not transferring your fork back to your right hand after using a knife to cut your steak. People might get uppity about it, but they are snobs anyway. ;)
