Andromeda:
To be fair, I've known one or two people who have been interviewed by him on the show and thus got to talk to Stephen the person (not character) before and after. The impression appears to be is he does half the stuff he does just for the fun of it.

Isn't that true for all of us? There's no better reason to do something than for the fun of it. Remember, you're going to be dead for a looonnnngggg time.

How did you get your sense of humor shot off? Just curious.

it tends to take a different mind to understand satire, irony and context but shouldn't be hard to see the rediculousness of the situations he portrays.

* Unemployment is still at 9.5%

* The deficit ballooned to 1.4 trillion dollars.

* Al Gore released his chakra.

* Sarah Palin made another million dollars.

If you want to hold a rally, hold a jobs rally.

All that happened while Glenn Beck was parodying a human being.

What is your point?

I think the gas, funnel cake and t-shirt sales would probably be good for the economy. It would just be kinda sad because some people would actually feel like they were being political.

----

The point is that like it or not Beck's rally was effecitve. Beck is creating cohesion between various political and religious groups by giving them a common spiritual language to describe their politics. "Faith... Charity... etc etc"

Politically, this was a very smart move and could be the start of a powerful movement of which Beck has control.

What would be the purpose of Colbert's rally except to be a shallow parody of something more effective?

I am SO there!!!

I wouldn't necessarily call it mockery. Serious issues can be presented with humor.

Just shift it a couple blocks away to the stage at the Washington Monument, if the Lincoln Memorial gets people worked up. (Though Abe himself probably would've gotten some yuks out of it.)

You get a giant pahllic symbol as a bonus. It's win-win!

I could see him doing this. I mean he'd only have to do his usual routine for a bit, then bring on the guest speakers and maybe a band or three.

I don't know if he'd even get a brazillion like Beck did, but I'd try to be in that number.

Pocket Ninja: He won't do it, because it's a no-win situation for him. If he doesn't get demonstrably more people than Beck did, it's a talking point for Beck to use from here until eternity. If he does get demonstrably more people than Beck, it's proof of the liberal media controlling everything and reason for Beck's supporters to fight harder to reclaim America.

This sounds sensible without making any sense whatsoever, but the same is true of the notion of Colbert holding some kind of anti-Beck rally.

Pretend for a moment that you were wrong, and Beck and the kornsurvatards wouldn't particularly care whether he scored more attendees. What would be your analysis then? Is there any point to this, beyond nonsensically trying to assert that one rally is meaningless because another rally had more people?

BroadbandGremlin: So Dr. Laura quit radio because she has First Amendment rights when she is on the air?

Um, she has First Amendment rights at all times she's in the United States, and if imprisoned in a foreign country for violating speech laws, she'd likely also have the embassy lobbying for her release.

So while she likely didn't quit radio because she has First Amendment rights (for much the same reason I didn't just make a ham sandwich because states may not prohibit the right to vote based on gender), she still enjoys her First Amendment rights.

BroadbandGremlin: / And if you didn't realize it the first time, I was repeating a joke someone posted in another teabagger thread earlier. :)

Yes, but the joke wasn't funny, so I decided to use it to the advantage I desired, rather than the one you intended. Ah, the spirit of capitalism.
