Wow, I would think a helmet would seriously hinder a hawk's maneuverability while in flight.

wow all the "shoot the bird" posts.. grow the fark up.

as for the carrier getting singled out.. try a different carrier (esp one with short hair) see if the birds pay attention at all.

they only hunt down people involved in the actual war crimes. a fighter or bomber pilot that didn't intentionally target civilians would be ignored.

A blackbird kept swooping down at me when I was biking home (apparently I was too close to its nest). The solution: Put plastic eyeballs on the back of my helmet. Apparently these birds only attack from behind and the eyeballs confused it.

It also lets me keep an eye on the drivers behind me, so extra bonus there.

FTFA:
Heinz Sander, 92, said he regularly sees the mail carrier hiding from the hawk under trees or in his garage.

"I saw [the hawk] coming, I was ducking ... it was so fast and he was up again. It's fairly big ... more than a metre or so."

He likened the attacks to a fighter plane.

They'd likely be ignored even if they did, given that was basically everyone's preferred bombing tactic.

The bird in the photo is a juvenile Swainson's Hawk... but me suspects that that individual bird isn't actually the one doing the attacking.

1st year Swainies in general are unbelievably tame and calm; as in you can drive up the car, get out, stretch, point, talk loudly, take photos, etc. with them less than 10 feet away. If they have a foot pulled up they won't even lower it, and instead will just yawn lazily, preen and stare curiously at the monkeys staring up at them. Very passive, curious and non-aggressive.

The adult Swainson's (even at this stage of the babies leaving their care) though, are complete polar opposites of the juveniles, and are notoriously fearless and aggressive (read: insane). The adults will scream bloody murder and smack the crap out of the back of your head if they think you are just a bit too close to the home territory/their now-adult size offspring. I've had adult Swainson's chase my car down the road from telephone pole to telephone pole, screaming and diving the whole way with zero provocation (other than being a slowly driving car down a country road).

I would bet dollars to donuts that the bird doing the attacking was the ADULT Swainson's, and not this random, curious juvenile bird (probably the attacker's offspring) that was in the area that the news people captured a picture of. ;)

Put a set of big eyes on top of the pike helmet, and most birds will be scared off.

That bird leaves behind a real Messerschmitt on the driveway.

Seems like a sound theory, especially the aggressiveness displayed when they're nesting.

Many years ago, I had a summer job taking readings at various well sites just north of Calgary where I grew up. There were a lot of Swainies that nested in the tallest of the scrub poplars around these well sites. One, in particular, made a regular deal of dive-bombing me when I got out of the truck to take readings. On at least two occasions, it successfully knocked the hard hat off of my head. I always had my head on a swivel when I got out of the truck on that lease, because even when she wasn't around, she could appear out of nowhere.

Beautiful birds, and tough as all hell.

I have a rock that keeps tigers away. Come to think of it, I don't see any hawks around so it must work on them too.

Very attractive plumage and, if caged, needs to secured to his perch in some manner...

I love hawks. Prefer to BBQ them but baked is good too if you know what you're doing and remember to tenderize and baste them during the cooking process.

Thanks for the info. The species of bird was conspicuously absent from TFA. Of course the author probably thought "hawk" was the species.

I'm just teasing of course. I would have run after 2 attacks probably. What else can you do, fight the hawk?
