Hello, Chuck...this is your cousin, Marvin...Marvin Berry...you know that new sound you were looking for? Listen to this!

2010-09-02 09:28:32 AM
Amazing - went on to listen to lots more - good stuff. Died in 1973, but not before causing a 'stir' in the church from people who had heard such a thing.

Damn, that was cool. Nice find subby! It's going to be stuck in my head all day now.

2010-09-02 11:33:46 AM
60's, it says. Looks like she's playing a Gibson SG?

2010-09-02 11:42:55 AM
I'm usually not a big fan of all this Jesus Rock stuff, but that was pretty damn good.

Damn- that gee-tar's got devil's horns on it!

/SG FTW

You go girl!

/gave me goosebumps

i'd love have seen her and Ray Charles play together

2010-09-02 03:11:21 PM
Sister Rosetta needs to be in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame as an early influence. She gave Little Richard his first gig, was one of the first people to play electric guitar on record, was a big favorite of Elvis' and Bob Dylan's, and you cannot tell me that Chuck Berry didn't steal guitar licks from her. She was quite awesome.

One more thanks for subby from me. Awesome.

Infamous Dr. X: I'm usually not a big fan of all this Jesus Rock stuff, but that was pretty damn good.

Some church days are better than others. Her voice was terrific, too.

I'd fark her...

60's? Sorry - I thought it was in the 50's. I looked up the TV show, looks like it debuted in 1962, so it had to be around then, I think.

I stand corrected! Still a damn great video

Sister Rosetta Tharp is hardly obscure; she's a major name in blues.

SO MUCH THIS.

Why have I never heard of her? Great find, subby!

Huh. There was a time when Christian rock didn't make you want to stab yourself in the ears with hedge clippers.

The quality seemed to be more late 50's than early 60's. Generally there's a difference. Still, I believe she played like this in the 50's as well.

Maybe it was a rerun.

/not serious, but that lady could seriously play

Calling her a Gospel chick is like calling Billie Holiday a jazz chick. Along with Mahalia Jackson, Tharpe was one of the pillars of Gospel music.

2010-09-02 04:29:42 PM
That was fantastic. I'd never heard of her. Off to google now.
Thanks subby.

Jimi, Stevie, settle down and listen to your Church sermon.

lol

Damn that was unexpected. Very cool...

Sister Rosetta Tharp used to play the "Chitlin Circuit" around the southeast - she played the old armory in Durham many times.

Her theme song was "Sing Sister Sing" and if a copy ever appears on YouTube or iTunes, I'll be a happy man.

2010-09-02 04:40:35 PM
The Wood Brothers do a great cover of this song.

Yea, it's an SG Custom. They were introduced in 1961, so yea - the video had to be post 1960.

By the way subby - great link! Congrats on the green.

Old school gospel and christian music was always kickin ass.

I always liked how he had to say the last name Berry for the idiots watching the movie who were thinking "Who's Chuck???"

Marvin: "Hello, Chuck"
Chuck Berry: "Yes, this is Chuck. Who's this?"
Marvin: "This is your cousin, Marvin"
Chuck Berry: "Marvin who?"
Marvin: "Marvin Berry"
Chuck Berry: "Oh, hello Marvin. What can I do for you?"
Marvin: "You know that new sound you were looking for? Listen to this!"

That was my first thought just reading the headline.

It's great to see an actual video of her playing, rather than just hear her playing.
Thank you subby.

So...let me get this straight...up above my head, there's music in the air?

I don't believe you. Maybe if you say it another few hundred times.

/sista could swing. Loved it.

It's not easy to play blues in "Phoebe" tuning.

Well done, subby!

Heard her sing and play before but never cut loose on a solo.

Good music is good, no matte what the genre, something a few Farkers should well keep in mind.

Phish still sucks, tho'.
And Metallica.

God, I hate that style of music.

And Gibson SG's. And crappy microphones.

I'll give her this - seems to be at least 45-50 years ago, so good for her. Early adopter and reasonably proficient. Nice.

\Gospel music sucks. I'd rather listen to rap - and rap makes me want to kill myself by jabbing knitting needles in my eyes and ears.

Your Fark handle is appropriate.
