I've gone all these decades with no vise.

But I have a right-angle grinder, a sawzall, a chain saw, a bottle jack, and a splitting wedge, all of which are well-used.

20/20. Just call me Norm.

I can do everything that those 20 tools can do with nothing more than a pair of lineman pliers and a pocket knife. And I can eat 51 eggs.

20/20 as well, and then some..

But.. I have my eye on a set of these:

Never know when you'll need to take apart a bridge, or something..

Well the center punch can pop a window and save you if you ever flip your car into a canal. Or, it is handy if you like to break into cars.

I didn't see the need for a vise either, but about 20 years ago, I went to an auction way out in the sticks, and got a pretty big expensive one for $7.
It's come in really handy, and kind of doubles as an anvil.

Saws? Yeesh. At least 11 different types that I can recall off the top of my head.

I've only got about 2,000/20. Seriously. A couple of my neighbors, who are toolaholics themselves, will occasionally come and ask me if I have some really weird tool for something. More often than not, I do.

About once a year I have to go buy a tool. This year it was a 38mm socket... you don't need one of those very often ;)

18/20. I don't have (or immediately need) a crosscut saw or a pipe wrench.

Aside from the obvious sockets, ratchets, wrenches, and screwdrivers the one tool I find indispensable is the Dremel rotary tool. Grinder, cutter, polisher, even a small drill -- the Dremel gets taken out more often than any of my other power tools.

Here's another one that everyone should have: A good and really, really long flathead screwdriver (preferably with a magnetized end). It works as a chisel, punch, pry bar, stake marker, lever, and probably a dozen other things. Oh yeah, you can even use it to drive screws!

I have one of those. It keeps my 24mm Allen wrench company.

Yep, got that. It's real Craftsman™, so every decade or so when I break it using it as a pry bar or something, I get a new one ;)

I haven't used a vise in years. Adjustable wrenches never get where I want (I use open end/boxed end combos). Only the spring-loaded center punch will pop a window effectively when you're about to drown. And what about Visegrips? Who can live without those?

And finally, I like the angled pipe wrenches better. They lay flat when you have to hold a pipe in one while turning with another. Better leverage, too.

I keep a Leatherman under my motorcycle seat. You'd be amazed at what that thing is capable of. I have a mini version on my keychain.

2010-09-02 12:39:39 AM
I have most of the tools on that list...I don't own a sledgehammer, center punch, jigsaw, circular saw, or machinist vise.

/bought the cutest pink screwdriver a few days ago

18/20

I have no vise. I do have a massive pair of vise grips and a big chunk of concrete, which seems to have done the trick lo these many years. Also, safety goggles are for pussies, until some huge piece of shiat flies into your eye and makes your vitreous humor squirt out onto your shirt (which has never happened to me), so I don't have any of those.

Adds:

SawzAll
Wonderbar
Cordless Drill with 40 or so drive bits
Ratcheting multidriver
Chainsaw
Circuit Tester
Dremel Multitool

Have them all ...the trick is teaching the wife how to use them.

2010-09-02 01:16:14 AM
I bought a John Deere lawn tractor about 13 years ago for my wife and I haven't cut the lawn since. Jus' saying...

2010-09-02 02:04:33 AM
I own 2 wrenches, a couple of screwdrivers, needle-nose pliers, extension cords, measuring tape & hammer. I have no need, let alone room to store the other items. In fact, I have never used some of the items, such as a circular saw, power drill, jigsaw & socket wrenches,

If I need something repaired, I call our apartment management company & they send someone from maintenance to take care of the problem.

really? What for?

The VW, Porsche and BMW were always easy to pull apart with a 36 mm and a decent breaker bar.

Why did you need a 38?

I carry a spring loaded one, as do almost every other emt I know, plus cops.

I honestly don't remember which vehicle had the axle nut that needed removing. One of my neighbors needed help, and when all was said and done, I ended up with the socket ;)

WTF do you need a vise for?

Pry bar, most definitely - preferably the little wonder bar thingy...

Other than that, I'd recommend a nice adjustable pair of pliers or vise grips.

/need to get a new leatherman

20/20 plus VOM, sawzall, planer, jointer, table saw, band saw, compressor, nail gun, router, drill press, and on and on and on.

NO anvil.

LISTFAIL.

I have two sledges; a full sized one and a mini-handle sledge for awkward places. You never know when you are going to have to bust something up.

Meh. Coffee cup, pliers and a butter knife. I'm good to go.

21 - A can of WD-40.

List fails without mini crowbar.

2010-09-02 06:45:20 AM
I have a hammer.

I also have a multi-tool (Gerber brand, competitor to leatherman) and a victorinox cybertool.

They seem to be all I need, but then I'm a computer geek, not an outdoorsman who built his own house or maintains his own car.

11/20

Power tools are for wimps, I bore my holes hand crank drill.

2010-09-02 06:46:00 AM
Safety glasses should be number 1. Also, they forgot work gloves and a pencil for marking measurements.

Or equivalent. I pull this out just about any time I use my 20/20 tools.

18/20.

Dont have a pipe wrench or a Circular Saw.

Do have a hell of a lot of car tools that went unmentioned that I think are a necessity, like a trolley jack.

2010-09-02 06:55:07 AM
I own all 20, and my son has distributed them in random places in the garage and house. Sigh. At least the vise is bolted down.

2010-09-02 06:56:13 AM
Oh, and although not really a tool: #21 - Duct tape.

How can there not be a hacksaw on that list?

Agree with the failure to add duct tape and vise grips.
