So how were they doing it?
Sticking them in a tube and hitting the bottom of the round?

That must have been one unlucky kid. A .22 slug coming out of a shell with no barrell to speed it up isn't going that fast. It'd have to hit you just right to kill you I'd think.

ha haw - when I was about 8 or 9 I remember stealing 22 caliber bullets from the rifle range at summer camp. We tried throwing them against shiat in an effort to make them fire. We were unsuccessful and obviously kind of dumb.

Needless to say I applaud that Darwin won out in this kid's story but was apparently asleep at the wheel back when I was trying to fire .22 caliber bullets off in something other than a gun that was pointed down-range.

I used to do this all the time as a kid. The problem is that smokeless powder isn't explosive. It just burns. So this poor kid died for nothing.

After we figured out the smokeless powder deal we moved on to scraping the powder out of roll caps into empty 9mm casings. Occasionally we'd fill one up but more often then not we'd get a casing half full and it would explode while we were scraping a cap into it. Moved to Pyrodex after that and was satisfied.

I'd wager he was shot with the rifle while they were unloading it. I've popped primers on a number of 22's in vices and the bullet never left the casing. The side of the casing just exploded.

That's the other teen's story and he's sticking with it.

The parents will soon be multi-millionaires because the ammunition manufacturer didn't put a warning on the box about manually taking apart cartridges so you could blow things up.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office says around 3:30 p.m. they were called to the scene on reports of someone with a gunshot wound to the chest. Investigators remain on scene, and the Mesa County Coroner is also there, trying to determine the cause and manner of the boy's death.

Well, if it's as-stated, it's not a "gunshot wound", is it?
It's an explosive device at that point, I guess.

Yeah, I also find it unlikely. This has been demonstrated time and time again, ammunition "cooking off" without a barrel doesn't throw the bullet at speeds which would generally be considered lethal. Usually, far below.

CSB:

Back in junior high, this one dipshiat in my class "accidentally" shot himself in the thigh with his dad's .22. He had to call in sick for a day or two, and when he came back, he was still the cocky douche he was before it happened. One day, during PE, he was talking shiat while we were playing basketball.

"Hey retard," I said, "at least I've never shot myself in the leg."

/He kept quiet for the rest of the day.

Yeah, as a kid I hit those w/ hammers. Holy crap it was fun and awesome until one exploded and sent shrapnel into my leg.

Yeah. I feel for these kids :(

Indeed, I can't see how anything from a 22 going off would give you more then a scratch. The force mostly takes the path of least resistance, and goes through the casing, the bullet does not get accelerated all that much. Maybe they had it inside pliers something that let the force of the explosion accelerate the bullet.

/yeah I know, deflageration

Summer of 1996:

I'm visiting my uncle and cousins in California. Once day, I had to watch after the dipshiat kid who belonged to my uncle's girlfriend (skank he was banging). Anyhow, we're swimming in the pool, and the kid says he has to run inside and use the bathroom. Fine.

A short while later, he walks outside with a .357 Magnum round and throws it on the concrete next to the pool.

/Farking retard.

Yeah but it's typical of journalists and non-gun-owners in general, thanks to the hysteria and ignorance that abounds about firearms.

Reminds me of this incident. The woman in question claimed her car was shot so many times by US forces that she was able to collect "handfuls of bullets from the seats" of the car she was in.

It's easy for people who don't know what they're talking about to make claims about 300-400 being fired at their car in the space of a minute or two. Not to mention that those bullets reach their destination scorching hot.

2010-09-02 01:58:32 AM
When I was a kid and wanted to blow stuff up with .22 rounds, I just put them IN THE GUN!

tankjr: The problem is that smokeless powder isn't explosive. It just burns.

The rate at which it burns is proportional to the pressure. If you put it in a sealed can and ignited it, it'd explode.

But yea, taking apart the cartridge isn't why the kid died.

Not gonna say how I did it, but back when I was a shooting instructor with the Boy Scouts of America I removed the powder from thousands of rounds. Heck, I once did 2,000 in one sitting! There is a very safe way of doing this (relatively speaking, of course).

Oh, because I am sure someone will ask, I never did this in front of any of the Scouts.

Also, one should never have a small pile of gunpowder and one should never have about a 100 empty .22 casings mixed in with the gunpowder and one should never then set it on fire. Because doing so would be incredibly dangerous and stupid.

Couple of brothers tried this in our town when we were kids. They decided to make a pipe bomb with the powder. Things were going fine until they decided to *hammer* the ends of the pipe shut.

Some damage ensued but fortunately darwin gave them another chance.

Damn I hate to see local news show up on Fark. On the upside, the Western Colorado gene pool is now a tiny bit deeper.

2010-09-02 02:04:13 AM
I remember way back when, used to do stuff like take the powder out of bullets and experiment with it. Was pretty common at the rez, I'm pretty sure kids down there still do it. But there was 1 guy who isn't the sharpest marble in the closet, he thought it would be fun to smash 22 shells between rocks. I don't know how many he did before he shot himself in the leg. I didn't see it, but I did laugh when I heard about it.

Still, dumb kids learn not to dumb things the hard way and this kid paid his price. I feel bad for the guy and his friend, worse for his parents who will have to carry that load the rest of their lives.

Wait... I'm on fark.... LOLz... hahahaa darWIN!!! klorine in the jean poolzwarz!! rolfmao derp derp

We were never able to achieve high enough compression with smokeless to get an explosion. Pyrodex, by contrast, you could dump in a sandwich bag and wrap in some masking tape and make cherry bombs. Good times, man.

This is how my brother lost one of his fingers. He was emptying small caliber into a spent CO2 cartridge to make some kind of bomb.

If the blast went the other way, it would have killed him.

2010-09-02 02:06:24 AM
You can't "blow stuff up" with gunpowder. It burns too slowly for that. Gunpowder is a propellant, not an explosive.

When I was about 13 years old, my 14yo neighbor, my brother and myself found ourselves one afternoon in my neighbor's grandparent's garage with a bench vice and a 12 gauge shell. He was attempting to strike the shell with a hammer and a nail.

Without really thinking long and hard, I realized what would happen if he were to successfully strike that primer with that nail and hammer. My brother and I left, and went home and just waited.

He never was able to make it go off. He was convinced that the shot would simply exit the end of the shell. We argued about this for a good 20 minutes.

Later on that day, we continued our earlier day efforts of attempting to jump a record thirteen empty 5 gallon buckets with our dirt bikes.

My younger brother broke his arm that evening attempting our 5 gallon bucket stunts.

Ahhh.. to be young again.
