I wonder what they found in the tin of spotted dick?

TIN MANS COCK?

I used to find huge cockatrices in Florida. One day I opened a jar of peanut butter and one was inside. I'm not sure if someone had left the top loose, or the cockatrice had opened it on its own.

Oh wow man, that cockatrice was GNARLY!

A dead cockatrice aint bad to have around, as long as you have a pair of gloves.

There are scientists who believe BPA can interfere with the hormonal system by copying oestrogen.

Well, good thing we don't have that one here in the US. We probably did until the oester beds off Long Island and the Chesapeake Bay went dead...

So we have this well-known storage device that we commonly call a "tin can."

In the UK, we say that something is "tinned." In the USA, we say that something is "canned."

It's as if these two cultures were completely cut off from each other and their languages diverged as a result of the isolation. Soon we'll be unable to converse at all.

Can someone clue me in? I'm failing to see the connection between tin cans and cockatrices. Some meme, or clever (or not-so-clever) word play I'm not getting?

Nevermind, geckoone's post gave me a clue and a quick bit of google-fu gave me the answer.

BPA was found in various foods including popular baby foods. In amounts lower than European standards.

That's the entire article, in a nut shell can.

It's somebody's job to take them out of one container and put them in another. I wonder what kind of resume is required. I mean, exactly what kind of skill set are employers looking for?

BPA

The biggest problem with removing BPA is that there is currently nothing that can replace it, especially in high acid (low pH) systems.

The second biggest problem is that we can detect it at ppb or even ppt levels. Food/drinking water doesn't contain more "chemicals" than they used to, we just do a better job of detecting them and a worse job of understanding that just because we can detect something doesn't mean that it is suddenly dangerous.

taking organic chemistry right now, this is relevant to my interests.

booo hooo BPA. bonus for gender bender.

also why does there need to be a plastic lining.

is just having straight tin even worse for you.

had some fun this summer synthesising Bisphenol Z

also it is to my understanding that the BPA in plastic is residual amounts that have remained unreacted in the polymerisation.

technically, cholesterol is made up of chemicals. in fact, almost all foods are made up of chemicals.

JonnyBGoode: Can someone clue me in? I'm failing to see the connection between tin cans and cockatrices. Some meme, or clever (or not-so-clever) word play I'm not getting?

It is from an old video game called NetHack (also called Rogue). The game was like a dungeons and dragons sort of adventure but was graphically represented with text -- in other words very simple graphics made up of letters.

Anyway, it also had some humor and some puzzles, and so as I remember if you found a tin of meat (which could be used as food to restore health) it might be cockatrice meat, which could turn you to stone. But you could also pick up the cockatrice corpse if you had gloves and use it as a weapon to turn other things into stone. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that was the gist.

It really was a great game. You can still find versions to play for free on the net.
