Who is stupid?

The policy reflects a law on the island that will invalidate all older birth certificates on Sept. 30, the agency said.

In other words Puerto Rico is not gonna accept those certificates either. Those racist Puerto Ricans are racist against Puerto Ricans.

Puerto Rico recently reissued all of its birth certificates because of rampant fraud. Older birth certificates are no longer valid in Puerto Rico, why would they be valid in Ohio.

Anyone born in Puerto Rico needs to apply for a new one if they wish to use it to obtain a driver's license or passport.

FTFA: Since early April, the bureau has refused to accept Puerto Rican birth certificates issued before Jan. 1 as proof of identity and date of birth. The policy reflects a law on the island that will invalidate all older birth certificates on Sept. 30, the agency said.

Its a trolltastic headline, but something is really farked up here. If the certificate is good through Sept. 30th in Puerto Rico, it ought to be accepted on full faith and credit in other states until Sept 30th. The whole goddamn April, May, June, July, August, September gap is pretty damn noticable. It might not be racism but somebody's got some 'splaning to do.

Hoo boy.

It's late, but I can tell that this thread is going to be nice and full of thoughtful, well-researched and unoffensive commentary. I'd grab some popcorn but my bedtime is coming up.

ANYHOO...this isn't as stupid as it sounds. Given the huge mixup over PR Birth Certificates right now, and given that PR is known to have white, black AND brown people, every illegal wanting to to claim citizenship is busy photoshopping themselves a functional PR birth certificate.

Obviously, they are handling their cut-off dates poorly, but other than that this seems like an intelligent (if badly explained and executed) policy.

In totally unrelated news:

IamKaiserSoze!!!From Tom Jensen at Public Policy Polling on Tuesday: "We'll start rolling out our Ohio poll results tomorrow but there's one finding on the poll that pretty much sums it up: by a 50-42 margin voters there say they'd rather have George W. Bush in the White House right now than Barack Obama."

In 2008, Barack Obama rolled over John McCain 2,940,044 to 2,677,820.

Using Surber Math, that's a 262,224-vote margin.

What happened?

The unknown became the known.

Prince Charming turned out to be a frog.

Imagine that.

This is exactly like my situation.

I was born in Quebec, and I applied for a Canadian passport last year. I was told that in order to get a passport I'd need to get a new birth certificate. Apparently. back when I was born the certificates were handled by local parishes who weren't too great at the record keeping, so everyone who has an old Quebec birth certificate needs to apply and provide other documentation to get a new one.

A couple of weeks wait and about $50 and I had a new certificate and I got my passport no problem.

No racism, no discrimination, nothinig other than bureacratic red tape to make sure they have audit trails for this stuff.

TOTAL NON-ISSUE.

"Puerto Rico's law change followed raids last year against a criminal ring that stole thousands of birth certificates and other identifying documents from several schools in the U.S. commonwealth. The island is now requiring about 5 million people - including 1.4 million in the U.S. - to apply for new birth certificates with security features."

I was telling a coworker who's Puerto Rican that he needed a new birth certificate. You'd think I was telling him to chop off his own arm because of how he refused to believe he needed a new one.
