Donald_McRonald: These guys haven't made any good music since ____.

Heh. Let's hope that argument doesn't happen.

Anywho, Mother's Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magik are just as good today as ever. Californication was a good album too.

What a mediocre (at best) band, a bassplayer and some other guys.
Good to know anyone can be a star despite having little or no talent.

Heard Anferny Keadis talking to some people at a festival show,..one of the most idiotic sounding morons on the planet.
This guy makes Kanye look bright.

Stadium Arcadium is an album so spectacularly bad that its mere existence absorbs, like a black hole, any of the previous notable work they've ever done.

Kiedis came to one of my band's shows back in the day. Afterwards I was talking to him and he said "it's always great to hear new and exciting music emanating from the land of lands."

I suspected heroin use.

so it's like the Make Believe of rock albums?

The Uplift Mofo Party Plan and Freakey Styley are too awesome to be negated by the shiat that is Stadium Arcadium.

I like that one song of theirs that's a meaningless collection of rhyming phrases with a mellow beat behind it.

Ever?

Okay, harshness is for entertainment purposes only, but this is a major band that goes right over my head.

I've tried. Many times. I actually own everything between Freaky Styley and Californication (except One Hot Minute). I've always been surrounded by many Peppers fans who have preached the gospel to me many times, so I've revisited them a lot to see if they click. Never quite happens. At one time I remember really liking Mother's Milk and BSSM, but can't remember why.

That said, "Scar Tissue" is a goddamn amazing song, the harmonies are gorgeous, and the tone on what'shisface guitar blows me away during the solos.

Oh, and that song from some soundtrack with the black and white video in a circus or carnival or something. That song is great.

shoegaze99: except One Hot Minute

I never understood the hate for the album. Always had fun with it.

Did the band name themselves after Chili Willy and The Red Hot Peppers or do they just have similar names?

I've always intended to check it out. Huge Jane's Addiction fan and really enjoy Navarro's guitar work, just never quite got around to it. I think the pairing seemed strange and that put me off a bit.

To this day they hold the title of worst headlining band I've ever put down money to see.

They performed as I suspect would a RHCP tribute band performing their first ever live gig (hell, their first practice session) after being pumped full of 'ludes and heroin and alcohol. No energy whatsoever (Keidis could barely stand let alone sing in time to the music) and all following different musical muses.

Just mesmerizingly memorably awful.
Thankfully, the three opening acts (Sidewinder, Mary's Danish and Camper Van Beethoven all kicked righteous amounts of musical heinie so the night wasn't a wash.

Loved them up 'til "mother's milk" then I jumped of the train (not because they became popular, anti-"hipsters", but because I felt their music took a swift downward turn towards bland unlistenability and away from the comparative greatness of their first 4 releases).

Anthony and Flea were so cool in '92, they hated Def Leppard.

Until Mother's Milk happened, I wanted these guys to succeed. Then the a**holeness kicked up in them.

2010-09-01 08:48:22 PM
They were better when they were all on junk and they sucked then.

Uplift was the best definitely...Organic anti beat box band FTW!

I'm guessing here, but there's a song by the blues great Robert Johnson called "They're Red Hot".. I haven't listened to it in a while but I seem to recall a line in the song that goes "chili peppers, they're red hot". I always thought RHCP got their name from that ..

I pretty much agree. "Mother's Milk" was a huge disappointment for me. I still love the earlier albums. Hillel was fantastic. They had some decent stuff later, but really nothing on par with the first three albums.

I saw them twice on the "Uplift" tour. First show was fantastic. The second it was obvious they were doing (too many) drugs. But at least Fishbone opened, so it was worth the ticket price anyway.

I saw them once on "Mother's Milk" too, but after that I was pretty much done with them...

And damn those awful ballads to hell.

2010-09-01 10:01:34 PM
Oh no!! Once again hate a band for changing over time. How dare they not make the same kind of music they did 25 years ago????//??? I think it'd be pathetic to see people their age after all the shiat and drugs they've done still trying to make the same kind of music. Oh well, haters gonna hate.

Both Uplift and FS are always in heavy rotation at TLP's Cirrhosis-By-The-Sea.

Special Secret Song, FTW.

It was the passing of Hillel that ended them for me.
But there have been less interesting popular bands for sure.

Wow a bunch of jerks above ^^

How about like WTF, when did they stop wearing soup cans and construction paper. Yeah that was a funny video of a famous band that "some people" (maybe not you) like.

Really Funny.

No somebody go listen to your Dashboard Confessional and cut your wrists, because you are hardcore like that.

That's actually one of my favorite albums. It's simply very well done, from pretty much every perspective.

I saw them that year at a place called the Keystone in Palo Alto. Thought they sucked. Watched the vid. Still think they sucked.
Obviously, they put out some good stuff later on.

Uh..... caught them in Morgantown WV ( underground railroad biatches) In I guess '85 with the Hillel, Chaz, Flea Anthony line-up.

Yeah , I fired up kind bud with them and they played the second set wearing socks around their junk.

EPIC. They ripped "Fire", Hendrix woulda been proud.

It's Hot Tamales, and they're red hot,

and The Chili Peppers did a cutesy cover of that on Blood Sugar Sex Magick.

I was never a fan, but I preferred their earlier stuff to what they became when every girl on the block had them penciled in as her favorite band (and if not them, Jane's Addiction, another band I was never fond of).

Catholic Schoolgirls Rule. Yertle the Turtle. Behind the Sun. Me and My Friends. All great tunes. I saw them play an all-ages gig in Madison, WI in 1988. About 200 people, tops. They loaded their own equipment after the show. Nice guys, especially Flea.
