I used that term as a kid, before I knew better. The 'R' word equates the 'N' word in my eyes. My kid is fine but even if she wasn't, I would never use either word, same as any other derogatory name. Personally, I think that calling someone who suffers from a physical or mental handicap "retarded" is wrong. Calling someone who is stupid or willfully ignorant "retarded" is perfectly acceptable. Do you wish you were retarded? Is being retarded a positive thing to be? Would you wish it on your own children? No? Then it's likely a negative factor.

Any negative factor can and will be used to insult people by implying they suffer it. If somebody's not paying attention, we say "what are you, blind?" It's the same thing.

That kind of statement isn't an attack or comment on blind people. THEY can't help that they're blind. Neither can legitimately retarded people help that they are retarded.

The point of the insult is that someone who ISN'T hindered by the disability is acting as if they do due to their own failings. Hence the insult.


Euphemisms boil down to "I'm too prissy and cowardly to say what I mean so I'm going to cutesy it up as if I were talking to a little baby".
