The sheer awesomeness of seeing 'The Soft Bulletin' done live is tainted by the appearance of Dinosaur Jr.

I love the Flaming Lips, but last time they played Austin it was $70, maybe $75, something like that. I don't love anybody that much.

i'd shell out about 3 digits for this. easy.

Between concerts I've been to, concerts I've worked security at, and concerts I've played in...I've probably seen a few hundred shows. And dinosaur jr. was the only band that actually physically HURT me from the volume level. Good CHRIST, the loud. It was unbe-goddamned-lievable. Took two weeks for my hearing to come back.

If you go, bring earplugs. Then stuff 'em in your ears as far as they'll go, and put on a pair of those muffling headphones like they have at the shooting range. Because DAMN.

I'm feeling rather old if it's time to break out the nostalgic set and play The Soft Bulletin. How about In a Priest Driven Ambulance??

/Favorite album by them, but never really a huge fan.
//Want to hear Zaireeka done in its entirety...
///though 4 sound systems.
////Do they even play "She Don't Use Jelly" live anymore? Does anybody even remember when they were a one-hit wonder??

Holy shiat, this is like the coming together of peanut butter and chocolate. Two great tastes just got even better.

I first saw the Lips in 1986, when they were still a no-hit wonder... I still love their old stuff. It's nice that their sound has evolved so much over the years though. Very few bands can change their sound so much (successfully, anyway).

J Mascis has been known to blow PA speakers. During his acoustic sets.

I like Flaming Lips, but I've always thought The Soft Bulletin was over-rated. It's good, but kind of comes off as a-typical "This is our mature album. We added a string section" album.

Saw them years ago with Failure opening up for Tool. They sound like a completely different band now.

I'd rather see Dinosaur Jr. than the Flaming Lips. I liked them the first time I saw them but their schtick's worn a bit thin. Dinosaur Jr., as someone already mentioned, is a loud-as-hell good time. If you don't have plugs a bit of balled-up toilet paper can really save you from a multiple-day ringing sound.

When the Lips put out their live DVD "UFOs at the Zoo," it did indeed include a performance of "She Don't Use Jelly." There are some vids on Youtube as well from more recent shows.

So yeah, they haven't totally forgotten what they used to be.

/another vote for In A Priest Driven Ambulance

I love Flaming Lips. They are one of those bands that I really can't remember how many times I've seen live. I feel kinda bad saying this, but they need to start doing drugs again, cause they've been pointless and boring for the better part of a decade now.

But even if it were the Ambulance-era Lips, Dinosaur would still crush them like a grape.

Have you ever seen them play live?

My ears are still ringing from the Beyond tour and that was like 5 years ago or something.

These two put on some of the best shows I've ever seen

I saw them a few months ago. They played it. Nothing else off Transmissions though. I don't even think we got any Soft Bulletin. It was probably about 45% Yoshimi, 45% Embryonic, 9% At War, and 1% Darkside of the Moon.

I'll be seeing the Lips in Columbia in September. It will be the second time I've seen them live. I hope they break out the bubble since it is an outdoor show, but somehow I'm guessing that isn't a part of the show now. I love pretty much everything they've done up until At War With the Mystics. Aside from Pompeii AM (and dear god I hope they play it) that entire album warrants a gigantic meh. I'm divided about Embryonic. So far it sounds better to my ears than AWWTM, but it seems to have pretty much the same sound throughout the entire album.

Saw Flaming Lips with Butthole Surfers and Stone Temple Pilots on STP's first trip to Atlanta.

Flaming Lips was lame, comparatively speaking, that is.

Ugh.. the lips can suck it...(pun intended) Ive seen them 3 times over the span of 5 years. The sets were identical, and i got really sick of hearing Wayne preach "Blah blah blah George Bush, blah blah blah LOVE LIFE blah blah blah" PLAY THE FARKING SONG!. Dinosaur Jr is the hizzy. My old man played bass for them on the Green Mind tour.

Just wanted to jump in and say "Dinosaur Jr" is the stupidest, most-likely-to-have-been-created-by-a-kid-who-poops-his-pants-on-the-short-bus name for a band ever.

Actually, a look at your profile confirms my question. Your dad's band is one of my all time favorites. Saw them many times.

Or, created by the kid who ran afoul of a pants-pooping-flash-in-the-pan-hippie-with-a-law-degree.

Strap on a pair of headphones and listen to Embryonic. "Boring" will not be the first adjective that comes to mind.

There's been buzz about their doing SB shows for a while now, and since the London show was announced the already-humming speculation about their rolling it out at the NYE freak-out is reaching fever pitch.

Yeah, you're right Cosmk, Embryonic was a pleasant surprise. Guess I misspoke there.

No. But why would I? I don't like their music, their name or J.

I've seen the Flaming Lips 4x in the past 6yrs and they've played 'She Don't Use Jelly' at every show. Surprisingly, they've also played 'Bad Days' two out of the four shows. (sweet.)

I agree that the newer shows seem boring/redundant...yeah, the confetti is cool and the ball is pretty awesome...but they've got such a huge catalog, I'd rather they focus on playing a more diverse setlist rather than cater to the newbie fans and add all kinds of special effects.

That being said, I would be totally down to cough up serious $$$ to see "Soft Bulletin" in its entirety. Just like I would to see =w='s "Pinkerton" and, if God willing, Violent Femmes' "Add It Up" (Yeah, it's a 'best of' album but it's perfect. Too bad they supposedly broke up. Bastards.)

Meh, gimme "Oh My Gawd!!!" in it's entirety, THEN I'll poop my pants. I've seen it twice before back in a time called the mid-to-late 80's. You see kids, they were a 3-piece noise-rock band with a phenomenal drummer named Richard English. They just glossed-over his tenure in "Fearless Freaks".

I saw Built to Spill perform their "Perfect From Now On" album live (with the first 3 tracks of "Keep it Like a Secret" as an encore).

/and yes, Dinosaur, Jr opened for them
//sorry but they were kind of meh
///and Meat Puppets opened for Dino
////ironical that Dino paved way for BtS? Who cares

Was that is Pontiac Michigan? If so, I was there too. you might even be my fight-club style alter-ego that I have been chasing for all these years.

Nope. Dallas. Funny story about the gig. I got in free because one of my friends at the time was threatening to kill the new boyfriend of his ex (I and my friends did a lot of drugs back then and some of us weren't very stable) and she and the theater owners called me down there and gave me a couple of free tickets so I could watch for him and point him out to security. He never showed and I got to see two excellent bands gratis.

that is a great story, it would have been less great if the guy had showed up though. The Michigan show was on the roof of a parking garage and almost a year later than the Lips opening for Porno for Pyros at the same venue. The Lips are a great outdoor band.
