I'm guessing that they don't regrow lost body parts. Xavier St. Cloud didn't regrow his arm when Duncan cut it off.

Nope, Immortals do not regrow lost body parts. Duncan MacLeod lopped off the hand of Xavier St. Cloud and it didn't grow back.

Good point, I guess. And Victor Kruger's voice was never the same after Ramirez farked up his neck. Still, after all the battles over the course of thousands of years, it seems like Methos and other immortals would be little more than scar tissue with mouths. It would be easy to see who the immortals are, because they'd all be really ugly mother farkers.

Oh and I had no idea they were rebooting the series. If there ever was a series that needed a fresh start, Highlander is it.

I mean, you have a story based around badass immortals with awesome swords who cut off each others heads, and when that does happen, lighting shoots out and the winner basically levels up.

If you can't amuse your target demographic working with that material, you fail as a writer and probably as a human being in general.

After 20 years of kenjutsu, 20 of fencing, and almost 30 of karate, aikido and judo, I can't help but wonder:

1. Polearms/staffs/spears generally beat swords with ease. They have to be, since points are vastly quicker than edges. So why does everyone insist on a sword? After all, once you wound him/her enough and he/she is immobilized on the ground, you can cut their head off with a pocketknife if you so choose.

2. To extend this question, why not arrows and guns? I carry a street sweeper and a bowie knife, you carry a broadsword. Unless you have special powers or sneak up behind me, I am *going* to win.

3. Why not more emphasis on stealth and ninja skills? A ninja with a shotgun and a knife or a sniper with a knife would work a lot better I would think.

4. If an immortal is beheaded by a non-immortal (even if rare, it had to have happened once or twice, even if just by artillery rounds), is the quickening wasted? Or maybe they just don't die?

5. How did immortals kill each other back in the day? Swords with functional (read: beheading) edges are a relatively recent development, historically. The metallurgy just wasn't there. Which is why the Romans used short swords. Any longer, and they had a distressing tendency to bend around the other guy's sword/shield/whatever.

6. Civilization has been around about 7000 years, but homo sapiens is at least 10 - 30 times older than that. Were there no caveman immortals? Or was there just one back in the day, and they spread? If there can be only one, and they can't have kids, how did there ever get to be more than one?

7. If the immortals are so old and experienced and awesome with swords and all, why do they all use known (human-created) Asian forms? Why haven't they become the masters of their own forms. I mean, Miyamoto Musashi was awesome and all, but surely a 1500 year old immortal would make him look like chump change?

8. WHY DON'T THEY WEAR ARMOR? ESPECIALLY SINCE MODERN ARMORS ARE SO EFFECTIVE AND SO LIGHT. Sure, armor got abandoned for being too slow, but that was against the point and projectile weapons, not the edge. The point and the projectile developed because armor defeated the edge entirely. It won the battle. Duncan MacLeod may be a badass with that sword, but there's no way in hell he beats a newborn immortal in full 15th century armor with a polearm, a mace, a sword and a shotgun. It just doesn't happen.

9. Why are the overwhelming majority of immortals white and male? And for that matter, why are they almost all Christian or pagan? Were there no Jews, no Muslims, no Buddhists?

10. Why do the movies suck so bad? And what on Earth possessed them to put a FRENCH CANADIAN in the lead role??

But there WAS a Zardoz 2 movie, starring Sean Connery and co-starring Christopher Lambert.

In one episode, an immortal saves Duncan from being beheaded by mortals, then later tried to behead Duncan in his sleep. Before Duncan wipes the sleep out of his eyes and takes the dude's head, he asks the other immortal why he saved him in the first place. The other immortal didn't want to "waste a quickening".

In another episode, Richie recieves a quickening when an immortal near him commits suicide by lying down with his neck across the railroad tracks.

I guess that first guy should have just asked those guys if they needed a hand dispatching Duncan and taken the freebee.

This was explored in the series. Duncan dealt with a guy that used a squad of mercineries to take out other immortals. Duncan caught them off guard and took them out, forcing the immortal into an old school duel.

Again, this was done. There was even a guy that focused on poison and poison gasses to take out his rivals.

It's wasted. The watchers started killing immortals at one point. They even killed Darius, one of the oldest immortals. Nothing happened.

Don't forget about Darius. He was killed by a human and there was no quickening. This actually pissed me off when it happened, until I read recently that the actor playing Darius was written out of the show because he had cancer, and he actually died before they could film the scene (so they used old footage).

Also, I just assumed that the quickening occurs whenever there is another immortal around, regardless of how the beheading happens. In your example above, I'd say that the guy might have been close enough to trigger the quickening should Duncan have been killed, but he would have been easily spotted by the people that killed Duncan and he would have been killed, too (they are pretty vulnerable when they absorb the quickening, after all).

I think you're right about proximaty. I recall an episode with a mentally challenged (Can't say retarded anymore) highlander. At the end of the episode everyone decided he was too much trouble and he laid down with his neck on railroad tracks. Duncan was nearby and he got the guy's juice.

i've had a love/hate relationship with highlander since i was 10 and methos was hands down the best thing to come out of it all. i agree whole heartedly with peter that the TV spinoff should have opened up the world of immortals centering around joe and methos. that episode of season 6 was a bittersweet glimps of what could have been instead of the abortion that was The Raven.

i loved his answer about his thoughts on the 2 movies he was in. the whole time watching those i thought there was no way anyone involved was happy with the project...and it showed. glad to see pete has the balls to come out and say it...though i wish he would've had them during filming to try to steer the movies back in the right direction.

the problem with highlander is 50% solved now that half of davis/panzer is dead. those guys were shameless in raping the property to squeeze out every last penny they could. ever get a call from the highlander catalog people?? i have really high hopes the reboot will wash away the utter disappointment of the last 15 years or so and i think the lynchpin of a successful plan to do so include peter/methos

The series had a couple conflicting solutions to this.

In one episode, an immortal saves Duncan from being beheaded by mortals, then later tried to behead Duncan in his sleep. Before Duncan wipes the sleep out of his eyes and takes the dude's head, he asks the other immortal why he saved him in the first place. The other immortal didn't want to "waste a quickening".

In another episode, Richie recieves a quickening when an immortal near him commits suicide by lying down with his neck across the railroad tracks.

I guess that first guy should have just asked those guys if they needed a hand dispatching Duncan and taken the freebee.

/Plot holes in Highlander? Who knew?

Don't forget about Darius. He was killed by a human and there was no quickening. This actually pissed me off when it happened, until I read recently that the actor playing Darius was written out of the show because he had cancer, and he actually died before they could film the scene (so they used old footage).

Also, I just assumed that the quickening occurs whenever there is another immortal around, regardless of how the beheading happens. In your example above, I'd say that the guy might have been close enough to trigger the quickening should Duncan have been killed, but he would have been easily spotted by the people that killed Duncan and he would have been killed, too (they are pretty vulnerable when they absorb the quickening, after all).

I think you're right about proximaty. I recall an episode with a mentally challenged (Can't say retarded anymore) highlander. At the end of the episode everyone decided he was too much trouble and he laid down with his neck on railroad tracks. Duncan was nearby and he got the guy's juice.

That would explain why Duncan was such a tard.

Apparently, the Japanese sword's got something to do with a past love, who he painfully outlived, which is why he tried to make Connor break up with Heather (if I remember her name correctly).

You know, I see a great deal of Highlander 2 hate (deservingly so), but I wonder what Farkers think of the other even bigger steaming pile Highlander: The Source. At least we got more Ramirez and Michael Ironside with 2. Other than having Methos as one of the main characters, what did The Source have to offer?
