Hell, I'm only a dad and I tell the same stories over and over again. Reason: after you have kids you really don't make any more interesting stories.

Kelly and Susy were playing with each other on the bed sounds a lot more interesting than Kelly and Susy were playing together at the park.

All I've got is from before kids.

My grandfather had a massive heart attack shortly after his retirement in his mid-60s. He managed to live with severely limited heart function and congestive heart failure for two decades before his death, but every year the diminished blood flow robbed him of his cognitive function.

At the end, his only way of coping with the world around him was to listen to conversations until he heard a key word, at which time it would trigger a specific story tangentially related to the keyword. A typical visit would include the entire family gathered around the dinner table, with grandpa in "his chair" on the other side of the house, as grandpa didn't move from that chair except to pee and go to bed. We'd be talking about the current political situation, someone would mention Obama, and we'd suddenly get interrupted by grandpa telling the story about the time back in the 80s when he worked with a "very nice looking young colored man." Or someone might mention purchasing a car, and it would spark a tirade on "cheap plastic crap"

Everyone would politely listen, as though we hadn't heard it a million times, and then resume our conversation. It was his only way of participating due to not being able to *think* independently anymore.

And yet, at his funeral, the family was sitting around talking, and it turned out that many people in our family had no idea whatsoever that his ridiculous stories were due to loss of brain function. They seemed to actually think that he was participating, meaningfully, in these conversations.

Blew my mind, personally, but it had happened so gradually that no one caught on to the fact that grandpa was a vegetable. It's an astonishingly good coping mechanism as it turns out.

Mine tells the same boring stories of his post-war life because he's still farking shellshocked by all the shiat he witnessed during the war.

For all that old man did, I can listen to the same story about his next door neighbors setting the bushes on fire as long as he wants to tell it.

I'm 20-something and my 55-year-old father tells me the same stories over and over again.

Oddly enough, my maternal grandfather is 90 years old, built like a goddamn house, has outlived all his children, and remembers EVERYTHING (except where he put the goddamn tool or part he needs - but that's something all men who use their garages for manly things do) in astonishing detail.

My mom tells the same old stories over and over constantly, but I don't think it's because she is 75. She's perfectly capable and independent (dad passed away 4 years ago... her current boyfriend is in his late 50's). Anyway, she has told me old stories about her childhood and people I've never met my whole life. Over and over.

I don't think it's a memory thing for her. I think it's "re living" old and cherished memories. She simply doesn't care if the listener is bored.

She tells new stories too, of course, but I think she feels her best years (and stories) are behind her...

Back in my day we didn't have Fark and we liked it!

My great aunt tells the same crap over and over, and the stories get longer and longer. I feel bad b/c a lot of the family call her "Aunt Talk" but I get the feeling she just keeps saying the same crap over and over more so she won't forget...

I met my Great-Grandma Fisher for the first time when I was 8. She was a couple years short of 90 then. She thought my dad was the son of me and my grandma.
