L. Hill = R&B
E. Badu = R&B
P.E = Rap

Just wanted to clear that up.

Rap sucks, guys

No it doesn't.

Fear of a Black Planet is one of the best albums of the 90s.

Hip Hop, Rap, and R&B are, like every other genre of music, full of fantastic artist and stellar albums. As well as much crap.

/did I feed the obvious troll?
//yep I did. But somebody had to, otherwise how would we get another crappy headline about this list tomorrow.

I was just happy to see Refused on the first link. Haven't looked since then but I better see "Range Life," "Gold Soundz," "Stereo," and "Summer Babe" by Pavement on there.

It does give one a reason to listen to bands you might not have in the past. I have missed out on a lot of good music in my life, evidently, and I thought I had a clue about good music.

2010-09-01 12:58:30 PM
Also gotta give props for including The Lemonheads. I bought "It's a Shame About Ray" on my 13th birthday and still own it and listen to it. That and "You'd Prefer an Astronaut" by Hum are my two favorite albums of the '90s.

2010-09-01 01:03:35 PM
Songs I've heard of off the top of my head
200-151: 13/50
150-101: 13/50
100-51: 10/50

This list has been good so far. I wish some (or all) of these songs could make it into the playlist of the "mix" station I have to listen to at work all day.

Yeah I like to use lists like this to find things that I missed. I also don't give any credence to order until it hits #20 or so. There is no way I will ever believe that "Pony" by Ginuwine is better than the worst tracks done by Matthew Sweet, Refused or 9,000 other bands from the '90s.

so far the list is pretty good and diverse, though rather odd in how it's ranked. I'm rather surprised to see Spacehog listed so high. They weren't bad, or at least the song wasn't, but they were rather obvious cash-ins on the Alternative movement.

#77 Archers of Loaf "Web in Front." Still one of the best bands I have ever seen live and an absolute staple in my CD player in high school. When I DJ'ed at the local college radio station I played them non-stop.

just saying. Especially since it's otherwise ranked fairly high.

"Resident Alien" was a good, quirky album, and "In The Meantime" was a terrific single. A grungy song that actually required the bass player to study his part? And the lead singer was the bass player, no less. I love playing this one on CD or live.

Also: thanks for pointing this out, as I otherwise would have missed the 150-100 list. Great tracks on that one!

I'm thinking of three bands that goddamn well better appear in the top 50, or this list is a complete failure.

And everyone who contributed to this list should have their cock and/or tits cut off if Tumbthumping by Chumbawumba appears on it.

Still not a single Pavement song (at least that I saw). And I guarantee you when they do one, it is going to be "Cut Your Hair."

Eh, I've got no complaints as those are all pretty good songs. I'll allow "Poison" because it's such a catchy relic. It's weird to see Stereolab get in there for "French Disko", but I haven't seen any of their big tracks from Emperor Tomato on the list. I also would have picked Stone Roses "Fool's Gold" or "Waterfall" over "I Want to be Adored".

And damn right you include Repeater and ODB's "Got Your Money."

This is Pitchfork. It'll be something off of Slanted and Enchanted. I bet they'll even pick "Gold Sounds" before "Cut Your Hair."

I actually would be fine with that. As much as I like "Cut Your Hair," "Gold Soundz" is a better song. My opinion probably shouldn't count on this though, I probably listen to Pavement more than any other band.

I can almost forgive every other song on the list for including the KLF, especially a track off Chill Out.

Rapmaster2000: I also would have picked Stone Roses "Fool's Gold" or "Waterfall" over "I Want to be Adored".

Having come out in the spring of 1989, it shouldn't be on there at all. It's a great song and all, but just because the record company wanted to milk their cash cows a bit for a bit more in 1991 by releasing it as a single doesn't make it a 90s release anymore than putting a single of "Sugar Spun Sister" next week would make it a song of 2010.

I was wondering when they'd get to Lauryn Hill/The Fugees. "Doo Wop" is a solid choice.

Oh, and English Major? EABOD. If you can't appreciate the genius performer that is/was Lauryn Hill. . . I can't finish that sentence. Ain't no way to deny Mz. Hill:

I can do what you do, easy, believe me
Frontin' nubianhs give me heebie-jeebies
So while you're imatating Al Capone
I'll be Nina Simone
And defecating on your microphone.

Dafatone: Stop letting three words at the end of the headline threadjack.

For real. I don't know why people get so bent about it. Draws your attention to something, you click, you discuss. No problem.

So, Lauren Hill. That record is fantastic. Not a big fan of the genre, but it dug into me big time. It came up here the other day, too, and I had to put it on.

Rapmaster2000: I also would have picked Stone Roses "Fool's Gold" or "Waterfall" over "I Want to be Adored".

I like both of those songs more than Adored, but I can kind of understand why they went with Adored over the others. It opens the landmark album and every Roses show, and has that epic, building kind of "here we are, the next big thing" quality about it that helped define the Roses and led directly into Britpop.

It's not a 1990s album, but yes, it's classic in every way possible. I still spin it and Fear of a Black Planet on a regular basis. The latter suffers from just a touch of filler, but they're damn near a perfect pair.

I just hate how people lump all rap together, or even Hip Hop. Today and all the past is no where near the same. Not even the same ballpark.

LeroyBourne: I just hate how people lump all rap together, or even Hip Hop.

People do it with all genres. Country gets his with the same thing, jazz, pop music, whatever. I wouldn't worry about it. No one who is willing to lump an entire genre together is going to be musically open-minded enough to care about distinctions, anyway.

The English Major: I'm assuming we'll have Nirvana in the top ten. But will the Beastie Boys make it?

I hope not.

I liked the Beastie Boys, I really did, but they lost me in the late 1990s and have never been able to get me back. I don't know what changed. Not even nostalgia can get me to spin those records. For reasons I can't fully explain, their status as elder statesmen kind of irks me. It's irrational, but there it is.

I was just trying to guess what decisions Pitchfork had in store for us. A lot of the artists I expected to see higher--Dinosaur Jr., Pavement, Pearl Jam--have already been represented. I'm guessing they'll appear again, probably in the top 50, but who knows? I'm waiting for them to put Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, Britney Spears, and, as Rev. K said, Chumbawumba into the mix. Hell, I was shocked Being Boring made it.

Well, I couldn't be more off with my prognostications [at least with respect towards chart placement]. Damn near every song and/or artist that I thought would be in the top 50 has either been used already on the chart proper or as one of the will-be-400-when-all-is-said-and-done "honorable mentions".
If they keep with the use-one-track-per-artist trend going on in the list proper, the only thing I can guess now is that something off of O.K. Computer and Smells Like Teen Spirit will be in the top 10.

Knowing Pitchfork, I'd wager there is one token hit song in the top 10, maybe 2, and the rest will be attempts at showing how edgy and ahead of the curve they are.

Yes, even on a list about songs 10-20 years old.

If we all chip in and buy The English Major a ton of food will he finally eat away all his sadness to the point of death and leave us in peace? I'd kick in at least $20 if it contributed to his death.
