So is this the next iteration of The Blair Witch Project?

Pocket Ninja: So is this the next iteration of The Blair Witch Project?

Shiat, I remember people biatching about Stone's JFK because they were confused by the mixing of real and fabricated footage.

(Hint: Gary Oldman was 5 in 1963.)

One would hope... but Wikipedia has a really brief synopsis, enough to spoil the whole thing.

Just to get a few words in before the argument gets too far: It's not fake. Saw it last night, talked to the guys who made the film, etc, etc-- it's for reals. The biggest problem this movie is going to have is people telling other people it's "not real", and considering how incredible the movie was, that'll be a shame. If just one person's turned off from seeing the film because they think it's another "The Last Exorcism", that's a film-related injustice the likes of which hasn't been seen since "Pulp Fiction" lost to "Gump".

See this movie. Don't be a-scared, it isn't fake. Don't see it with your Facebook girlfriend. And, for the love of all that is Holy, avoid spoilers. I think that a full-blown, spoiler-heavy review would alleviate a lot of the fears about the film being a mockumentary, but then that would spoil the fun. So, just avoid reading anything about it and go see it when it opens. You won't be disappointed.

The is it real or not argument doesn't matter, the movie isn't good enough to care. I already saw it and wrestled with the real or not idea for a couple of minutes then I realized I was spending time on a mostly boring movie that wasn't shocking enough to give a crap about one way or the other. The subject matter in the movie is not surprising and if you are shocked by it, you should not be on the internet because you are a danger to yourself and everyone around you.

IAmNotRickMoranis: It's not fake.

The trailer looks awesome, but it looked to me like they're all acting. Looks like a great film, but I didn't buy that it was real at all.

Adam Carolla had a great idea that e-dating services should keep it real & must post a pic of the woman, standing on a scale, holding today's newspaper like hostage.

Just go with the 4chan approach: get your date to send you a picture of a sharpie in her pooper her with a personalized message written on her hand, and the date.

so fake, and the filmmakers are douchebags. after a screening i saw of it with the filmmakers there someone asked a question about whether it was 100% real or not and the filmmakers flipped out! Instead of saying, "why do you think this movie is fake, or what would lead you to believe that" ya know, questions a normal director would ask, these guys went "Oh, so you think its fake? you must think my brother is the best actor in the world, maybe he'll win an oscar for his great acting, lets all give a round of applause for my brother the amazing actor!!!" and they weren't just saying it, they were yelling it obnoxiously. That makes it seem more than fake to me. are you telling me that these kids, in this day and age couldn't look up this info on the internet and find out who this person was?? come on, i'm not stupid and neither was anyone else at the screening

If you think "hardcore porn" is a picture of a topless woman, or that "gore" is a picture of mildly invasive surgery... then you'll really love this movie.

If you're not brain damaged or settling into your second month on the internet... GIANT SNOOZEFEST.

Read the spoilers. Sounds interesting. But they are raping the marketing. They are making it out to be this sinister story, and while it is possibly horrifying in some ways, its more or less just sad. Still would like to see it, but these guys are doing everything they can to sell this movie, and thats kind of sad, because what they appear to have uncovered is quite interesting in its own context.

you see and its not your fault for feeling this way. Its not a "snoozefest", its just not a horror movie, and they are actively portraying it as just that. which was my point, its a very interesting story, but people will inevitably be mad when they find out its nothing crazy like it puports itself to be. Its like telling everyone your seeing an action movie and then its really a romantic comedy. Its not to say there nothing good in the film, but people are coming looking for something else and as a result their opinions will be highly negative.

This is the impression I'm getting. Spoiler? It's supposed to be a sinister story about on-line dating. In a site where alts and trolls roam free, how can the ending possibly NOT be predicted?? And they're being all secretive about it? Or saying "it's real" like it matters?

No, I haven't seen the movie, but Pocket Ninja is right. The marketing scheme smacks of The Blair Witch Project, another shameless bore. When a movie's creators are obsessive about HOW the movie was made, as opposed to the actual content you'll be paying to see, it's basically an admission the content itself has nothing to offer.

2010-09-01 01:27:45 PM
Read the synopsis... Meh. Won't be seeing it.

***SPOILER***

IMDB ripped this "movie" apart last month. It said it was a documentary but some of it felt too staged. In the end, the guy finds out that the 2 girls he was talking to was one mentally ill woman living on some farm with 2 disabled children.

In the information age, it was being reported that the "friends" didnt even start filming this until they had already investigated everything and came to the conclusion that someone was lying.

Docu-drama?

My best friend had been Facebook flirting with this chick from Texas for over a year, when the two lovebirds decided to meet in real life. They took one look at each other, made mutual gagging sounds, and then passed one another like garbage barges in the night.

Reading the spoilers and then the subject's blog (found through the "sell her work" link in Irate's link), I have to agree with the above. The whole thing is sad and the filmmakers are coming across as very douchey. The "villain" in this documentary seems more the victim.

*Spoiler*

I just read the spoilers and I really don't get how this is going to shock people. For years the running joke has been that 'the hot chick you met on the internet might not be all they seem'. Great that they made a film about it but it's hardly going to shock anyone familiar with the net.

And why the hell is it called catfish?
